Can anybody give me a source to find physicians to shadow in San Francisco? I would really appreciate it....thanks...

anybody??

if you volunteer at San Francisco General ER for 100+ hours, then you are allowed to participate in a nice structured physician shadowing program.

Is the volunteering that is done for those 100 hours like cleaning, working in the gift shop boring useless volunteer stuff or something more meaningful and rewarding?

From what I understand, volunteers at SF General are cleaning guerneys, running specimens to the lab, getting blankets for patients, etc...

However, I am involved in a group based at Stanford called SCOPE (Shadowing and Clinical Opportunities for Pre-med Experience) in which we shadow ER physicians at several hospitals on the penninsula. No cleaning, no running specimens - just shadowing the docs for 8-10 hour shifts. It's a great organization and I recommend you check out their website for more info and how to apply. (Most of the students are from Stanford, but a large % are not - like me!) Go to: www.beagooddoctor.org and click on the link to SCOPE. Good Luck! 🙂

Sounds like an awesome program, I'll check it out. Is it difficult to get into the program. I viewed the website and it seems great. I guess I have to wait until I get my car fixed before I apply.

I've volunteered at the SFGH Emergency department and the work varies widely, depending most on what time your shift takes place. You do need to do grunt work such as cleaning gurneys, running labs and replacing empty oxygen tanks, BUT your primary role is as patient advocate. This means you talk with patients who look like they could be cheered up, facilitate communication between patients and their families and their doctors/nurses. If you're fluent in any other languages, you end up translating quite a bit because there's always a need with SF's large immigrant population. On top of this, if you're volunteering during busy shifts (typically at night), you will end up working with physicians helping them with lumbar punctures, putting splints on people badly broken in motorcycle accidents, even doing chest compressions while the other staff attend to more important things. So there is a large spectrum of things SFGH ER volunteers do. If you're new, though, you will more than likely get a boring shift. After you put in your time, however, you'll eventually get a better shift where you'll get some very interesting experience...

sounds like a fun program. how long do members serve on average? it would seem like theres a high turnover rate of applicants and members since the overall objective is to go study medicine. also, do interns stay within the same dept. or with the same physician throughout their time or is there a schedule rotation?

thanks for the informative post, orchid.

does anyone know if the sfgh er volunteer program still allows for doing a little actual patient care like compressions?
