Hello! I'm new to SDN and looking for some advice with refining my school list. I'm applying for the 2024-2025 cycle. I'm trying to apply super broadly since I know my GPA/MCAT isn't amazing. I will also be applying to DO schools as well but haven't made that list yet. Please let me know if there are any schools I should add or remove. I am applying pretty late in the cycle due to a poor initial MCAT score.

MI Resident/ORM Asian Male

MCAT:
1st Attempt - 498 (125,123,125,125)
2nd Attempt - 503 (125,126,125,127)

CGPA/sGPA: 3.98/3.97

ECs:

Clinical Volunteering
:
  • 300 hours volunteering with non-profit hospice for minority patients
  • 400 hours working for a Neuro Rehab Center
  • 150 hours volunteering for local hospice
Non-Clinical Volunteering:
  • 200 hours volunteering for Friendship Circle, a center for special needs children
  • 150 hours volunteering for Wheelchair Basketball
  • My brother has cerebral palsy, so my volunteering revolved around that.
Internship: I started a new major at my school that combines arts in health and humanities. I am a Religous Studies and Neuroscience Major.

Research
  • Research Assistant at School Chemistry Department (2,000 Hours) - 2 Publications in medium-impact journals
  • Research Assistant in Chronic Low Back Pain Study - 1 Publication in low-impact journal
  • Research Assistant for CREATE. A study that looks at how to expand interdisciplinary study to all students and creating improved curriculum - 1 Publication in medium-impact journal.
  • Side research with medical students in various specialty's - 4 Publications in low-impact journals
Leadership
  • Vice President of Pre-Health Professional Fraternity. Offered complementary BLS training. Also was approved to train students in "Stop the Bleed"
  • Treasurer in Student Emergency Response Team
Shadowing
  • 80 hours in various specialties. Received LOR from one physician.

Unfortunately due to my lower MCAT. This is my current school list. please let me know if I should add/delete anything. Thank you!

You need to make a DO list, and you have a good start from what I can see as a Michigan resident. I need details on your clinical and community service volunteering to set of you have enough for Rush.

That said, I have questions:
Wright State (don't they just take mostly Ohio residents?)
Arkansas (???)
Both WV schools (???)
Wisconsin (???)

You need DO schools. I don't know your mission fit for better confidence in your MD list.

Wright State, Marshall, West Virginia and Arkansas admit very few (if any ) non residents with your stats and no connection to the state.
You are also applying late for the MD cycle so more than half of all interview slots will have been filled before your secondaries are reviewed.
You could try these MD schools:
Central Michigan
Michigan State
Wayne State
Oakland Beaumont
Belmont
Medical College Wisconsin
Alice Walton (when it opens)
Roseman (when it opens)
You are competitive for many DO schools and I suggest these:
MSUCOM
MU-COM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
TUNCOM
UIWSOM
ACOM
WCU-COM
CUSOM
WVSOM
UP-KYCOM
VCOM (all schools)
PCOM (all schools)
LECOM (all schools)

Hello! Sorry for not telling the entire story. I actually have conditional acceptance to an Osteopathic Medical School (Not binding) as long as I reach a 500 MCAT, which I did reach. I am now looking to expand my choices by applying MD.

In terms of my story, it revolves around end of life care (hospice) especially in underprivileged areas of Michigan. I also have a lot of experience in advocacy and volunteering of vulnerable populations, such as special-needs children across the Metro-Detroit area. Finally, my main motto revolves around utilizing the power and knowledge of humanities in conjunction with scientific knowledge to create a more robust curriculum for hopeful physicians. Please let me know your thoughts on this! The reason I have chosen the WV schools and MSW are because of their MCAT score as well as their mission fit.

Whoa... jargon bomb! Could you explain the activities you were involved with that clarify this statement? Nothing in your description suggests a deep dive into humanities.

Underprivileged metro Detroit is very different from West Virginia or Dayton, so I don't see the mission fit with you.
