Hi everybody--new girl here. I'm sorry if this has already been asked, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any schools that allow accepted applicants to finish pre-reqs the summer before matriculation. I think Cornell used to allow it, but now they want everything completed by that spring. Thank you!

Off the top of my head, I don't know of any. The schools I'm applying to want everything done by end of Spring term (CSU, Ohio, Wisconsin, UC-D, Oregon, WSU).

Note to self: have to change my acronym of schools from OW COW to COW COW because I added California.

I actually don't think any let you finish pre-reqs during the summer before matriculation. :/ How many pre-reqs do you have left to finish, and is there any chance to squeeze them in your schedule before end of spring term?

I'll be done with all the VMRCVM/Illinois/Tufts/Penn pre-reqs by this spring, but if I want to apply anywhere else I need to take genetics and micro as well. Oh well--IF I get in, I can at least spend the whole summer on a roofdeck with a margarita in my hands. Life is rough. 🙂

Florida specifies that you can take the two animal nutrition/care requirements in the summer before starting. But that is the only school I know of, and its only for those specific classes.

you used to be able to at UTK and I'm not sure if you still can. I took cell biology and biochem the summer before I started vet school. They let me know what I needed to take during the interview (and it was news to me that my biochem wouldn't be accepted). If you are applying here, you can always call Deborah Shepherd and ask (she's very helpful!).

I just found out that the biochem I am currently taking (which is sufficient for all my other schools) is not up to UTK's standards. It took them two weeks to get back to me about it and now the drop add course is already over and I am stuck. But this course is sufficient for my other colleges... its nice that they are lenient about taking it though, as in they would have told me if I am chosen for an interview... but I would rather know now! Glad to hear I am not the only one that ran into this problem. Deborah was great, really sympathetic and helpful! How do you like UTK!? Worth taking another biochem for?? Sorry didn't mean to shift gears here from the original post.
I think a majority of schools are for sure by the spring semester before matriculation. I have the VMCA book and can look it up if you want me to?

I honestly don't recall any schools letting you finish pre-req's the summer before. I remember in previous years that Western and somewhere else would let you have only 1 or 2 pre-req's that you could finish in the summer if you were accepted. Sorry. It sucks...I know.

Thanks everybody! I started out applying to four schools, but then I found out I wasn't eligible for Penn (they apparently don't count shelter medicine hours as vet experience, even if you're working for a shelter vet, assisting with surgeries, giving injections, etc!), and THEN I found out I wasn't eligible for Cornell....and before long I was down to ONE school. It's not like a had a real shot at any of the others, but still. I will definitely check out UK.

And that's awful about the biochemistry course! I try to think of these things as sacrifices to the vet school gods.

Penn. definitely ok
Tufts and CSU : may be wrong but I also recall they are ok with it. Check the VMSAR for "courses must be completed before matriculation"

Actually ended up taking a survey biochem course (principles of biochem or something like that) that met their standards at MTSU over the summer -after struggling to find something that worked. So it was a 6 week course (I think) and the professor was very reasonable. Made me actually like biochem, and I hated it the first time around. I didn't even take the final and managed to do very well in the class. It had a lab that met once or twice a week.

I like UTK. I know blackat hates to hear it, but you can start to get burned out on learning and vet school, but the 4th year has been amazing so far and I love school again. A lot of the faculty is great and willing to talk to students outside of class for whatever reason. Class sizes are still pretty small which I find as a positive. I will say that out of state tuition is ridiculous though (I'm in-state but I have many out-of-state friends that don't know what they'll do after vet school).

Always happy to answer any questions.🙂
