Only 7 days until I go home. I can't freaking wait. The closer it gets, the more jittery and excited I get.

I just hope they let me into the country. I'm going to be so thrilled to be back in the States, border patrol might think I'm a crazy person.

shadowed a new vet at a local clinic today…
little did I know he's specializes in orthopedic surgery.. was a pretty cool day and saw some really interesting things!
To top it off, he is a golf enthusiast and asked me to play with him this weekend… I think this may be a future letter of rec 😀
let him win at golf

besides the obvious family/friends/break from school sort of stuff, what are you most looking forward to getting back to?

Super excited that it's snowing!! Can't wait to take Geordie out and see how he acts in. Only downside right now is that I'm studying at the school and didn't wear my snow boots down cause I thought it was going to snow way later and not nearly as much as it is. The weather channel is usually wrong when it snows so I didn't expect it to actually happen.

Mostly all of that stuff, but also just getting back to the US. Canada is great and all, and it's really not that different, but it just isn't home.

gotcha - there is so much talk about foods we miss here (in addition to the family/friends/etc) and other americanized things that don't exist in non-1st world places 🙂 just curious if that sort of thing extended to you guys or was more uniquely caribbean. i am desperately going to miss the beautiful weather here though - i'm pretty happy to trade it for a month of steak and chinese food and yummy desserts and not having to cook and not eating chicken every single day because its pretty much the only meat here i'll eat (beef is expensive and limited, pork sketches me out, i dont eat any seafood). and shopping! endless shopping!

Shopping. Mall of America!

Food that I don't have to cook in my one skillet.

Oh yeah, there's definitely some of that here too. First thing I want to do when I cross the border is find a Dunkin Donuts. Tim Horton's makes good coffee, but their flavored coffee leaves much to be desired. Also Chipotle! There's one just off the highway when I get to New Hampshire that I'm planning on hitting for dinner. There's a real lack of good "ethnic" food on the island - the only Mexican is from a little stand in the farmer's market and I've yet to find anything Indian other than very bland generic curries. Might be more of a "stuck on an island" thing since there's really no going elsewhere to get those things.

Also can't wait for cheaper prices. A package of shredded cheese for less than $6? Being able to completely fill my gas tank for $100 or less? Sign me up.

All of this. I am so giddy with excitement to get home, I hardly even care about finals. I mean I do, but I'm going home! It's hard to be upset about finals approaching because I know what's happening afterwards. Plus, this is going to sound so sappy, but I just really want a freaking hug from my family or boyfriend....whoever picks me up from the airport. I don't think I've had that kind of physical contact with anyone since I left in August..and I just want a hug lol I also can't wait for some proper customer service. Whoever my first waitress or waiter is, is going to think I'm nuts because I'll be so appreciative of their good service.

Oh also- someone posted this on facebook and it gave me a good laugh:
"Young white students counting the days until they leave a beautiful tropical island.. same students who argue privilege doesn't exist."

So true!

i forget you guys are on an island as well! lack of "ethnic" food, chains, and reasonably priced groceries is a problem for all!

Don't know where you cross, but there's a DD in Houlton at the rest stop right past the border.

There's a Chipotle in Portland that is always my first stop for food 😀 And I am already planning to buy ALL of the Cracker Barrel cheese (2/$5 last I heard) when I get home. I'm pretty sure food is the biggest thing I look forward to other than family/friends. I always hit Chipotle first and then get Chikfila when I get further south (don't think you have 'em that far north, BD). Pretty sure I eat Mexican food for a straight week when I get home

Also, @Coquette22 put baked goods in my mailbox and it was delicious 😍

Some people stress eat. I stress bake and then feed people.

And it's not just the Americans who can't wait to go home. I am so ready to be off this island for a few weeks. Back to the land of Second Cup (there's one in Halifax and I will be stopping), people who can drive and use signal lights, and where "plow the road" means "plow the road", not "scrape the top 1 cm off and leave the rest to turn into a glare of ice, assuming we get around to plowing it at all".

Yes, I am the same way.... can't wait to get back to the states. There are just some things that you can't get anywhere else and I am really happy to be with family again. And to see my cat (of course).... 🙂

Only 5 more days!!! 😀 😀

Oh, PEI plows roads like Massachusetts does...

They do! I didn't even notice a problem until I heard everyone else complaining.

At least UPEI actually plows their sidewalks. My undergrad didn't want to scrape up the blades on their little bucket loader plows, so they'd plow an inch above the ground and let everything else turn to slush and refreeze over night. Walking around campus was treacherous in the winter. You know it's bad when walking in the road is safer than the sidewalk.

Wait for it; it's not always good. Numerous occassions I showed up to school, when school was open, and the parking lot wasn't plowed out. And it took them awhile to get around to plowing all the campus walk ways on Thursday. And there was a distinct lack of salt. Oi.

despite all the tears today (ironically not a single one school related), i finished the evening with the most beautiful night dive i've done here in grenada. just breath taking! so very worth forgoing a nap during finals week for!

Multi rave time
1) EXAMS ARE OVER!
2) I am going to see the Hobbit tonight.
3) My landlord popped in early this morning to drop off a package (that the delivery person had left on the doorstep in the middle of the night, wtf?) and gave me Skor bar fudge she made.
4) My former surgery group mate gave me a bottle of wine.

For my clinical techniques exam today, I got horse. The only freaking animal I didn't want. So why is this a rave? I passed! I have no idea how, but I passed😀

Last year, we had handling exams on all the species... I was dreading cattle, still don't know how I passed. At one point he asked me how old the cow was and I stood back looked at the cow and said, "she is three". :smack:In my defense, it was the last handling exam I had and at the very end of the day of a very long week. He just laughed; I think he realized we were all exhausted from lambing during Easter and the previous handling exams.

I think the large animal professors are all just much cooler and laid back. They know a lot of us have never touched cows or horses before coming to vet school and take pity on us, thankfully! That **** would never fly in the small animal technique exam.

Teehee.

An MD came to pick up his dog after a spay, and had some more questions about it during the discharge than most clients with him being a medical professional and all. Then when I showed him the incision site, he commented about how this incision was so much smaller and nicer than his other dog's, who he took to another vet (implying that's why he trusts this fine academic institution with great surgeons so much). He had no idea it was me who had done it. Shoulda said something like, "oh thanks, I've been practicing all week!" But I couldn't think fast enough on my feet. I was super proud of myself for getting my spays (even for an old fatty though little dog) under 30 min of surgery time from open to close that day from being pretty pokey before, so that really made me feel super extra awesome sauce!

That time when you are .8 away from the next letter grade up and you get an email saying that one question was graded wrong and some people got points added back to their final exam score. And when you go and look, you are actually one of those people! Yay for performing well in vet school!

Obligatory done with finals post!

Plus, I'm 99% sure that I did well enough this semester to finally bring my GPA up to my goal of 3.0....after riding the anatomy and physiology struggle bus and getting Cs first year, it's been a long journey to finally break the 3.0 mark.

It's crazy to me that I live somewhere where winter happens. I'm still completely enchanted by the snow! I'm sure I'll get sick of it, but right now I still keep staring out the glass door, and think it's beautiful. 🙂
I loved doing undergrad in a place with snow! I don't think I would like it as much if I had to drive in it though. 😛

Well I don't have snow anymore now that I'm back down south.

I am home!!! Finally!! After all of this:

1. First flight was an hour late leaving due to a technical error with the valve that controls the cabin pressure. Glad they were able to fix it.
2. Second flight was about 45 minutes late due to a car crash that had the crew for the flight stuck in traffic.
3. I had a 2 hour layover between my first flight and second flight, that was reduced to an hour and a half because of the delay. I have to get through customs, get my luggage, drop it off again, then go back through security in an hour and a half.
4. There was a plane at the gate we were going to so, hour and a half reduced even further.
5. The line in customs at Dallas was wrapping back around through the baggage area and back upon itself. It was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen, people had made it so that there was no "end" to the line and the line was diverging in 2 different directions and one part of the line was going in a circle around one of the baggage carousels, so you weren't getting anywhere. I finally had to just cut in line. Now down to 40 minutes to get to flight.
6. Line in security was luckily quite quick, but almost got pulled aside for the good ol' TSA check...
7. Had to switch terminals to get to the next flight, made it with flight leaving in 15 minutes.
8. Get home and guess whose luggage was not there... although this did not surprise me as they had less than 40 minutes to get my luggage to my flight. It came in later that night, so I had to go back and pick it up.

I am home now though!!!! And so happy! And I have this little cuddly gray kitty to snuggle with for a couple of weeks:

Made it home safely and almost in record time, except I made a quick detour along the way and got to briefly see my boyfriend for the first time in 4 months. 🙂

Only had to deal with snow for the last hour so it really wasn't a bad drive at all. And as usual my cat was a rockstar and spent 12 hours in the car without a single complaint!

Grades just posted and I made all As! Barely made an A in Toxicology, but it's still an A! Also received an email from the professor saying he was so impressed by my paper over the impacts of SGARs on non-target wildlife that he'd like to submit it to the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health for consideration for publication. 😀 I'm finally feeling like I deserve to be a PhD student.

...I'm HOLDING A BALD EAGLE. Best. selective. ever. 🙂

I volunteered at an avian rehabilitation center for 8 months and we never had a bald eagle as a patient/rescue/education bird. My jealousy is infinite right now. 😛

Saw Frozen in theaters today. It was AMAZING. Seriously. Best Disney movie ever.

Last weekend I was super upset because I thought I failed a test based on the score that was presented at the end of the test. I spent Saturday and Sunday stressing and crying over stupid things. Today, I looked at my grade and the score that I saw initially was not adjusted on a 100 point scale. I didn't fail! I feel much better.

Little late posting... but it felt great to be done with finals on the first day 😀 extra week of break for me yay!

Drove 14 hours yesterday by myself and only the first and last hour and a half were less than enjoyable. Took a real nice stop to visit my aunt and uncle in pa for the night and now I'll be off to finish driving home in a bit. The cats were absolutely perfect in the car other than one refuses to pee every time. they just slept in their carrier the entire time. Made for a very unstressful drive.

Ps. For anyone who has car sick cats, last time I drove we used injectable cerenia, but this time we're using the oral. I was a little worried it wouldn't be as effective but it worked like a charm. Did 2x's the nausea treatment dose and I gave it the night before since it lasts 24 hrs. No puking from my kitty that normally hurls after 15min.
