Just choke on all your consonants and pretend your vowels don't exist.

Je ne comprends pas tres bien, mais je peux parler et écrire un peu.
As another (basic) French speaker (used to be pretty conversational but alas….), this 100%. 🤣

Take the number of syllables you think something has, subtract at least one, et voilà!

I am trying to design/decorate the nursery. My thought was a safari or jungle theme with decals or wallpaper.
1) Why are these decals/wallpapers more expensive than all of the nursery furniture combined
2) why are none of them ACCURATE?! You will not catch me slapping a wallpaper up that has both a lion and an Asian elephant on it.
3) How do I avoid AI-generated stuff with this!? Most of it seems to be sketchy websites with random graphics and ugh

It genuinely might be easier to see if a local artist can do some kind of mural for you. My spouse’s mom use to do them and while not cheap, they’re longer lasting, more accurate, more customizable, and better for your community (IF they’re accessible).

Yeah that's the hard part...I've found a local wallpaper company that I'd love to use but I already can't justify $600ish+ for a wall mural or a decent quality decal set from something mass produced. I'm about to just pick a color and scrap the safari theme altogether lol

I've had luck with small Etsy shops before! You need to spend time looking to find them because it's so loaded with drop shippers and AI trash but they are still out there

Instead of a mural or stickers could you take some photos of the animals at work and use those as art? It would be a different approach/vibe, but my friend did that when she wanted a woodland theme and wasn’t finding what she wanted.

It's so expensive because of the baby tax. Just like when venues and suppliers see "wedding" or "birthday" as party of the order, there are what basically amounts to a special event upcharge. Searching without words that have anything to do with a baby can help.

I also second the small business or Etsy approach. But it will absolutely be much higher cost. Could also consider stencils of the creatures. Do a base color and then stencils of the critters over the color. Or a projector and you draw or paint the critters on yourself like tracing paper

I was aiming for a watercolor vibe but If I scrap the murals/decals I could definitely put together some framed pictures! That's a great idea

I used to HATE foreign languages in school, like with a passion. I think for a lot of people the exams around foreign languages just discourage actual growth in the language because mistakes just will happen and I always thought grades were so punishing for foreign languages. Also I could go ONNN about how US education only starts foreign language learning around the exact time it becomes more difficult for our brains to acquire one. (Soap box for another day…) I know at a certain point for certification or citizenship / jobs with other countries a language practical makes sense but I made way more headway with German learning on my own with a native speaker friend than I ever did in a typical classroom.

Aw hell you’re a legend for braving Chinese, I fear I’m not strong enough to leave the Latin alphabet. I’m going to try for Norwegian !(casually)

I fear in a 10 week semester though I will just be stuck memorizing more anatomy with anki …
I want to learn German too! Most of my great grandparents spoke German, but it didn't pass on through the generations. My dad grew up speaking it a little and I wish he hadn't lost it and could have raised me bilingual, but oh well.

I got started with Chinese mostly by accident. My friend offered to teach me and I didn't realize he was actually serious until he sent me a textbook and practice exercises, lol. I probably would never have tried otherwise because it is so intimidating, but it's been really fun even if all I can confidently say so far is "how are you" and "did you drive your car today"

That is really cool about the Chinese! I speak a bit of German as a second language. I took four years of it in high school and two in college. In my opinion, it is one of the easier languages to learn coming from English because English is a Germanic language. Memorizing all of the grammatical genders is a lot, but a lot of the grammatical structures in German and English are pretty similar.

My hot take but I thought German grammar & sentence structure was way more difficult to initially grasp than most Romance languages coming from English. Oh lawd the declension will be the death of me & sometimes I am WAITING for the sentence to make its point with the verb coming at the very end of the sentence lol

May I interest you in L A T I N

The verb can be anywhere it wants. In fact, it might just be behind you.

I remember a history professor I had a few semesters in a row commenting that they noticed my writing style had changed a bit, and I was using a lot of odd sentence structures……. It was the intensive Latin.

I’ll never match the high of all-nighters translating Catullus 16, trying to find the perfect word for the most vulgar terminology…… that certain je ne sais quoi if you will. (But love u 4ever Catullus for 101…….)

I took one semester of Latin in college and was like MORE DECLENSION?? hell no give me my simple English slop. Definitely couldn’t translate anything for **** I never even knew how to say hello. I hear modern Finnish has 15 declension cases….

So far the Chinese grammar I've learned is so much easier to grasp than Spanish or English. There's no verb conjugation rules to memorize and nothing is gendered, it's all so straightforward. Like, I am fully confident that when I start with German someday it's actually going to be harder than Chinese because suddenly I'll have to pay attention to verbs again 🤣

I need braces (see previous posts in this thread). I might need jaw surgery. Current orthodontist wants me to get cleared by a TMJ specialist because I have TMJ and rheumatoid arthritis (concern for jaw stability). TMJ is medical but they don't take my insurance. $500 for consult and x-rays (reasonable but out of budget). Oral surgeon is dental and out of pocket if I need an appliance without surgery called a MARPE, but medical and covered under insurance if I need surgery and an appliance called a SARPE. Can't do braces without being cleared by TMJ, can't deal with surgery until cleared by TMJ, ortho won't use a different specialist.

WHY are my mouth bones a different insurance than my skeleton bones. THEY'RE IN MY SKELETON BONES WHICH ARE THE THING THAT NEED THE THING.

I know I likely just need to go with another orthodontist at this point and even called my insurance to ask about my out of network benefits and the guy seemed to not understand what I was talking about I'm just annoyed by this whole process

I've never understood this, especially when you consider how dental disease can affect a person/animal systemically and vice versa
Seriously.

Also

my mouth bones are attached to my skull bones

My mouth bones are attached to my skull bones

It’s like why are the gelatinous structures in my head sockets any different from my other gelatinous structures elsewhere

But then I get on my soapbox about accessibility and obvious medical assistance devices and how glasses are no different they’re just normalized for some arbitrary reason and I get mad at the world again

Yeah, today I went to the dentist, scheduled an eye doctor appointment for later this week, and attempted to schedule a physical with a new medical provider because my old one moved. But I couldn’t get the medical appointment scheduled because they supposedly couldn’t pull me up on my new insurance provider’s system using either my new member ID nor my social, so now I get to deal with insurance crap tomorrow. Insurance and appointments are important, but I wish it was simpler and more convenient haha.

At least the tooth doctor said I was fine for now. I have horrible teeth despite taking good care of them (yay genetics!) so I was expecting bad news.

I guess I’m feeling frustrated and don’t really have any personal outlets to talk about my feelings. This week I’ve gotten a rejection and waitlisted for two schools that’s don’t have an interview process. That being said I’ve gotten four interview offers. My concern is that maybe I won’t be good enough to get in despite some of the interviews offers i do have.
I totally understand those feelings. Even though I've gotten interviews (And even acceptances!) it's hard to get over the feeling of rejection. But... the interview really is the first hurdle. Your odds have skyrocketed upwards now that you've gotten them!
