Don’t give up folks! You never know how things will work out. It’s the uncertainty that sucks for the most part, but you will all end up doing something worthwhile and meaningful.
I applied derm back in 2011, 249 step I (was a great score then), 15 interviews, didn’t match. When i read that email it felt like I got smacked upside the head with a two by four. There was only one real legit derm spot left. That was when it was still the scramble. I called the program every day. I was in bed with the shades pulled for like 3 days.
I lost pretty much all hope. I still had my intern year spot. I called them asap and asked them to please give me a derm rotation early. I worked so hard and wasn’t going to give up regardless of how crappy I felt.
Fast forward to April and the derm program with the spot called me and offered me an interview. I went in May. The Thursday before Memorial day the PD/head called me and offered me the spot.
I gave my early rotation intern year in derm to a fellow intern who didnt match derm. She applied that year we were interns and got a derm spot.
We both went on to be chief residents. I got into the fellowship I wanted and have an awesome job with phenomenal colleagues.
My main current problem is whether I should adopt a cat or dog.
So the tl;dr is keep going. You’ve worked too hard. I know, I’ve been there.
