Yo, yo - YO! Unless something changes between now and July 24, CMS, here I come! Werd!

I am not really good at that, am I?

About the CA thing, people around here jokingly call CMS "the University of California - Chicago"! 42% of the students last year were from CA.

is there any reason why RFU favors Californians so heavily?....I know there are a lot of applicants coming out of that state who wont be getting into their state schools but come on, thats almost half the class

I'm still waiting to hear - interviewed in Jan.

About the location - I'm not sure its all that bad. There are over $1million homes just south of the school. Lake forest & Lake bluff i think. Apparantly Micheal Jordan owns a home nearby somewhere there. I would hardly call a place with over $1million real estate destitute. Boring yes. And like you said it will keep us focused for 2 years anyways.
Hope to see yall there

Cheers and good luck

Michael Jordan lives in Highland Park, which is south of the school.

Hey HOMIES!!
I'm glad that people are enjoying this thread...it is a chance for those of us planning to go to get excited about starting school again (boo). YEAH! you all didn't know that CMS started so early huh? only 4 months away. get ready..I found out that orientation begins july 24th by just checking the academic calendar on teh rfums/cms website, which was a bitch to find, by the way...Same as the rest of you, unless some more promising UC calls (which they won't), Chicago here I come.

Also, I asked them why so many californians come to CMS, and their answer was simply that CA has many qualified applicants!

I'm excited about moving into some on campus housing...mid july, spruce up my pad, and decorate my apartment too!

I asked a friend about this and he mentioned that not only does Cali have lots of applicants with good stats but also schools like RFU know that since Cali schools are hell to get in to, these applicants wont turn them down nearly as often as applicants from other states who get into their state school...by the way how much is tuition at RFU?

JulioFly said:
This thread is for those of us who are going to be going to Chicago Med in the summer (Yes, orientation begins July 24)....and who are anxious, but still excited!! I am a californian, but originially from outside of chicago, and for those of you who know the area (i.e. Waukegan, N. Chicago), it is the most destitute, boring place you could ever imagine yourself for 2 years...perfect for a medical school i suppose...but who cares?! it's still medical school and it's going to be awesome...let the commiserating begin...
Where ma homies at!?

Hey JulioFly, long time no see. I hope you are having fun on your time off before med school. Looks like I will be attending Penn State unless I get into a better school. IM me some time.

Those rates are for the on-campus apartments. For reference, the woodlands is selling out and converting to condominiums for next year. I'm not sure if ALL of them are being converted or just portions. Regardless, I'm sure lots of students are going to buy them, and then rent them out. It all works. If you are wanting a place a little bit further away (7-10 minute drive) where you'll still find SOME students but not entirely students, look into "northern crossing apartments". It's not walking distance, which can be inconvenient, but I really do love my apartment. and I love having my own washer and dryer. There's another similar set up in apartments called "Forest Pointe". The only thing walking distance though is going to be the Woodlands or the on-campus ones.

i have a house, credit card bills that i worked hard to build up in my 29 years, too many four legged (and no legged) mouths to feed, car insurance, undergraduate student loans and the usual "living expenses" such as food, gas, etc. to pay.....$16,000 is not enough in my opinion!

Hay guys! whats goin on in this thread?! I know none of you are going to beat me in the housing lottery, the 8-ball said so.

Just be yourself. You have made it this far. I think they want to know you as a person. Nobody that got interviewed with me felt stressed or pressured. Only thing I can say is that they do ask some sort of ethic based question, so you might want to read about that. The interview feedback will help with that. Good Luck!!!

Hi Everybody,
Did anybody get any housing, matriculation, or financial aid information yet? Just curious.

Negative; However I was browsing along their website and found the applications for housing, so I completed that. I'll give them a jingle tommorow to see when the fin-aid stuff should be in the mail. I assume its in late april or may since the class will be pretty much set by then. I'll let you guys know. Also I had called earlier about transcripts and if you send them now it's ok to send them to the addmissions office; but later on you will have to send them to the registrar's office instead.

you know, i was just wondering the same thing. the financial aid stuff is online mostly, and you use your undergrad sallie mae username/password to get into the loan apps for the most part.

ok, i am breaking down and calling tomorrow....or maybe i will just drive out there....to extract some info out of RFU on financial aid, etc. i want to know if there is anything else required other than what is on the website. do they offer scholarships/grants on entrance? if all this financial aid stuff is due june 1st, why have we not been notified about it? (i am REALLY anal and like to be officially informed of timelines, etc) although, i must say, of the FA stuff i have filled out so far, RFU's pales in comparison to the complexity, etc of the others....which has me a little scared :scared: and a little optimistic :D meaning, either they don't give out $ other than loans, so they really don't need anything other than a FAFSA and your credit check, OR - they are more laid back about it (like my undergrad, which recognized my HUGE financial need and my good GPA and gave me about $40,000 in scholarships/free $ aid during my 4 years there). i hope it is the latter!!!!

hi red dot
we're excited because:
we're (i'm) coming from canada and looking to learn medicine and become competent doctors in an environment of diverse and hardworking peers who have had similar academic and cultural backgrounds as myself.
we're looking at the next four years as a huge opportunity to prove ourselves academically, continue in CMS's tradition of high board scores and solid residency matches and take away the experiences of rotating through multiple hospital sites and make the necessary contacts to establish oneself in chicago and within its healthcare industry.
we're looking to meet peers who want to party hard, who are able to connect and who study like their books are on fire.

hehe
maybe i should phone up rfu and ask if i can get paid for this post ;)
timmy -- here's to financial aid !! :p

here here!!! financial aid all the way, baby!
i am certainly overly anal about studying, and i have always found myself with my nose in my books when others are out whooping it up, so you guys will have to teach me a thing or two about this "party hard" business! the other day a friend of a friend was trying to teach me how to get out there and shake my groove thang and i must admit that i was a little terrified. :scared: he kept telling me "you're doing fine! no really, you HAVE rhythm" but i think he was just being very nice. you guys have your work cut out for you - can you convert Timmy from a bookworm to a party animal???? i certainly do have a wild side, but it does not know how to dance, dress sexy or hold liqour! ;)

Hey everyone!
Is it just me or has no one heard from CMS since your acceptance letter? What happened?
As for housing, I got shafted with my only option of on campus housing being a 2 bedroom, so I will have to share with a stranger.
I have put my name on a couple waitlists at the Woodlands, hopefully to get a one bed room or a two bedroom (which would be better than an on campus 2 bedroom <-- they are so small!)
Anyone else in the same boat?
I have had lots of bad experiences with roommates in undergrad adn I don't want to re-live this during med school...I'm a female and the issues were always with other women. go figure.
Maybe it's time to consider a male roommate...but a CLEAN one PLEASE.
any takers?!

Congrats on being here everyone!

Ive been accepted to both RFU and drexel and I am torn on which school I should go to. For those of you going to RFU, are you choosing RFU over another school? If so why are you choosing to go to RFU? And do you know if they have a second look?

P.S. about housing...I submitted my application for on campus housing a while back and I haven't heard anything yet...did anyone else? Thanks.

What is it that you like about RFU and what is it that you like about Drexel? Different things? I'd be interested to know what you think is most important. I am choosing RFU over some other schools and for reasons that I'm sure most other people are too...
Their students do consistently well on the boards (high) and their match list is really good. Also, the clinical experience in the 5 different hospitals in the chicago area also really speaks for the great matches that RFU seniors get.
And I just liked the people when I went there.
Yeah north chicago is pretty boring...but it's more about the people than the location of where you'll have your nose in the books for 2 years.
Good luck deciding

Hey Mimi. I hope you had a great spring break. The poster above (Gracey103) graduated from my school last year. We were both in the same club, etc. What a small world :)

Gracey103, keep me updated on your status at UCI and Washington. Good luck to you :luck: Also I interviewed with JulioFly at RFU a while back.

Why does everyone keep downplaying the amount of free time you will have during your first two yrs of med school?? I was under the impression that you have the MOST free time as a first and second year versus your third and fourth yrs when you will be doing your rotations....I think it would be nice to live in an enjoyable area for the first two years bc its not like youre gonna have much time for a social life after that

So did anybody find out when the fin aid package should be arriving?

I have no idea when the financial aid packages are coming but you can already start filling out all that financial aid info and apply for the loans. just check under financial aid on the website and all the directions are there for you.

Do I have to fill out the RFU financial aid stuff in addition to FAFSA to get a financial aid estimate packet?

Did anyone hear from dorm housing yet?

No I have not heard from housing, but the contract form is online.
Thanks Juliofly for letting me know about the finaid application. I guess we have to fill this out before we can get our finaid. I thought only the fafsa was required and they would make up the package like undergrad.

unfortunately i think it is the former. according to u.s. news, RF grads finish up with the most debt:

Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (IL) $167,827

The reason thats so high is because it factors in M4s who were once AP student, and thus, accumulated 5 years of debt instead of 4.

i interviewed in march and have not heard anything. do i have a shot of getting in? i really want to go there. i thought my two interviews went pretty good. PM me if you want my stats and junk. and pray for me. congrats to everyone!

i don't know... the write-up said that it only incorporated the m1 thru m4 debt.

I got my housing contract in the mail today; which means the lottery probably just got started. The fin-aid office has busy phones when I try to call. I'll find out eventually when stuff is supposed to come though!

I got my housing contract too. One bed apartment. YAy. Why do we have to send in a deposit so soon? April 24? I still have to decide if im going to RFU at all. Im going to chicago this weekend to have my own second look.

Hey,

How bad is the traffic on the interstate I-94? How long of a drive is it from RFU to some of the suburbs south of there?

I am also looking at places to live around Chicago, however want some feedback on nice areas to live.

Thanks.

traffic on 94 during rush hour can be completely hellish. but, you'll be lucky to be heading the opposite direction, so i don't think you'd find traffic too bad. even so, if you find a place in, say, Evanston, it'd probably take you at least 45 minutes to get to rfu, i'm guessing.

evanston might be a good place for you to look for a place to live. it's got a lot of good restaurants and the downtown area is very nice. it's also a but more affordable place to live than some of the other north suburbs (winnetka, glencoe, etc). in general, the north suburbs are pretty expensive to live in. best of luck finding a place.

I live in the north chicago area right now, and I'd strongly advise you NOT to live in the south suburbs. They've just started the Dan Ryan construction project (the dan ryan is what chicagoans call I-94 south of "The Loop") and it has subsequently made traffic a total disaster. The tri-state (the I-294 loop going around the city) might make it ok to go around(with 3-4 tolls too...), but you're looking at a 90 minute commute most days of the week. And that's one way. The farthest I'd go I have to agree with the previous poster, that being evanston. Or even downtown if you live in the north end of the city. I know a few people who do it now, but they tend to be the types who go to class 1-2x/week. You can also look west of here. Cheaper housing to be found in more central lake county, and its probably only a 30 minute drive, but it will put you just a bit further out of reach from the city proper.
