Hi all! Has anyone else applied to St. Matthews this cycle? I was recently accepted and was wondering if anyone else has applied already/been accepted!

Make sure you look into the testing requirements necessary to be able to practice in the US! Since SMU is not accredited by the AVMA, there’s extra testing with an incredibly low pass rate that you have to take before you can take the NAVLE.

I can’t think of any currently active members who attend/have attended SMU and can give any firsthand accounts, but I agree with @SkiOtter. I recommend you do some research into the ECFVG and PAVE and their pass rates (there is some discussion about it in the foreign grad threads over in the Vet forum) and seriously consider if an unaccredited school is a worthwhile option for you or not.

Yes I looked into this already! I’m a NY resident and as long as I do my clinical year at an accredited school (which is what I would do anyway since they have clinical affiliations with some US schools) I can just take the NAVLE. I confirmed this information during my interview as well just to be safe [emoji4]

It’s a viable option in my case because of NY state laws. I think it’s the only state that lets you just take the NAVLE and practice in NY as long as you do clinics at an accredited school which happens anyway due to SMU’s clinical affiliations with US schools. I was just curious to see if anyone else was considering it!

It was conveyed to me that all students are given clinical placements at a US or Canadian school like how SGU and Ross do it. Also, SMU has a realllyyyyyyyy small class size in comparison to other schools (I was told the last class for the most recent term had 11 students!) so it shouldn’t be an issue to place at all in terms of competition (I could be wrong) I found some students on Instagram and spoke to them and they said that not every school that they are affiliated with has clinical spots at the time you apply for one. So, even though you will get a spot period, it may not be for the school of your top choice.

I think it’s because they have 3 start dates a year per class.
