I like the Turtle Itches for their sound quality. And I haven't seen any wireless ones, but they do have a darn long wire on them. BF went from his room down a short hallway into the living room couch with them on.
Might end up getting them, I just prefer wireless stuff for reasons. Wired is less expensive of course. It's not like I walk around with them on very often anyway.

So I've been having horrible back pain since April and nothing is helping it. I normally seek out chiropractic care for the occasional backache but with this I only get immediate relief from it and my back is screaming the next day. Ive actually missed class because I physically can not sit up out of bed some mornings. So I made an appointment with the orthopedic back doctor today, my radiographs are normal thank God but there is still no explanation of my symptoms. They were originally thinking bursitis but the fact that the pain radiates and periodically goes down my left leg, kind of rules that out. So they ordered an MRI which can take 5-7 days for my insurance to process. Uggg! It hurts now and I want it to stop hurting now. Of course they had to palpate my back which of course irritated it and now it is super painful. Hurry up insurance!

Bad things all around this week. Got rejected from yet another summer internship that I desperately wanted (2 week paid lab animal at my university), had my July fun trip cancelled, discovered my long distance SO has been cheating on me, and now I have a close relative in the hospital and have to go out of state because they might not make it. I really, honestly, just cannot handle this right now.

So sorry 🙁 that just sucks all around. I'd say come drink some moscato with me when you get back, but I won't be here. But you can come cuddle my adorable kitten! She may be more interested in play time than snuggles, though...

I have five loads of laundry to do between now and tomorrow morning, since will be out of town for 10 days. Only 1 of 6 washing machines in my building is working! Good thing I decided to check in on the washing machines tonight, because I had been planning on doing them all tomorrow morning! Hopefully this last machine doesn't crap out on me... not that it would surprise me if it did.

That is just awful kcoughli 🙁 I'm the kind of person that eats my feelings, and all of that calls for a great big calzone. I hope some other opportunity opens up for you for the summer and things get better for your relative. As for your SO, I'm in a LDR myself (when I'm at school) and I just can't even imagine.

I'm in a bit of a funk myself today. The clinic where I work takes wildlife drop offs as a sort of middle man for the rehab places in the area. Today someone brought in a duck that had been beaten almost to death by a group of kids. It ended up dying soon after it was dropped off. It was awful, and I just can't figure out what kind of person could do that to any living thing. My faith in humanity is pretty low today.

E-hugs for you, that's really rough 🙁 If you need to vent about the LDR, I'm here.

I'm looking at police dog memorials as part of my summer research, and the number of these working dogs who die from preventable things is overwhelmingly sad. Went back through 50 dogs, almost 30% of them died from heat exhaustion. Third most common cause of death, behind getting shot or hit by car. Some of them were while tracking or on duty, but most just got left in cars by the handlers... 🙁

And then there's this one: https://www.odmp.org/k9/1505-k9-rocky Can't even imagine the dog's emotions while going from "good dog I get a BALL!!" to panicking, unable to breathe and then dead. Ugh.

That's really, really sad 🙁 Getting shot or HBC seems...expectable, unfortunately, but heat exhaustion? C'mon guys, everyone should know not to leave an animal or kid in the car even on a warm day by now👎

Agreed. Freaking ridiculous.. They should know better.
Lock the dogs in the car with it running when they need to leave them alone (as I am sure they do frequently)... hell we treat a lot of police dogs at Penn Vet, and they are ALWAYS leaving them in running police cars. Not sure why this isn't standard..

A lot of them were left accidentally at the end of the shift - a couple were left in cars that the AC malfunctioned in or something, but definitely not the majority. My research is working with a device that monitors HR/RR/temp in working dogs and could have an integrated alert system, which could definitely have saved some lives. Humans aren't perfect, and when you're running out in response to a call or just worked 18hrs, mistakes are going to be made... but still it sucks a lot, and there should be systems in place to prevent mistaken deaths. These dogs are not cheap, either.

They're still super depressing. One of them - labeled on my list as "shot by an dingus" - was left in a running vehicle while the officer ran to a public restroom. While he was gone, someone abducted the dog from the car, shot him and left him in a roadside ditch. Another was shot in his kennel at the handlers's home (while they were at church) possibly because of the officer's anti-narcoleptic efforts in the city. Sucks ass. Really depressing reading.

Sounds like you should send your findings to Penn's Working Dog center (we have a dedicated building/department to work with, train, research working dogs).... If they don't know about these problems already, they should.

Dr. Cindy Otto is the head of the center.

My co-workers were driving me extra crazy today. All they do is bitch about things that they are asked to do (this is generally an everyday occurrence) ... seriously, if you just stop your bitching, you will get the task done with no problem at all! They really need put they big girl panties on and grow the F*&% up.

I'm surprised they get left in cars very often. I always assumed police dogs were treated kind of like guide dogs and other working dogs by the law, and were allowed to go pretty much wherever their officer goes.

That's really sad though. I can't imagine being bonded with a working dog like that, and then coming back to find them dead.🙁

I think this is standard at any place but I feel your pain. One clinic I used to work at has a person out with a broken pinky toe!

(Edit: It's not me btw, I work through the pain unless I absolutely cannot walk!)

I could go on forever about the things people I worked with or even some family members would miss work for.

My aunt once missed a full week of work because of a UTI... seriously, a full week. I had a UTI/kidney infection combo and was instructed that I should head to the hospital, instead I drove myself 2 hours back to undergrad because school was starting and I couldn't miss the first day of lab because they will drop you from the course. I never did go to the hospital, because I am a stubborn, stubborn person.

So many coworkers will miss multiple days worth of work for minor things... one coworker missed two days of work after a dog "bit" her. The dog was intubated and clamped down when being extubated, it grazed her thumb and caused a little bleeding, she missed two days of work for it because her thumb "hurt too bad". I wanted to smack her upside the head.

Then there were the usual mild illnesses... coughs, colds, congestion, etc. I can understand missing a day or two for some of those, but certain people would be out for a week or more just for a cold. Then again, I was the stubborn fool that had appendicitis for 3 months and still worked despite the pain. I don't expect anyone to be stubborn like I am, nor do I suggest it, but some of the things I saw people missing for and the length of time they were out was absurd.

Eh, I kind of felt like you did when I was younger... but have changed over the years, as I have met more and more different types.

Everyone has different levels of tolerance for pain, and reactions to illness (and a lot of it is genetic, some environment though).
I don't judge people for those things anymore. Just because you react a certain way to pain, doesn't mean others are as well. Maybe if you felt the pain they were, you would be home too.. or maybe not...

On the flip side, I am more annoyed now with people like you now, 😱, who come to work sick infecting others, or come when they are clearly not performing well... "Go the feck home and feel better quicker so you can actually do your job efficiently/effectively sooner" is my feeling now. Especially in jobs that can have really bad outcomes if someone isn't on top of their game. We owe our clients or patients or whatever a full effort, not a sub-par effort cause we are too stubborn to take care of ourselves. To me, there is too much of a macho culture, that enduring silly amounts of discomfort is a plus and not stupid. It is all a matter of degree.

Do you want your surgeon operating when they are at 60%? How about your pilot on a bad weather day? etc etc.
(and this is why hours that doctors/vets/pilots work is such an issue for me. Fatigue KILLS, and illness and pain distraction KILLS).

<end my rant>

I definitely agree with the annoyance when people come to work and spread their germs everywhere. I've worked with people who do that, and I will say that I'm guilty of it every now and then(I also get a lot of allergy related stuff so sometimes I'm still trying to figure out if it's allergies or a cold). However, it's often because of the fact that I feel like I'll be reprimanded or something for not wanting to come into work because I'm not feeling well. I don't know if anyone else ever feels that way, but I've definitely felt that pressure every now and then. Or maybe I just feel overly guilty about things.

I agree to an extent, which is why I said that staying home for a day or two at the start of a cold isn't a bad thing and I don't care. But to spend upwards of a week or sometimes two weeks out due to a cold, becomes silly. You aren't contagious anymore and I can't cover your arse everyday.

Also, the time I was sick for 3 months... I saw my GP 4 times, a gastroenterologist once and had scheduled a second procedure with him, and I had also been to the ER twice. I was still performing well at work and was told so numerous times because I would ask if my work was being impacted. I was plenty aware that I was in some serious pain and that it might be having an effect. However, the pain was odd and it was not a constant this hurts all the time, it only bothered me when I ate. So I stopped eating... which eventually caught up and had other effects. I was well aware there were issues, but I couldn't take off from work for 3 months while the doctors ordered tests and I waited for those dates to come up. At some point, you have to be an adult and deal with it. My choices were: 1. Sit at home and wait. 2. Go to work and wait and still be able to make money. I chose work.

Meh. I would have gone if I got worse, but I was feeling fine, didn't even have a fever. The dr. also didn't push the issue, he said he was recommending it as a precaution, but if I didn't want to then he would just give antibiotics with instructions on what to watch for and if those developed to head to the ER.

If the dr had really thought it was 100% necessary, I would have gone. I might be stubborn, but I will listen if the dr. makes a strong recommendation and really sticks with it.

Not attacking you....
Like I said, everyone reacts differently to pain...

But clearly your mindset is more to the "grin and bear it" side vs the coddling side.

FWIW, as I have gotten older, the flu has hit more worse and worse... and I have stayed home 2 weeks from my job with it.. my boss was irate.. but I was in bad shape, and wouldn't do anyone any favors coming in (not to mention I tend to get bronchitis pretty easily.. and usually do).. I must have heard him complain about 50 times the rest of the year about how much time I took off sick (but he needed me, and I was pretty profitable, so I wasn;t to worried)...

This is something else. I rarely missed work due to illness. Then I one time called in sick because I was coughing and all kinds of miserable. I would not have been any good at work that day due to the cough. The next day I get to work and my boss is riding my ass about missing the day prior and trying to get me to "make up the missed hours". I had to tell her numerous times that I have plenty of sick leave as I had not missed a day of work in 5 years and I would use my sick leave. She kept insisting that I "make up the hours" and I kept telling her to use my sick leave. It was a pain to deal with, she ended up walking away from me pissed off that I wouldn't come in on a scheduled day off to "make up the hours". Also, she never did this to anyone else in the practice. I believe she thought that because I can be a bit of a workaholic and I don't like to make people mad that I would just fold and come in on my day off and she was pissed that I didn't fall for it.

No, it is not just you...that is the attitude of too many bosses unfortunately.

I get more annoyed with the really young generation that make a big deal over small things. Like the small dog bite that the girl missed two days for, it was no worse than a paper cut. I get bronchitis too and I know how awful it is, so I don't fault anyone for missing work for that. There is obviously a time where missing work is definitely needed and I don't fault anyone for that. But there are times where you can tell people are milking the time off.

I needed that lab class and certain lab classes were a pain to get at my undergrad. Had I missed that day, I could have potentially delayed graduation a semester. Maybe wasn't the best idea, but at the time and considering everything that was going on, I think I made the right decision.

You mean like my colleague who took off sick but was spotted surfing that morning.....yeah some people play the system no doubt....but that is unrelated to their health...just a good excuse.

Yeah, I was helping out at a sister hospital one summer. One of the guys that worked there called me on a Friday night and left a message asking me to go in for him the next morning because he wasn't feeling well. I didn't get his voice mail asking for me to cover for him until Saturday night. So, I did what any normal person would do and I called him to apologize for not getting his message in time and to see if he was feeling better since he stated he was sick. He answers the phone and it is instantly apparent that he is out at a party having a great time. I proceed to tell him sorry for getting his message too late and his response was, "Oh you didn't go in, I figured you would. Oh well, I didn't go either." Then he hung up. The following week he attempted to throw me under the bus by saying that he had called me to cover for him. Yeah, I was none too happy and luckily I was rather close to the office manager at that facility and she knew my work ethic really well so she didn't buy a bit of what he was saying. I guess this particular person has done this before and that was kind of the final straw, so he was fired. The other people that worked there all blamed me for him getting fired, I wasn't able to convince them otherwise, but they stopped being jerks about it when I told them that I don't really need to work at their clinic and I can go back to my usual clinic full time and I was only there to help them out.

You know that great feeling when you think you're out of the woods and all your work is done and you can just relax. But then s*^% just immediately goes wrong again. Especially if it's your own fault for being forgetful and making a stupid mistake. Just finished finals and thought everything was good for summer...cue stress and panic mode again because I'm an idiot.

Thank goodness this is a short flight, because the guy sitting next to me is a little too big for his seat and his elbow is invading my space. Hard to believe there was a time when I liked flying... I guess that was before I got mildly claustrophobic. This seat is ridiculously hard, too.

the XY's in my family are currently throwing a raging pity party over supposed injuries right now and i've just about had my limit...😵

i am going mad over all the whining happening here!! whine, whine, whine, whine, whine. yes we get it, you're "injured" now please give me back my SILENCE!:boom:

Duolingo. It's a free app if you haven't heard of it yet. I'm using it to learn some Spanish before I go the Galapagos at the end of July. Definitely won't be super efficient because I haven't really had time recently to work on it, but it'd be nice to be able to say a few sentences.

It seemed like plenty of people know a little bit of English and people that do any work with tourists and visitors should speak English for the most part. I had a good Spanish speaker with me on the mainland, but not on the islands and my Spanish speaking sucks (i.e., barely exists lol) and I got by without issues. Definitely a good plan, but saying it just in case you were worried about having trouble because of it.

We have a translator who will be helping us out but the clinic I'm working at is soley for locals and so it might be a little less. I know a lot of people who have participated in the past didnt speak Spanish so im not worried. I kind of just would like to learn a little for myself since I live in an area with a large Spanish speaking population.

After my half marathon in late April I got some pretty bad plantar fasciitis. I took about three weeks off from running and my foot wasn't hurting at all throughout the day so I thought it would be safe to attempt an easy 3 miler. Went on a run yesterday and I couldn't even get through a mile without intense shooting pain in my foot. I'm so discouraged 🙁 I'm going stir crazy not being able to run...it's my favorite form of stress release and other forms of cardio just don't cut it for me. Not to mention I'm stuck on a freaking island with shoddy medical help so I can't even go see a foot doctor until August. /whine

go for a swim! that whole instantly-sweaty thing on the island pretty much discouraged me from doing anything crazy like running, so glad we had lots of pretty water to swim in!

I can't swim to save my life...I just sink  I did spend all day Saturday in the ocean but I had a pool noodle 🙂 we did water running in high school for cross country so maybe I should give that a try again.

i'm definitely a much better swimmer now after my 3 years in grenada then when i started! i used to just hang out over shallow areas of 3-5 ft and snorkel. even that burns calories because water is a major heat thief!
