Why are textbooks so expensive?? :rage::rage:

Only looking at the required books and I’m at $400+. Oh and there’s like a $300 large animal anatomy book that I’m noping on.

I had a 2-week post-TPLO check today. Owner said all the right things about how crate rest was going, dog seemed to be using the limb OK, went over the plan for the next 2 weeks including no jumping, no stairs, etc, thought the recheck went fantastic. Went to talk to the receptionist afterwards and saw the owner have his dog jump into the back of his van to go home. :smack:

I CAN’T with people disregarding post-op care lately. We had a guy come in with his 125lb (!) Lab 6 days after her dental & mass removal, and she tore open the stitches. Dad said “Oh I left the cone off, it’s hard for her to eat with it” but then tried to maintain that his other dogs were licking her sutures, not her.

We had a dog that had to board for like 4 weeks post-op because the other dog was consistently licking the incision open 🙁

I get really mad when owners ignore post op care, but then there’s @nohika whose puppy decides to absolutely torment her post op and is having to go back in all the time!

Oh god. Like. I don't even have words for Chai post-op. Like, not words that are polite for SDN, anyway.

I'm to the point where like, if she and Mocha engage in a wrestling match for a minute or so, I just make sure they're not whacking her in the neck. If I tried to keep her from doing everything she wasn't supposed to do, I would literally do nothing else. And while that was like, fun the first week or two, we're past week three and I want to light myself on fire.

Like, the specialty clinic knows us by name and voice now. It's a problem.

"Required" ...

I'd wait and see what's actually required. I never bought many books, didn't feel much worse for it.

That’s the plan. I talked to a couple second years what they used, etc, and it knocked a lot of them out. Only problem is that LA anatomy is completely new teacher and he has 8 books on his list and I have no idea which ones he actually thinks are helpful..?

Our virology book is close to $200 and based on the first 4 lectures I'm going to need it. Feeling your pain!

Even the books they had listed for us as “required,” I didn’t find incredibly helpful. Case and point: I maybe opened the dissection guide like twice the entirety of last semester (but I used the big Miller’s book a lot and I’m glad I had a hard copy). But OMG I just discovered the Colored Atlas of Veterinary Anatomy books (thanks to my boss who had an older copy of the horse one) and I really really wish I had had the dog volume last semester. What a beautiful, helpful book.

I bought all of the books first year...one is still wrapped in plastic. Regret. I find that most books are either too in depth, or not in depth enough, for what our lectures were trying to convey. Also the fact that after 6.5 years, I know myself well enough and know I won't crack open the books anyways.

Out of all of my first year 'required' books, I really only used Miller regularly, but it served as our dissection guide. I had Dyce too but I hated that book with a passion.

Also, wait until you get connected with school/class pages on FB. Upperclassmen will sell you their books for cheap usually. I didn't wait and bought most of my books off Amazon (still used) and spent more than I had to.

hahaha yeah I’m connected with the pages. Only one person was selling and it was already sold by the time I saw it. 🙁

So my shift tonight started with a stick-in-mouth, then a sliver-in-eye (corneal foreign body), then a branch-in-chest (entering axillary, penetrating thorax).

Don't nobody tell me things don't come in waves.

OMG. One of my techs just looked at me and said "it's a stick shift."

Ha. Well. The third one (the branch) definitely was impaled. Total branch was about 5' long with 1' going in through the right axillary region caudally and then into the thorax and 4' hanging out of the body. Happened out in the woods. 90# dog. Owner said he carried the dog out of the woods. How the hell he did that with 4' of branch swinging around in a struggling 90# dog .... major chops, that dude.

Holy crap. I've definitely had the stick-in-the-mouth but that takes it to a whole 'nother level.

First I had a week and a half long cold, then a week of a sinus infection, then a week of a nasty stomach bug, NOW I have flank pain and starting to feel ill again? :rage:

I can't even with this immune system/body. If I could get a refund, I would.

Haven't had much of a voice since last week. Only time this has really happened to me has been with sinus infections, but I have yet to catch myself with a fever (if anything, I run low at like 95-97...). Debating about whether or now I go to a doctors as they'll probably just tell me it's a cold and I have to wait it out. And I feel horrible cause I've had to apologize to all my clients for sounding like a teenage boy going through puberty with the way my voice has been cracking every 2 seconds.

Ended up being a cool case. I was filling in at one of our non-24-hr hospitals last night, so had limited staff and equipment... I took the branch out, debrided the entry area, put a drain in, tapped the chest a few times for the pneumo (really probably needed a tube+pleurevac, but we didn't have one). Shipped it to our 24-hr hospital in the morning. They CT'd and found that the stick entered the chest, tagged a lung lobe, and caused a partial d-hernia. There were tufts of fur in a lung lobe. Fixed the hernia, partial lung lobectomy, cleaned out both compartments, closed. So far, at least, doing well.

Very nifty case. Also pretty amazing how much trauma a body can take. I mean - in the axillary region, into the chest through the ribs (no fx), tag a lung lobe and leave fur, puncture the diaphragm. Very cool. I'm just glad I didn't kill it trying to stabilize.

December 20, 2017: Your loans have been placed into forbearance, no payment is currently due. These other loans were not eligible for forbearance because no payment is currently due on them.

January 6, 2017: You are 14 days late on your payment of those other loans that were not eligible for forbearance. You are now delinquent.

I hate you student loans. If I had the power I would burn you off the face of the planet.

Searching for essentially two jobs (for my SO and I) in the same city/area that we would both be happy in, both find great jobs, AND be close to both of our families IS A MISERABLE NIGHTMARE and I really just want to cry all the time.

I'm pretty sure one of my profs at my grad school will pretty much never go anywhere else because the likelihood of both her and her husband ending up with tenure-level jobs that they like with strong departments would be pretty much impossible.

Too bad we like them too much to get rid of them 😛

My husband's industry only exists in a few places, and even if we were both willing to have him take a hit in his career to help mine, we absolutely need his salary. Trying to figure out how I could ever manage to specialize or even have a family while juggling all of these things literally keeps me up at night. Wasted most of Monday just thinking about it instead of studying.

ISN'T THIS FUN?

My mom prefers Delsym over DayQuil/NyQuil, if you haven’t tried that yet.
(Assuming you’re talking about the syrups vs the pills, if you’re talking pills, then maybe try syrups? Haha)
I have an allergic reaction every time I take the syrup (not sure what's in the syrup that's not in the pills) unfortunately, but those never really did much for me either. I just miss breathing out of my nose. Nothing is working, not even Sudafed!

Ugh that’s the worst
Afrin nasal spray?
I second a nasal spray. The one I use for my regular allergies is Rhinocort. They do recommend not overusing nasal sprays because supposedly they can make things worse
Some people like their Neti pots to clean out the nasty(I find the description of it a hard no for me so I don’t use them) but make sure to use boiled or distilled water and a Neti pot salt packet thing if you do. NO BRAIN EATING AMOEBAS PLS.

Yeah, I only use nasal sprays at night as there is nothing worse than not being able to lay the **** down and sleep. And when I am congested, laying down makes it worse but having to sleep sitting up is awful. So nasal spray to the rescue!

And the thought of the Neti pot is just disgusting to me.

Yes to all of this. Whenever I try to sleep with like 6 pillows making a wedge I always end up scooting down in the middle of the night so I’m laying flat again and then my feet are hanging off the bed hahaha
So it still doesn’t work

And the thought of a Neti pot just grossed me out but my parents and sister love them :yuck::barf:

I personally love Aleve-D when I'm sick. However, I will say when I got the flu on NYE, absolutely nothing that I normally go to for cold symptom relief would work and it was miserable. And 11 days later I still have a sore throat and I'm blowing my nose about 4 times an hour. So fun.

Have you tried searching the black market for a new immune system or throat/nose?
I’m still looking for a new back but I’m not giving up hope for finding one

Oh gosh, if I start going that route I'm going to come back with a lot more than a new throat and nose  I'm totally with you....a new back would be great.

I'm on day 9. The cough persists and the nose still drips. When will it end.
