Hey guys....

I know this has been brought up before but after a thorough search I still couldn't find it...but does anyone have an opinion about how good your chances are if you are one of the first groups to get interviewed????....Is it still common to get rejected? Maybe some of you guys who applied last year have some insight on this?....Thanks...

I'd say that your odds are 75/25 (accept/rejected) instead of 50/50 if you are in the 1st group. I interviewed in the 1st group at 6 schools last year and was rejected by only one so i think your chances are good but not 100%.

what counts as being 'first round'?

do you really think the chances are 50/50 at most schools normally? i know each school is different, but roughly is this the case?

Ok 50/50 might be a little high, schools tend to interview 3 times the class size so your odds are like 1 in 3 but knowing the odds isn't going to help you. Just rock the interviews =D

The odds are indeed one to three, but you also have to factor in the people that get accepted and turn down the acceptance and the people who don't show up to their interviews. Some cycles they'll send out more than a time and a half of the class size, sometimes even double before they fill the entire class. So your chances end up do becoming a little better. Good luck!

The most recent ADEA guide to dental schools has a section showing number of applicants interviewed and number accepted. Not all schools reported their data though. For some schools it looks like if you have an interview, your chances are very high (UCLA) and others interview a lot more than seats they have. One of those I noticed was Nova, but they also accepted way more people than seats available b/c of the students that drop them for other choices. It's a helpful table if you can get ahold of that book.

interviewed at 5 pre-december, accepted at 5. i think that if you are granted an interview, the acceptance is for you to lose. you have a lot of control over how your interview pans out, so practice, practice and practice. basically, you know that your numbers have made the cut, and they are definitely interested in getting to know you better.

if you are accepted at schools that you'd like to attend pre december 1, definitely withdraw from other schools that you like less and cancel interviews at schools that you would not want to attend even if granted admission.

i also found that during the interview process that i was able to gauge approximately my odds of gaining acceptance, so i felt comfortable pushing some interviews beyond the new year, so that i could cancel them if i got good news. it's an expensive and tiring process, especially if you are flying from coast to coast a lot. i definitely remember changing the interview dates for buffalo and nyu for after the new year and then canceling them in december.
