Program-Specific Info / Q's SJSU 2019-2020 MSOT Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I’m interested in applying but will not be able to apply until late Decemberbecause I haven’t take my GRE yet. Is there a chance if I do apply during that time? I know they’re deadline isn’t until March but I also know they’re rolling admission so I’m not sure if I should even apply.

There's always a chance, but I would say it's pretty slim. Since it is rolling admissions, as long as people qualify and their personal statement is good, they will get in. I have someone in my class who didn't get in for 2 years because he kept turning in his application in late November/early December. It wasn't because of his stats and PS, but because of when he turned in his app. Once he figured that out, he turned everything in on Oct 1 and got in.

So, unless there just happens to be people who don't qualify or those who receive an acceptance turn it down... it's a very slim chance. Not to discourage you or anything. It just so happens to be the timing for you isn't in your favor. If you're set on SJSU and don't get in this time, just remember to get OTCAS and CSU application and transcripts in by Oct 1!

Hi does anyone know when most acceptances roll out? CSUDH starts jan and is my second choice but I really want to stay close to home at SJSU. My app was timestamped OCT.1

According to a previous poster someone has already heard back, but it seems like the bulk of acceptances will be heard Dec - April!

hello everyone! Does anyone know that the personal statement is strictly limited to 500 words? I tried contacting their department but got no luck. On their website, it said the PS should be "limited to 500 words or one page". However one page single-spaced fits a lot more than 500 words... If anyone has a definitive answer on this, please let me know. Much love xo

I was accepted via email today! I am a reapplicant and I was accepted last year, so I'm guessing that's why I heard back so early. Last year I was accepted in March. I was sure to get my application in on October 1st. Best of luck to all of you!! Anyone else hear back yet? Would love to connect

Oh wow! Congratulations!!!! That's super exciting 🙂 If I may ask when did you apply last year that you heard back in March? My app got time stamped Oct 2nd and each day I'm nibbling my nails down further

Thank you! I also applied on October 1st last year, I turned my application in to the department in person. This year I mailed it in.

I'm guessing I heard back so early this year because I was a reapplicant.

I forget how OTCAS works. Is it uploaded as a PDF/docx or do you copy/paste it into a text box? Several of my classmates got in with over 500 words but less than 650-ish. I got in with just shy of 500 words. If it's a PDF/docx, I'd imagine it would be double-spaced, as that's the standard APA we use throughout the program.

Hi! I'm also apply to SJSU. Been to one info session but I also went to SJSU so I know a bit.
Still nerve wrecking though especially for my personal statement
Did you hear back from them yet?

When you're reapplying, do you reference the volunteer forms you sent in the previous cycle? Or did you have to go back and get your supervisors to fill out forms for the hours again? And congrats!

Thank you! Reapplying was pretty painless. I did have to contact my references who wrote my LOR because they were automatically sent an email from OTCAS prompting them to send their letters again and that was unnecessary. I did not have to do my volunteer sheets again. It seems SJSU keeps the entire applications on file. I was in touch with the graduate assistant and they sent me instructions for how to reapply.

Does anyone know the timeline of when we will know if we got in or not? I heard most people get notice of acceptance during Feb-March. So I was not sure about the waitlist or rejected individuals.

When you reapplied (having gotten in the previous year), did they tell you that you were basically guaranteed in? Or did you do additional things in preparation for this cycle's application (i.e. more hours, classes, etc.)?

I tried to defer and was not able to. They basically just told me to remember to reapply October 1st.

I saw in a previous forum that you took the SJSU Neuroanatomy course through SJSU, on the web sight it states it is online, however I have heard that the final is in-person? I think I may be in England when I am taking this course, would I have to schedule to be back to take it? Also, is there a student orientation that occurs before Fall starts? I'm not really sure when I should be coming back to the US haha I am from England and want to see family as long as possible 🙂

Thank you so much! Sorry if I loaded a bunch of questions on you

No worries. I took Neuroanatomy thru UCLA extension. That one is completely online with no need to meet in person at all. I didn't take the SJSU one but for sure you have to take the final in-person.

There is a student orientation for MSOT program. Some people have missed it. It's just general information. But it's a great time to meet your fellow classmates before the program begins and get a sense of the overall program. I believe that orientation is only a couple days before classes start and I'm guessing you'll want to figure out your housing and such before then!

I took the course last summer and there's actually an option for you to take the final elsewhere. You would just need to find a proctoring site and get it approved ahead of time. The final is also online - but you just have to take it in front of the professor. We all brought our laptops to the final and took it that way.

Just found out I was accepted. They sent the email a few days ago to a secondary email address that I had not used on OTCAS, but I'm glad I found it. Best of luck everyone.

Nice! Will you be attending SJSU or SMU?

Congrats! If I may ask when was your application submitted/time stamped and what are your stats? 🙂

Most likely SJSU, but I would like to visit before deciding.
Congrats, I applied there to but I figured I wouldn’t get in since my GRE score was 1 point below what they wanted

I've heard they send the bulk of their acceptances in March so hopefully you hear from them then. For some reason I just heard back from a bulk of schools on Jan 22, don't know if anyone else did.
I know of someone two years ago that got in with a GRE below the required so it seems they can bend their rules a bit.
Wishing the best of luck for you! Sending good vibes.

Thank you! I hope this means they are going through apps again and we hear soon! I unfortunately I did not turn it in until November 4th. 🙁

Thanks! I ended up emailing them a few weeks ago & they said since they get so many applications they won’t even look at the application if it doesn’t meet the requirement, but that gives me hope that you knew someone that got in with that

Just an FYI guys, I emailed Elaine and she said that we are most likely going to hear back anytime from now until end of April. If you don't hear back by then, email her.

I got my acceptance!! (and accepted)

Excited to meet those of you that also got in! Would love to connect as well. 🙂 Good luck everyone!

Congrats! Did you just get it today? Wanted to ask if you mind sharing your stats and when your app was timestamped?

Hey everyone!
I found this forum a few weeks ago but I never had the chance to post anything until now. I got the email on Monday that I got into the program! I saw a couple of other people posting their stats, so here are mine in case anyone was curious.

Time stamped for October 3rd

I have also worked as a swim coach for the past 7 years and have worked with many children on the spectrum during that time.

For everyone who has gotten in, congratulations! And for those of you who are still waiting, hang in there. I know it’s tough to not have an answer, but there are still a few months left in the acceptance period. Good luck!

Hi! I was accepted into the SJSU program and will be attending in the fall too. Is anyone else is planning to take neuroanatomy through UCLA extension this spring? I'm going to do it so I don't have to take the SJSU class over the summer, but I'm hoping it's not too difficult.

Congrats to everyone who has already been admitted and best of luck to those still waiting!

I got accepted today but will be declining since I'm currently in the CSUDH program. Congrats to all! I was surprised when I got this. Would have accepted if I new earlier but bet of luck to all!

Elaine will probably start it soon if it isn't created already. She'll probably send an email with the link.

Hi. I received my acceptance email Wednesday night!

Application time stamped: Oct 1st
Major: Biology
GPA: 3.77
GRE: 153V, 153Q, 4.5 AWA
Volunteer: 83 hours pediatric clinic, 30 hours inpatient/outpatient hospital

I applied last year and didn't get in. I was later contacted by the previous grad assistant and she informed me that my application was strong but the class was already full. So to anyone who finds out they have not gotten into the program, do consider that it might be due to the timestamp of your application rather than your qualifications.

Also, I got into USC last year and declined their offer when I got my financial aid and realized the cost was too high.

Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back!

Hi MrTL! I am planning to take the UCLA extension Neuroanatomy class this spring. I was wondering how was the course overall? I will also be taking human physiology and I am a little worried about the combined workload.

UCLAx was good. I didn't find it particularly hard. It's not super applicable to the program but just good background knowledge. Lots of self-study. My professor wasn't super helpful if you had a question and google helped out more lol. I think it was weekly discussion posts, quiz here and there, and a final research paper (5-8 pages, I believe). So nothing crazy. I was traveling abroad for half of the course and put 2-3 hours on one night per week to get assignments done. I'm also not a perfectionist and easily got an A, if that's any indication of the difficulty. Physiology would definitely be much more difficult than this course.

My cohort started a Slack group for this course (and for the rest of the program). It was helpful. I'd recommend that.

Thank you so much for your helpful response! Physio is definitely going to be a handful, but at least now I know Neuroanatomy will not be too difficult

Congratulations! May I asked when did you turn in your application last year? I’m a late applicant so I have very little hope 🙁

For everyone accepted or enrolled, do you mind explaining the financial aid/cost of attendance? Are you only offered loans? Can you pay tuition monthly?

I received my acceptance today! Not sure if I’ll be accepting my seat

Congrats! Do you mind sharing your stats and when you submitted your app? 🙂
Sure! I was time stamped October 10th
