Are there any "reliable" medical school rankings out there besides the famous (infamous?) US News and World Report? I especially wanted to see what residency programs thought of different schools (besides the old "do well and you'll be fine")

US News residency rankings are pretty accurate, as long as you remember that East Coast residency programs are prejudiced against midwesterners (even great schools like Umich, Pritzker, and Case).

U.S. News doesn't lie about the subcategories on its rankings. The problem comes from the odd formula they use to compute the overall rankings.

One way to see the a ranking of all US schools is to see how much NIH money they get from the Government:
http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/award/rank/medttl.htm

This site lists the money given for 2001. Its not a perfect gage - but its something, and at least you can see all of the schools in a somewhat "objective" manner. Well, anyways - if your school isn't a "top 30" or something this may be the only way I know of getting a general idea of the $ coming into the school. Well, hope it helps. God knows the schools I interviewed at weren't top 30 schools but I still wanted to know something about them- and this was really all I could find. IN fact I was pleasently surprised by where my schools were ranked

Oh - but keep in mind that this is skewed b/c
1) Some schools get alot of money from other places
2) Some schools are alot smaller than others and may not need as much money
3) lots of other factors

So - this really is just another tool to use

Does the Princeton Review still put out rankings?

Someone said it perfectly..... US News is accurate within subcategories.... but the formula is not perfect (far from it).

But if you want to know what residency programs think of a certain school... the US News "Reputation amongst Residency Directors" is very accurate.

I agree that the East Coast schools do not respect the Midwest schools and the West Coast schools as much as they should.... but with that included.... US News "Reputation" ranking is very accurate.
