SGU c/o 2020 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats!! Wow that's SO soon! Good for you!

Yay congratz!!!!! That's so exciting!!!!! That must feel so relieving knowing that you will be a vet for sure!!!! And I feel like it will make future interviews less stressful because you know that even if you mess up, you'll still go to vet school!

How long after your interview did you get your acceptance? I've got my interview next week

I had my interview 11/1. Then I got that final determination email (spoiler alert, it's NOT the final determination so don't spaz out when you get it like we did) on 11/12 which basically said it was going into committee review, and then I got the acceptance email today. They do them in batches so the committee met last week. It sounds like maybe they meet once/month or so, so regardless of when your interview is, if it's in the same batch it'll be reviewed at the same time as someone who interviews 2 days before they meet. They told me in the final determination email it could take 4-6 weeks to hear, but it was only a week and a half.

Such a relief to know that I'm in... It's going to be a very memorable thanksgiving! congrats to you @njvet93!!

Has anyone heard anything about the Foundation Program? Has anyone heard of it being "waived" after an interview and being accepted into the DVM program instead? I've interviewed for SGU and was told about the Foundation program at first, but my interview invite was the same as the DVM ones. Thoughts?

Will anyone else be starting the Foundation Program for Jan 16?

What is the Foundation Program?

I'm super late to the game here, sorry guys! I'm finishing up FTV in about 2 weeks down here! If anyone has any questions feel free to ask, I know it was difficult to find information when I was first accepted into the program & had no clue what it was about.

Also, I did not apply directly to the FTV program, I applied for the DVM program and was "deferred"/accepted to FTV b/c my GPA wasn't stellar. From what I can tell the FTV program is for nontraditional students (e.g. lower GPAs, music majors, people who have been out of school for a few years, etc.) who are given a chance when they would've normally been rejected. It's a tough semester, but it's been a great opportunity for me that I am SO thankful for & I know those of us who make it are going to be so much more prepared than most of the Term 1 students we'll be starting with this January.

@mmehr3 i just interviewed for the foundation program but I'm still unsure about it. My email read like you cannot get a single C in any class, and after that and the comprehensive test you get *recommended* for semester 1, as in its not a sure thing you'll get in. What's the scoop on this?

So there are 3 requirements for moving on to Term 1. You can't get anything LESS than a C (i.e. you can get a C, just not a C-/D) in any class, unless they've changed their policy but I'm not aware that they have. Your cumulative GPA must be a 3.0+ for the term. You must pass a cumulative exam (25% of the questions are from each of your 4 main classes: Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biomedical Anatomy, and Animal Physiology) at the end of the term with a 70%. Basically, they're seeing if you can stand the rigor of DVM classes & know the important background information (that you should have gotten from undergrad & that you'll need for moving on to SVM). FTV students are generally very, very well prepared for Term 1 compared to students who start immediately in FTV (especially in Anatomy/Physio because they're basically the same class again w/ the same professors). If you make it through the semester & have all your requirements checked, you're guaranteed a seat in Term 1 SVM. It's been a hard & stressful term, but if you are going to make it through SVM, you'll be able to handle it.

Ok that helps clarify a ton. If I get in I'm going to have such a hard decision between FTV and Ross Vet Prep!!!

Well no one can tell you what is right for you, but all I can say is I was faced with the same decision a year ago & made my choice for a few reasons and I am SO happy I went with SGU. Good luck!

Doe anyone have any tips for a Skype interview?

Pick a neutral background. Place your computer on something a little bit higher than the table, so it's not awkwardly looking up at your chin. So, computer on top of text book on top of table. Make sure your sound is good, and your internet connection is reliable. Make sure you are in a quiet place - no pets running in, no people yelling in the background, etc. You can have notes in front of you to help, but don't look at them too much. Look into the camera instead of at the screen so you are actually looking at the person. Hmmm. I'm sure I'll think of more.

Cngratz @michelle D ! Can I ask when you had your interview? I had mine December 2nd and hoping that I hear back soon!

Got my interviewer's contact info, and it looks like I'll be doing a Skype interview January 7th! I'm not sure why the interview invite email made such a big deal about making sure they have your current address, because I'm in Missouri and my interviewer is on the east coast. 😵

Time zone differences maybe?

Congrats to all the accepted students! I was also accepted for the Fall 2016 school year and I'm super excited! To those currently interviewing good luck! The doctor who interviewed me was super chill and funny! He especially liked that I was up to date on not only medically relevant issues but also social issues regarding veterinary medicine as well.

Also, I think it generally does take between 4-6 weeks to hear back. I had my interview November 14th and didn't hear back until Dec. 17th even though I recieved a confirmation the day after my interview saying all the paperwork from my interviewer had been submitted.

Accepted to the Foundation Program for Fall 2016!!!! Time to research the hell out of SGU and figure out which to pick!

Can you elaborate on the Foundation Program? Do they offer you a seat in the program if your GPA is too low? What do you think that GPA cutoff is?

Just received my admission offer (12/22)! I interviewed on 10/6, so it was a bit of a wait. Just wanted to give a little hope for those who have been waiting a while!

For those of you who were accepted, what was your interview like? I just had mine for the foundation program and all of the questions that were asked were ones that I went over, but my interviewer would just say "okay" and move onto the next question. I'm very nervous now! I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing.

So I got accepted to K-State today, which means I'm fairly certain I wouldn't want to attend SGU anymore. However, I already have an interview scheduled for January 7th. Would it be more rude to cancel the interview on such short notice, when my interviewer agreed to take time out of her day off specifically for me, or to go through with the interview when I have no intentions of going there?

If it were me, I'd prefer someone cancel and be honest because my time is precious and limited. I'd be more annoyed to know I gave up part of my day than to have a hole in the schedule

Thanks for the input, I think I am going to go ahead and cancel. I feel a little flaky, but I did JUST get the acceptance yesterday. Imposter syndrome is making me paranoid that something will fall through with K-State and I'll have have no backup plan, but I know that's not at all likely. Good luck to everyone else still interviewing/waiting to hear something!

I cancelled with Ross a weekborbtwo before hand becsue I was accepted to SGU and wanted to go there more than Ross. They were understanding (bummed I didn't want them though). Congrats on your acceptance 🙂

Has anyone been accepted under the academic enhancement program? I'm not quite sure what it means exactly.

To those who got accepted, can you share your stats or PM me? I am planning on applying for the next cycle but I have a terrible GPA and would like to know if I should even bother applying this year or wait another year

Science/last 45 gpa: 3.9
Cumulative: 3.7
Quant: 158
Verbal: 161
Not really sure what my total hours of experience were: one SA clinic full time 1 summer as receptionist, shadowing a Mixed practice vet part time for a year and a half, worked on a small farm part time for 1 summer.
I wouldn't be discouraged though! I know plenty of people who have gotten in with lower GPAs!

I have heard that the school will pay for you to visit (once accepted I think) however, I can't seem to find at information again on the website. Does anyone know anything about that? And who to speak to in order to do that?

They will reimburse you only if you ultimately matriculate.

I just officially declined my admission offer for the Fall, so hopefully one of you lovelies will be taking my place! Best of luck everyone!

Congrats and good luck! I'm an SGU grad, so if anyone needs insight just let me know, happy to share!
