Should I send an update letter if my new GPA isn’t a 4.0?

Hey everyone,

I applied to 7 MD schools (submitted end of July through early September). So far, I’ve received one interview invite from one of my in-state schools. The other two in-state programs are strong mission fits for me, but I haven’t heard anything yet from them or my out-of-state schools.

I’m currently in a one-year Master of Medical Sciences program (700-level med school coursework) at one of the schools I applied to. My first summer semester GPA was 3.99, and my fall GPA will likely be around 3.8. My undergrad GPA was 3.64.

I’m wondering if it’s worth sending an update letter now. I’m debating because:

  • My GPA isn’t a perfect 4.0, and I’m not sure if sending a 3.8–3.99 update helps or hurts.
  • I also finalized a publication since submitting my applications (it was “pending” on some secondaries).
  • I haven’t added any new shadowing, volunteering, or leadership yet.
So the only real updates would be my current M.S. GPA and the finalized publication. Would it be better to send that now, or could it come off as unnecessary / even hurt me?

Schools I haven’t heard from:

  • Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)
  • University of South Carolina SOM Greenville
  • Rosalind Franklin / Chicago Med
  • Oakland Beaumont (OUWB)
  • Wayne State
  • Medical College of Wisconsin
