To get work as a vet and citizenship definitely had to speak swedish last I looked but yes definitely on my bucket list to at least go! Super cool you got to study abroad there!
Also Swedish is almost comprehensible in text form... if you squint a bit. I spent a semester in Finland and basically lived off the Swedish translations on menus and signs as Finnish is impossible.

Why is it so hard to adopt a dog? 🙁 I’m just trying to adopt a small dog for my mom as our family dogs passed away in 2019 and 2020 and she really loved having them especially when I moved away from home. It just feels like you can never meet the standards of these rescues and small dogs at the shelter are gone so quick.

Sitting here drinking chicken broth and eating lime jello, wondering if the procedure I have is really worth it.
My sympathies. Heading in that direction next week myself. Hang in there 💗

This is part of why I am unlikely to adopt should I ever decide to get a dog. If I ever recover from the PTSD of seeing dogs in practice and decide to get a dog, I will 100% purchase from a reputable breeder a breed that fits my lifestyle.

Sounds like old school was causing coding issues, so likely going to have to adapt. It hurts as I was old school, but alas. CRY
Sadly though this is as bad as night mode as though as there is no contrast. I think that is what basic got right. At least I can tell what notifications I haven't read yet though where as night mode you can't

The retina-scorching option at least indicates which notifications are new.

what is happening with the SDN styles?! I can't live like this I want my old 2013 blue back!
I, too, was taken aback when I logged in this morning and immediately greeted by the eye-searing default white theme. Blech.
Is there a way to salvage the old style?

I will say this isn't the worst but why we have to change things that aren't broke?

My credit card info got stolen and I am already pre-emptively angry about all the sites I'm going to need to update my CC info on :annoyed: Even worse, I had sent Ducky's passport to Germany to get it updated, so now I'm going to have to figure out how to contact them to update my CC info, which I'm sure is going to be a pain in the butt :smack:

There’s a special place in hell for people who set off fireworks all ****ing night on any night that isn’t July 4th.

During the riots last year I was getting real, real tired of all the fireworks at random times.

Fortunately, my dog doesn't care in the least, but .... I DO.

Sincerely,

SDN's Grumpy Old Man

Does this mean I’m turning into a Grumpy Old Woman?

My workplace has a seriously toxic culture issue and people are getting essentially bullied into quitting, all for trying to do their jobs and make other people do their own jobs. The vets are all great and my boss and his boss is amazing but I am starting to seriously worry about the future of this place, especially if people keep leaving. I don't want to be perpetually short staffed, overworked, and exhausted...

Eh, that's all of vet med right now. Only hope things change if some kind of normalcy comes about. Kind of doubting it though. 🙁

Hate to say it, but "perpetually short staffed, overworked, and exhausted" is life in vet med right now, at least for SA clinicians. (Not saying it isn't for other branches of vet med; I'm just not as informed.)

I see literally zero positive change coming down the pipeline. I'm a little hard pressed to even imagine what the positive change would look like; and that's a bad sign when you can't even imagine it.

I had to turn away a 22-hour dystocia a few nights ago because we just plain didn't have any capacity left for it. No ICU space, our oxygen supply was max'd out (as in, I was max'ing out our entire hospital O2 keeping my respiratory patients alive, two of whom were on hi-flow units, which really cut your capacity) so I couldn't even really cut the case, and no staff left to deal with it in add'n to the other cases we already were allowing to overwhelm us. We spent all evening yelling at the O2 system to quit alarming because hey, wth could we do about it other than eek out every last bit of L/min from the system. I felt slightly like I was in a bad movie with the ship falling apart yelling at the engineer to just shut up and make things work.

And I turned it away knowing full well that every other of the 8 hospitals in the Twin Cities was also closed at the same time.

Think how you feel turning away a case like that knowing you might be condemning that animal. Because god knows where the hell that owner is going to drive to. I just hoped it made it through the night and could get cut SOMEWHERE the next morning. And remember, your staff feel "bad" about it, but it's YOUR decision and on YOUR conscience that you just maybe sent an animal away to die. An hour later I turned down a septic abd transfer. Too bad, so sad, can't cut it and don't have anywhere to put it.

Unless you're actively involved in it, you [generic you, not KCgophervet] really can't imagine how horrific things are right now in vet med. At least, in my little niche part of it.

Hugs to you. I don't know of a DVM not stressed out with the current situation in our profession. I don't see it changing anytime soon, either. I hope that you can work out some of the toxicity in your workplace, though.

It is everywhere. GP/ER/specialty... I've heard rads is slammed, pathology...I mean it all makes sense if we're getting increased cases that means more rads/path... and apparently people are still horrid about keeping their pets from eating stupid ****.

Though we've turned into "if a pet eats anything call them"... I'd say at least 30% of what we get called about isn't a tox issue (ex: dog eating a tiny piece of a lime peel) or is very clearly not related (ex: ancient dog with liver failure and maybe there was a fertilizer/herbicides/insecticide sprayed many days/weeks/months prior.).

When I said I wasn't sure about other areas of vet med, I was talking about the very different other areas. Anything with SA will be effected. But I don't really have any idea about lab animal folks - for all I know, their 9-5 is still their 9-5 (or maybe not). Or the folks doing USDA monitoring. Etc. Those kinds of branches of the tree.

Didn't some research/lab animal stuff get halted during the pandemic because people couldn't go into the labs? I wonder if they had to start all over....

I obviously can’t speak for everywhere, but we had to halt all new experiments and only a couple of designated people were allowed to go in for basic husbandry. So yeah, we had to start some things over.

I know dairy is less than ideal currently. My friend just got back from "interviewing." The position that was there from early covid is no longer available due to a dec number of dairy farms from selling out between the industry, covid, and making bank currently by selling their land. The larger herds seem to be doing ok right now. They're hoping for stabilization soon, but she's already looking at mixed positions with emphasis on the large animals in the mean time.

Lots of research was halted during the pandemic but apparently it's over now because our census is bigger than before the pandemic... but our staff is at sub 50% where it should be (husbandry staff) but we're also down ~25% of vet techs and short a vet. The labor shortage is a real problem.

I cut my hair *short* (translation: just below the shoulder) almost 2 years ago in July (I donated 9 inches) which was the first time that it was more than a trim. I personally like how I look with longer hair but it felt nice to try something new. I can’t wait till this summer when I’m hoping to donate 12 inches or so to get my hair short enough to be above the shoulder this time and see how that goes.

I can only speak from my department within USDA but there’s a lot of catch up from covid/pandemic shut down. So I think we’re pretty swamped

Finally got a referral to Mayo Clinic for my Crohn's and can't get an appointment there within the next 3 months. I feel like this is is going to be going on for over a year before I get anywhere near managed 🙁

So. Much. COVID.

We are one of the smallest hospitals in the KC metro so we originally weren’t admitting COVID patients but instead shipping them out to larger, better resourced and staffed hospitals in the area, but that has changed as of last week. Now we are not only receiving COVID patients from this county (which still has not broken even 35% fully vaccinated, by the way) but also from the southwest part of the state, as are all of the metro hospitals. Many patients—whether they are here for COVID or for non-COVID emergencies—are routinely waiting over a day to be admitted because of lack of space. It is also now taking much, much longer to not only do transfers, regardless of acuity or need, but also just to FIND someone to take them because all of our hospitals are in this same boat. There are no beds.

Meanwhile, my mother lambasts me with conspiracy theories about how the vaccines were developed as a form of population control and she is terrified I’m going to die within two years or something because I received the two doses of Moderna back in January-February. Oh, and the vaccines also contain microchips and make you magnetic because of course they do. I’ve tried to reason with her, but she (and my stepfather) refuse to hear any of it. Both of them live in a rural part of the state with rising case and hospitalization numbers, and both are older with multiple preexisting conditions. Both also refuse to at least wear masks and instead live life as if we aren’t on the brink of a health crisis. I’m scared for them. And the sad part is that this is really, really common here. No one seems to care as our health system is falling apart and we continue to make national and global news. I believe the Delta variant accounts for 85%+ of cases here.

I continue to advocate for the vaccines. I have made appointments for other people and have even provided rides to clinics. I am trying to help in any way I can, because this ultimately impacts everyone and it is in our common best interest for everyone who can be immunized to do so, especially for younger children who are currently entirely reliant on us as the herd for protection. At the very least, if people absolutely refuse, they should be masking up and distance themselves from others but nobody is doing that now, either.

It feels pointless. It feels hopeless. I’m terrified that this state is very rapidly running out of time (if it hasn’t already) to turn this around. Short of federal intervention (which has been offered, but our POS governor apparently responded to with a hearty “Eff off, people will not take kindly to that here”), I fear that this will continue unabated and that a massive wave of severe illness and death is on the horizon.

Apologies for the length; I have extremely strong feelings about our current situation and needed to vent somewhere. I wish I could be like my neighbors and just not care.
My boss at the GP I work at keeps jabbing at me because I'm the only one still wearing a mask in the clinic - "isn't that why you got vaccinated, to not have to deal with that?"

Less than a third of the population in that county are vaccinated. I guarantee that at least half the staff isn't, yet as soon as CDC said fully vaccinated people could mask off, off they all went. Just pisses me off. This is ****ing serious.

*waves from behind my mask*
I’ve been fully vaccinated since March and the state has lifted mandates (but vth is still having staff/students wear them but clients don’t have to and area Lowe’s in the building again) and I am WORRIED STILL. I live in an city that is surrounded by some pretty rural towns. There is no way all of these people who are maskless in the vth are vaccinated. There is no way all of these maskless people in the grocery store are vaccinated either. My chronic illness ass is not taking my chances with these people and the delta variant.

TRUE STORY.

Literally the day that the mask mandate in MN was lifted *FOR VACCINATED PEOPLE* I went to Target and ... I actually counted (yes, I'm that OCD) and 90% of the people did not have masks ... in a state where (at that time) 40% were vaccinated.

HMMMMMMM.

Just one MORE reason to hate the anti-vaxxers. Not only are they idiots; turns out they also are dishonest idiots.

I discussed this with my PT a couple weeks ago. Basically I hypothesize that when out in public (at least in NC) a masked person is more likely to be vaccinated than unmasked, despite being "allowed" to be unmasked.

State wide, we're at 40ish%, but it's way better in the big city counties than more rural ones. Yet somehow when I'm at the coast it's like 80% unmasked, and when I'm in the city it's maybe 50%...

My credit account is mixed up with someone in New Jersey who has a Chinese name one letter different than mine and four years younger. I decided not to interpret it as somewhat racist. 🙄

On hold with Experian for 56min now. As if I don't have to work or something.

Pittie did not have a foreign body!!

But now the Golden has potentially a splenic and lung nodule found incidentally during an ultrasound lab I had today in which she volunteered. So next week, we're going to have an adventure to work to check these out 🙁
