My roomie, bf and I just devoured a pan of delicious butternut squash and gingersnap mac and cheese. It was ridiculously good and I'm sad it's gone.

That sounds amazing!

Yeah it does. I just googled that to find recipes. Lobster mac and cheese is amazing too 😀

Ugh. We had our holiday party for work today and went out for lunch. They had this amazing looking lobster mac and cheese and I wanted it so bad. Too bad it wasn't made with rice pasta...

This recipe! With less fancy cheese because I'm poor. And soy milk because that's what I keep in the fridge.

It's delicious and one of my standard potluck recipes because it's good and vegetarian. 🙂

accepted for MARVET 2013 in Mexico!! I am so excited to go play with marine animals for 2 weeks this summer!!:soexcited:

Ahhh. That's really exciting. I'm planning on applying to the Aqua Vet program through Penn and hope to eventually make it to the 3rd course where we get to do that but it's competitive and I probably won't get in.

My Rave: My mom found a dress online that I fell in love with like 3 years ago but wasn't in my size. I caved and bought it online even though it was a bit expensive. Just hoping it will fit since I feel like my weight has been fluctuating lately.

Netflix FINALLY has Disney movies! :soexcited:

I discovered this last week and I was so excited!! Also they have them in Spanish or with Spanish subtitles!! So I have been able to use them to work on my Spanish. I started watching the Fox and the Hound! Such a good movie!

Haha, this is a rare occurrence for me, I'm normally asleep by 11:30-midnight lol

I may not get a lot of kind words for saying this. The last time I shares my views, I was told I would make a horrible vet, that new slaughterhouses were awesome and that Temple Grandin changed everything... but because of a freak chain of events (my father's heart attack, my weight gain, discovering I am somewhat lactose intolerant, seeing a documentary by a good source about the largest pork producer in the country, going to the gym and by befriending vegans), I am making the switch to veganism. Once the animal products are gone out of my house, there will not be any more coming back in.

I was a pescatarian (spelling?) for 6 months after watching food inc. I have converted back into a carnivore since then  but My fiancé said I couldn't do it for even a week... Well I proved him wrong  back on topic.....

Trem, do what makes you happy! if becoming a vegan makes you happy, or is necessary for you, then do ! Don't worry about what everyone thinks.. They will get over it! 😀

Do what makes you happy. Just remember that, just as you don't want to be judged for your decision, don't judge others for not making the same one. I have too many vegan friends who constantly judge me for not being vegan. Not saying this is you, but please keep that in mind bc it's entirely obnoxious. And your diet has nothing to do with you being a good veterinarian or not. :luck:

👍 I think it's great you can do that. I tried. Didn't work out too well.

One of my good friends eventually couldn't stop talking it last summer. I never said anything bad about her being vegan and she didn't say anything to me either, so it worked out well. But one day, she just told me what a horrible person I am for pretending to love the animals that I then so easily eat. That I would be a horrible vet because I didn't truly love the animals. That I probably sit at home with my dogs, loving on them, while thinking "Aw, you're gonna taste so good when I eat you later." Needless to say that we are not friends anymore.

I don't judge anyone for a decision on their diet like that. But don't judge me either and say all of those things.

Anyone who hasn't seen Food, Inc. MUST see it!!!! 👍

I didn't eat meat or dairy for about 7 years. I had GI issues beginning around 6th grade and a pediatric gastroenterologist had me go off all dairy without even running any tests! I never was a meat fan so I stopped eating it when I was like in 8th grade or so.

At 17 I got super duper sick and had to have my gallbladder removed (unrelated to diet as testing revealed). Turns out my protein levels were super low and I slowly started eating dairy and meat again. I'm still not much of a meat eater but I try to eat chicken or turkey at least once/week and red meat once/month. I always buy my meat at Whole Foods 😍 because it isn't pumped with hormones and they are huge advocates for humanely raising/slaughtering animals.

Anyway, I'm not opposed to going vegan just be careful! Make sure you're still getting enough protein in your diet 🙂

I learned that I'm not squeamish at all this weekend!! :soexcited:

In GP we don't really see anything that gory ... but this weekend a woman brought in her dog that had been attacked by 2 other dogs. This dog's neck was literally torn open from the ear down to the bottom of the neck and his trachea was exposed! It's a miracle he lived :wow:

He has a long recovery ahead, poor guy 🙁

I read a rather interesting article on the vegan/vegetarian "judging" rather recently, thought it was pretty fun. Good on ya for being able to do veggie/vegan, I've cut pretty strongly back on animal products in my life but not all the way.

Thanks for the support everyone. I really appreciate it. 🙂

I was a tiny bit worried about posting that in the Rave Here thread because I know there may be a few people on here who think I have been brain-washed by PETA or that I am naive about what I will have to do in vet school (which is not the case).

I have been vegetarian for 9 years and have not have any health problems related to my diet (knock on wood). I also don't judge. 95% of the people I know eat meat. So what? As long as they do not poke at me for not eating meat, I will not poke at them for eating it.

I have a problem with a friend of mine who makes sarcastic comments about it all of the time. Last time it was "Look at my new shoes! There are 3 kinds of dead animal in it." Before that, it was "Why don't you wear leather shoes?" (I explain). "Why does it matter? The cow has already been made into hamburger anyway." All of those comments were uninvited by the way. People need to learn to worry about themselves. What I choose to eat really does not matter (unless they see me making a meal out of a giant bag of chips or something... every day)

I am not going to force family and friends to get on board with this. I am thankful enough that they cater to me not eating meat. I do not think it is fair in most cases to make them cater to me being vegan. I do want to eat vegan at home, when at restaurants and when the opportunity is there in other cases.

I am savouring my last iced cappuccino at the moment. I am not sure when I am officially going to start. Probably when we get a chance to hit up the grocery store and the organic market. I have already started doing some reading on what I should be eating and what I should be supplementing.

Thank you for listening to my rave. I am actually very excited about trying this.

I asked for a juicer for Christmas. It is going to be rather helpful if I get that.

vegan foods are actually really beneficial. In plant based products alone, you can consume almost all of your daily intake of vitamins and nutrients 🙂
I'm a huge fan, and WISH I could fully go vegan, but I just love my chicken and dairy way too much! I admire your decision! 😀

I watched this documentary on netflix, Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. I have actually tried the 3 day cleansing, and it is crazy good. I try to do it once a month 🙂
juicers are AWESOME! and if you look up the website, it has tons of recipes!

I stopped eating pork last year at the start of vet school and only have cage-free or free range eggs. I don't have a problem killing animals for food, only how they are raised to become food. So I'm selective about what I eat/where I buy it. This is morally satisfactory to me. Good luck on the switch, Trem!

My rave- TRAIL MIX in my mailbox!! Thanks Coquette😍

My rave- TRAIL MIX in my mailbox!! Thanks Coquette😍

🙂 I wanted to do something for my crew, since lord knows, you all make vet school way more fun than it probably should be. I thought it'd be a nice change from the usual chocolate (not that A's almond bark wasn't delicious!).

And I seriously love trail mix SO MUCH.

Abney- it's probably the hardest thing about not eating pork:laugh: I eat turkey bacon, though, which I find really delicious. Plus they always cut it to look like bacon so it's all wavy and perfect haha.

My BF's parents were driving me crazy because they adopted a dog from a shelter and she has been the most amazing dog. She was so easy to train that his mom started to do search and rescue with her. She has started to get old, so they decided that they would get a full breed dog to replace her once she goes because they don't want to deal with the "incosistencies" of shelter dogs😡. The breeder is obviously against spaying/ neutering so his parents haven't neutered the dog who is now a year and a half, extremely male dog agressive, diffucult to train, marks everything (including my leg!) Well after much conversing and pleading.... They are getting him neutered today!!! Yay!

But... bacon....?!?!?!?!?! 😱

That's what people always say when I tell them I don't eat pork! I must say, I've been around bacon being eaten, and I think it looks/smells...I'm not gonna say gross, but how about "not for me."

Though, my opinion may be colored: my one experience with pork in my entire life was eating breakfast sausage in an airplane meal. Blech. I don't think even the most ravenous pork-lover would have liked those.

:eyebrow:
I can tell you that I definitely don't like a lot of sausages but please don't think that's what pork tastes like  Sounds awful!

My rave: parasitology exam in 5 hours, then three friends and I are driving around looking at Christmas lights tonight, eating yums, and watching a movie. Because tomorrow it's on to studying for neuro :uhno:

So this is a rave and a rant: I get to bring home my Boston on Jan. 5, but I also have to wait until Jan. 5 so he can recover from his heartworm treatment. I understand, but I'm so excited to bring him home, I don't want to wait.

It sounds like you always not eaten pork. Trust me, it's really hard to turn down once you've had it well prepared haha! The thing about bacon is that everyone likes it differently. My parents like theirs essentially burnt so growing up I was like eh, bacon. But when I cooked it the way that I like(d 🙁) to eat it, it's amazing! Turkey bacon takes it place for me, though.

Just bought ugly new shoes for my OSU interview this weekend. Except now I don't like them with the shirt I was going to wear. Not sure this is really a rave at all but oh well!

I would have eaten pork growing up (I didn't go kosher till I was 12), and bacon never smelled good to me. In restaurants, at my house (not that my parents cooked it much), at friends' houses, etc. I always thought it just smelled greasy and smoky, my two least favorite flavors. I have tried turkey bacon, which I thought tasted blech, and vegan 'bacon flavored popcorn' which I was told tasted like bacon, which I also thought tasted blech. I have never liked any smoked food item I have ever had, including smoked salmon (which you'd think I would like, given that a bunch of my family are New York Jews!). (I do know that bacon isn't always smoked, but many pork products are, right?)

The thing I really miss from my non-kosher days is cajun crawfish, cooked popcorn-chicken style, with cream dipping sauce. MMMMMMMM was that stuff good.

Rave: got a new toster oven! One that actually works! That can cook stuff!

Bacon is usually smoked and cured by "definition" but most pork is not. Unless you're talking BBQ pork... (Also smoked by definition) Mmmmm

Jealous. I'm waiting until Jan 5th for mine to come home. I miss my family's dogs so much. They have two other Bostons back home. They are some of the best dogs ever.

Did you know Oscar Mayer makes a nitrate and nitrite free bacon? It's yummy without all the carcinogens. And it's not too much more expensive than the regular stuff.
