Rosalind Franklin BMS 2011-2012 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
to former BMSers,
this may be a dumb question, but
do you think Recommendation letters for the AMCAS or secondaries would affect my chance of getting into CMS?
or is it just LITERALLY your performance in the program and interview?

How the heck can anyone answer that definitively? Not even the academic advisors can give you an answer - only the admissiosn committee can give you a definitive answer.

From my own experience - letters were 2 from profs and 1 from pastor (letters were not that strong), I have barely any research experience, but I think I did well in the interview - I also did well in the BMS program. The most important factor by far is your performance in the BMS program. I can say that definitelvy because my original MCAT score which I am very convinced they saw (they did not see my 2nd MCAT score in time) was way below averayge (21)

Do you best in everything - MCAT, GPA, AMCAS, letters, interviews, performance. Anyone who says they disregard certain things can not say that with confidence because only the adcom makes the decisions and they never release info like that..every year is different (i,e. this year no info rleeased until May)

Short story: do your best in this program and pay little attention to the heresay. You might be curious to know but don't get too caught up in the rumours.

🙁 i knew it was a stupid question.
but thanks for your honest input drake

I agree that there is no mention of character limits, but if you click on each field it will tell you what the limit is. 1st and 2nd question-1500 characters each, 3rd one is 500.

There is no mention of character limits. They just give you a big white empty box to copy and paste your essay into. I plan on making mine a page and a half long at most.

Thank you so much, DoctaBryan. Do you mind sharing the character/word/page limit for the secondary questions? Thanks in advance!

Thank you for the update. I was a bit weary about how long it should be. That character count will definitely limit my rambling!

Hi all,

I already have a BU MAMS acceptance and really like that program.

However, i emailed [email protected] about my application and was told it was already reviewed and i should be receiving a decision in couple of days.

Should I be worried this is a rejection because someone said earlier in this thread that now acceptances would be emailed out??

Previous year threads mention about email acceptance before fedex packages, packages only and no email, etc, etc, etc.

Maybe they just do different things from time to time?

Was everyone accepted so far only accepted via snail mail? Were you able to find out by phone, etc?

Mine was by both phone and snail mail in a large white RFU envelope. Hope this helps!

I'm also playing the waiting game, but when I called I was told that acceptances are going out via email and rejections via snail mail. Yesterday, Melissa Knox told me decisions would be going out within the next week. Not sounding too promising on my behalf.

Yup. I got an email that said "you should be receiving a decision from the committee within a couple of days".

Looks like Im heading to BU MAMS. Maybe it will work out for the better.

Hi everyone!
By any chance do you guys know what the best way is to look for an apartment close to RFUMS?
is there anyone looking for a roommate??

Thank you!

check out woodlands last i checked they had a few more spots available.

Just received my acceptance an hour ago...looks like its between here and drexel's IMS...any opinions?

i would come here hsh.
Drexel's program used to be good i heard
but past few years, they just started to be bad.
But again, do not just listen to me. ask more!

Hii,
is there anyone looking for a roommate close to RFUMS??

I am from illinois...Anyone not wanna live in north chicago? Its straight hood up there...I rather drive ten minutes then live up there? Who lives off campus where at?

Hi former BMSers.
I'm sorry if my question is out of the academic scope but I was wondering if RFU has a weight lifting gym as part of the athletic amenities.
I will be living at Woodlands and I heard that the gym there isn't that well equipped.

N.B. I will not ship my car to Chicago so nearby gyms are not an option.

Thanks.

Here's a list of the amenities available, and the picture looks like there are free weights available.

Hi! Does anyone know if RFUBMS supports students who are applying to other med schools? For example, I know Tufts MBS sends out supplemental letters telling schools about the program and the student's academic progress in it. Does RFU do anything like this or are you totally on your own?
Thanks!

I have already locked an apartment at Woodlands ready to move in but I have got a 1 bedroom on campus re-offered. I have till tomorrow to give out my final decision concerning the on-campus availability.

Any insights from former BMSers will be highly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Cavallo, how important is being able to move out right after finishing the BMS program? If it's not too important then get the deal at the Woodlands. If it is, go for on-campus housing.

Thanks for the insight. Well, here is the situation. I will have to sign up for 12 months at Woodlands versus 10 months on campus. So I am paying 2 additional months at woodlands which is $2200 worth. I don't know if it is the right decision to move to Woodlands.

Of course I am aiming for Medical School at RFU but I do not know if this is something to be taken into consideration.

What size binders do past BMS students suggest we use to keep all of our lecture notes in? Are 3 inch ones ridiculously too big?

Hi everyone, I'm excited to join you all this fall! I'm looking for a chill, no-drama roommate for what looks to be an intense year of study. I'm not really sure what kind of housing is available this late in the game, but PM me if you're interested in sharing a place!

I'm a 28 year old non-smoking female -- flexible and easy-going, friendly, responsible, clean, and respectful. I'm coming from California and it will be my first time in the midwest!

I would say that 3" binders are never too big if you are planning on printing the slides you will be going over and keeping all your notes in one place.

Nonetheless, if you think that you will be uncomfortable carrying a growing-heavy and bulky binder for a while each day around the campus, I would say that you get smaller binders just for the sake of the weight issue and ease of displacement.

So at the end, it is a matter of personal preference. I hope that this helped.

Hey guys! I recently got accepted to the BMS program and I'm really excited about it. I've read that as a BMS student who then gets accepted into CMS, the medical school courses we take will be credited towards an MD. However, since we don't take all of the courses, how do the rest of the years work? We go from being a BMS to M1a. How many years after the BMS year does it take to finish?

I sent everything on June 1st, got my white envelope July 14th...I called and was told I received an email; but I have been checking my email non stop, didnt have anything in there.....

With that said, for those of you who will look at this post next year and wonder whether or not to apply to the program if it is too late aka DEADLINE...

apply however late it is... you never know what can be in store for you!!! My stats were very average, don't feel comfy posting em until I actually get into Med school, not sure why...

Just handed in my criminal background check money, and stuff...

What do I do next? fin aid? room and board? should i forget hopes about campus housing being this late in the game??

If anyone needs a clean, quiet, male roommate PM pls. (only near by places, not willing to commute).

Congrats neogenics! Make sure you get the immunization/health stuff done, they seem to require a ton of stuff (a full physical, titers and the whole shabang). In terms of housing, I applied for on-campus housing like 3 weeks ago and was basically told that its highly unlikely I would get anything. So I'd recommend hunting for an apartment. There's a few people still looking for roommates in Woodlands apartments (across the street from campus) so you should probably join the Facebook group to figure something out.

I am a former BMS student. I had a 1 inch binder for each class that I would carry around with me to class, the library, etc. In these binders I kept whatever lecture notes/slides/etc were pertinent to that 2 week testing period. After the exam, I moved all the stuff into a 3 inch binder which I kept at home. This worked well for me because I wanted to keep all of my papers organized, but didn't want to be carrying around huge binders every day. As a heads up, I ended up with a full 3 inch binder for CMCB, Biochem, and Neuro... physio has two 3 inch binders worth, it's a huge class with lots of info.

So I'm finishing up my amcas and I had a question - when I am adding my colleges to the application, I am unsure how to label the BMS program. Under colleges, I select graduate study, and select Illinois, but in the drop down menu there is no Rosalind Franklin University; the only division of RFU I see is Chicago Medical School. What did you guys put on your AMCAS? Did you choose CMS or did you choose "other" and write in Rosalind Franklin?

Thanks

I was just wondering...is tuition different for M1 students who have completed the BMS program since you are only enrolled in half of the classes?

I need to find a roommate ASAP. I'm clean and studious male. Male or female doesn't matter. Please pm me if you are looking for one!

Nope, FULL TUITION for M1As

If a full Tuition is to be paid, then a M1 student has to take a full load of credits.
If so, will classes from M2 year be taken during the M1 year? In that case, won't M2 year be less expensive or ending sooner?

Any advise on a high end sturdy backpack. It has to be rainproof.
Usage will be for books/binders, laptop and gym as well.

Thanks.

I was recently admitted to the BMS program, and I'm looking for someone to share an apartment with. Preferably male, non-smoker, etc. Message me if anyone is interested.

To those who have lived or plan on living in student housing, are we able to access wireless internet or able to set up wireless internet?

Thanks in advance!

Question for past BMS students:

Since lectures are recorded, would you recommend missing class and studying on your own time? Not sure how it works at RFUMS, but I've heard mixed reviews about how beneficial attending class actually is.

What do you guys think?

It really depends on your study style. I would recommend to start out going to class and see if it works for you. If you get nothing out of it and are better studying off of the recordings at your own pace, then go for it! If going to class works then do that. I know a lot of people who went to class and got in and then there were the people who never went to class and got in.

Hey! There's no wireless in student housing unless you bring in your own router!

Just got the booklist- anyone have any advice about textbooks? Like which ones we really need? Looks like it would be pretty expensive to buy/rent all these...

Hey! There's going to be a session at Orientation where we past BMSers will tell you EVERYTHING there is to know about what books to get and what books are a waste of time. But if you want to know right away and don't want to look back a couple pages, a majority of people bought:

- BRS Physiology
- Haines Atlas (for Neuro)

I'd say these are your most useful books to buy for the classes that you should ABSOLUTELY get. Other people also bought:

- West's Respiratory Physiology
- Vander's Renal Physiology
- the neuro textbook (that I've forgotten in the two months away from school) haha.

It's really up to you on how you use textbooks. If you're worried about spending the money the library has all these books available for you if you want to test them out first and see how you like them. For the most part though, what you will be tested on will be presented in class.

Ok thanks alohakaoha, that sounds much better than buying all of them...I've attached the booklist to this post as a word file, if you can't open it for some reason PM me.

Thanks a lot. Great help. I have had last year's but I wasn't sure if they would go with the latest editions. Apparently, they did.

Thanks again.
