cGPA: 3.55 (3.9 fresh/3.8 soph/3.8junior/2.39senior) but did DIY Post Bacc 18 credits 3.9GPA high level biology classes (developmental, orgo 2, medical microbio, genetics, immunology while working full time 40hr clinical research job)

GPA is biggest cause for concern as my senior year science GPA of 1.69 which I completely tanked my GPA bc of my last semester bc I was exploring another career path and was unsure about Med school. I skipped exams in my classes due to immaturity. I plan on addressing this in my primary/secondaries if asked. Will take responsibility. Now I reallized I want to do Med and did a Post bacc, which was 1 year, 1st semester was 6 credits while working full time which was super busy for me. 2nd semester was 12 credits while working full time which was even more busy. high level biology classes (developmental, orgo 2, medical microbio, genetics, immunology while working full time 40hr clinical research job)

UG: Molecular Cellular Biology

Gap year: 2 year
Clinical Experience:

• 2100 hr as a Patient Care Tech/Nursing assistant at a academic hospital pacu units

Research:

• 4200hr clinical research coordinator at a academic cancer center (LOR from faculty mentor. 1 publication) (spent 2 gap years doing this)

Shadowing: 10 hr (internal medicine) + 30 hr (radiation oncology) = 40hr
Non-clinical Volunteering:

• 150 hr as a street outreach, eating breakfast with pt population affected by methadone abuse.

Leadership: Executive board for a graphic design unit of a club
Extracurricular: Just swim in my freetime

My biggest question is whether I am ruled out of any service heavy schools. I was interested in Rush Loyola George Washington UChicago EVMS VCU Drexel Temple Wayne State Oakland Beaumont Frank H Netter UCLA, but I heard these are all service heavy, as I only have 150 hrs I do not know if it is worth it to apply to the above.
My second question is whether there are any T20's that are reinvention friendly. Vanderbilt, washu, uchicago, nrothwesetern?

As a reinvention student, I am happy to get into MD or DO.

It would be nice to know what you took your senior year and your grades, vs. your postbac courses. I think you need to abandon the thought you are T20 material because I don't see your impact with your community from the description above; and the low senior year GPA doesn't help.

I don't think you have enough non-clinical service orientation for Rush. Describe what you have that qualifies for this category.

More importantly, how is this activity (both in topic and hours served) evidence of your purpose as a physician? Why does 150 hours override the thousands of hours of research or the 40 hours of shadowing? You lack a lot of campus involvement (okay you have 1 leadership position). How did your 150 hours result in efforts to learn more about patience with substance abuse disorders... or the homelessness problem?

And it helped me to see that there are a lot of people dealing with addiction and that it takes a lot of compassion to understand and see where they came from and how they developed the habits they have now. This makes me interested in helping vulnerable populations for a living and to do whatever I can to find a problem and solve it health wise for them! Unfortunately, I couldn't heal anything bc I was a volunteer and unknowledgable, but this fueled a desire to do that.

Ok, these are good questions to think about. So no Rush. We also did give them resources to housing and job help, that is of the main roles I forgot to mention. But will probably avoid Rush for now and get more hours.

Given what you disclosed, you will need to explain it. I agree saying you were considering a different career path can hurt your chances, but what is your explanation why you changed back? We don't have your timeline of activities to see how you tried to pivot and then turn back.

Look up secondary essay prompts that give you space to discuss difficulties shown on your transcript. You should work with your academic advisor or academic affairs office on a professional response. I can't promise your answer will quell any concerns about your academic preparation, but you should practice answering why you want to be a physician given that problematic semester.

Ok I will do this!

Basically I started working as a clinical research coordiantor under the oncology department the summer after graduating, and i watched my doctor in the clinic as mandatory part of the job, and realized I wanted to do what she did! Helping pts anxious w cancer diagnosis, helping problem solve to find a solution whether radiation or surgery, etc, and i really liked the pt pt interaction of how my doctor/boss calmed the pt.

after realizing this, i started enrolling in post bacc classes a year later and took the mcat as well to prepare to apply.
