I missed a call from a "No caller ID' number. No voice mail or number to call back. I had applied only to a few prelim surgery programs in Soap at the time of call. Can i contact the programs to inquire whether they called me or is it a match violation. Sorry if this question has been asked previously.
Yeah it is still going to be a violation unfortunately

AMG here. My second scramble. Nothing. Zero. Barely passed on my second attempt @ step 1, passed on first attempt @ CK with a 246. However, passed CS at 2nd attempt. Took a year off after graduating to regain my sanity. Barely passed Step 3 at first attempt during that year off.

Focused primarily on prelims. I shouldn't have used all 45 programs I think. What if the ones I applied to are filled when they refresh their list? I wouldn't be able to apply anywhere else.

Nobody deserves this kind of stress.

I've promised myself that if I don't get a spot, I'm done with medicine. Not sure what I'm going to do, but I will be done with medicine. It just isn't worth it anymore honestly.

I feel you , I am in somewhat similar situation as you are. I don't know your reason for saying you are done with medicine and I am not trying to convince you otherwise. All I want to say is NEVER GIVE UP HOPE...anything is possible

In theory I feel like it's technically a violation. I wouldn't touch it. The last thing you want to do is go head to head with the NRMP.

I really appreciate the encouragement. It's just that I feel we've gone through WAY too much to end up like this.

But then again, maybe I have a sense of entitlement? I don't know if I'm done with medicine. I'm just beyond frustrated honestly.

US DO. Feel confident about getting some kind of offer having spoken to 7 programs, but 2 of them are far and above more desirable than the others, 1 of which told me I was on their preference list. This program has multiple open positions, but I didn't get the feeling I was high enough on that list for a first round offer. I imagine one of the less desirable offers will come in the 1st round, and I guess my question is how likely is a program with multiple openings to fill all positions in the initial round? I probably sound ungrateful, but the gap between the desirability of this one and the others is massive

If it’s desirable for you, it’s likely desirable for others too. Don’t count on getting a chance in the second round if they don’t offer you in the first round.
Quick question regarding positions that are left available after SOAP finishes on Thursday. NRMP put out numbers last year of how many spots were available before SOAP and how many of those were filled during SOAP and subsequently how many were still available afterwards. I know we can just contact whoever we want at that point and try getting in. Take FM for example, there were 3 spots that were left unfilled after SOAP last year and if you check on FREIDA, there are exactly 3 FM PGY2 positions available for July 2018. Any thoughts on why these programs were left empty?

Likely because the program chose to not accept what they thought would be a problem resident (either for board scores, limitations with visas, something that came up in the interview, etc) over just having an empty spot. But it’s also possible that those positions were filled and the openings are in other programs, or different residents in those programs. There are several pgy2 positions available in Peds for July, but that doesn’t mean that they didn’t fill. We had one member of my class decide to change specialties after intern year, leaving us a gap in our pgy2 year.

US-IMG here. I know its really hard and i'm kinda in a similar situation like you, probably even worse considering i'm an IMG. But at the end of the day, your either going to make it or not. Don't be that person who gave up and never made it. Check out the IMG forum this year, you will see people with 2 attempts on the boards and graduated like 10 years ago matching in internal medicine.
PS: That person matched on the 4th try !

Would it be out of bounds to call them mid round and ask if they will be going to a 2nd round? Couldn't hurt right?

Do you have any thought about alternative plans such as PA or pharm school?

How many ways are people going to ask "May I contact the programs before they contact me?"

The answer is still the same. No.

I have seen at least one student get reported for this violation already.

This program already contacted me

Not entirely sure, but such calls were completely kosher during the old scramble. It's a big reason why I advised students to talk to their home program PD to see what they could or couldn't help you with.

True. And are now a MATCH VIOLATION in the new system. It will take some time for everyone to adjust, but don't put your participation in future matches at risk.

To be honest with you, I've been going through a lot of emotions for the last couple of days, so I haven't been thinking too much.

I do know that going to PA school is a pain in the a$$ for people like us. I remember reading about what the requirements were and I think we meet all all the academic crap they want us to do but I am not too sure about the other requirements like actual experience (although you'd think we've gone above and beyond). As for pharm school, I have quite a bit of friends actually that went that route and I can't begin to tell you how miserable they are - actually, let me correct that. The ones that are miserable are the ones who didn't do a one year residency. A lot of them ended up at places like walmart counting pills and babysitting pharm techs.

I'm down for any ideas. I think the only right decision I can think of that I've done lately is pass Step 3 so that I don't have to worry about that whole 7 year deadline thing. I've been wanting to research job opportunities where you'd need an M.D. but not a license. However, the only thing I've been coming up with is basically medical transcription, which absolutely blows.

Sorry! Once contact has been made, you can call them morning, noon and night. Not that it's a good idea, but it's legit fine.

Though is your home PD allowed to make a call on your behalf once the the program has made contact? Or is that a no-no too?

Yes, I'm apparently over-caffeinated. Not getting all the nuance in each post.

Once contact between student and program has been made, by the program, all contact is allowed. Not all programs are excited to have randoms calling, but it's all good per NRMP.

Good luck, everyone. I do not envy any of you. I cannot speak on behalf of my program, but I have heard we have some spots in SOAP this year. I hope they will go to you all. I am just glad to be almost out of this godforsaken program.

No calls yet.

its like everything crumbling right now.

I had depression and an almost fatal car crash I got through in med school and it looks like its worth nothing now

I am not sure if someone has asked this before but do all prelim general surgery positions reach out prior to making an offer? Some programs have like 18 spots open so I am just curious if they reach out to every single candidate they are interested in.

According to thread from previous years, some SOAPers got offer without being contacted.

Guys, its not over till the fat lady sings! (Thats what I keep telling myself) Match week is still in motion! Soap is still in motion! Lets be positive, I know its the hardest thing ever but hey at the end of the day it is not the end of the world. Our health and well being is super important especially if we want to become Physicians. Can't let this bring us down, it's just another annoying hurdle we have to overcome and we can!!!!!!!!!!! Much love, guys.

Not sure if this has been asked already. But....I am assuming all the offers will be available to be seen at 12:05 hence no new offers should be streaming in at 1 pm right?

theoretically yes. But due to website lag I have been advised to wait until 12:10 before accepting any offer in case another comes in later.

Sorry, the grammar was ambiguous in my post too... ugh. I'm not sure why I'm really diving into this today. This whole thing was years ago for me but still brings back all the feels.

All offers have been generated for the current round.
You do not have any offers for the current offer round.
The next round of offers will be sent at 3:00 PM March 14, 2018 EDT.
