Do schools often have social events to go along with the interview days? If so, what are they like and how "casual" are they? I love meeting new people, putting on nice dresses, and wouldn't mind events with some classy drinks to get to know some of my fellow applicants. Maybe even bring a guy back to my hotel room or follow him to his place for the night? If there aren't typically structured events, how have people's experiences been with socializing with others at before/after interviews?

Haha, I’d say about a quarter of my interviews had some sort of social event. But it was basically a chance to talk to current medical students with other interviewees. There were no adult beverages though. Remember, even if it is casual, interviewing is a professional time and it is about conducting yourself in a professional manner. No matter what people say, from the second you step on the campus until the second you are off, you need to think as if you are being interviewed. I definitely don’t suggest trying to do anything crazy.

oh okay well i understand that i need to be professional when on campus or around current students/faculty in particular, but is it really taboo if i hit it off with someone and make arrangements on our own time to go out? as long as the interaction in the medical facilities is casual and nothing crazy?

Usually after my interviews, I was just mentally drained (they weren't that bad, mind you; I was also often several time zones away from home) and just wanted to veg out in my hotel and watch TV. I'm boring, I guess.

thanks but yeah i know, it's just that most of my exes have been the science/math types but i haven't come across many of them since i graduated (the guys in my lab are too old..) my focus is really the socializing because i really do like to just meet new people! i was just wondering what the prospects were for something extra and it seems like the chances are slim but i guess i will see

yes yes i know Kuchiki-sama would disapprove. but honestly i just think rukia never lived up to her full potential. she was never much of a shinigami anyway and there were so many cute boys for her to choose from! like ichigo (they're still my OTP tbh), renji, kaien, maybe even toshiro or grimmjow. grimmjow and rukia would be pretty hot, though it would cause byakuya to commit seppuku or something lol

From what I understand, there's this app. It's called Tinder. It let's you put in a little biography of what you're looking for (a nerd, a hookup). I've never used this app, so I personally cannot vouch for it.

If you're not, like 200 lbs, (LizzyM's your BMI should be lower than your MCAT), you should be successful with this app, particularly given your parameters.

ehhhh the guys on tinder are more interested in mirror selfies, their cars, or frat drinking activities. i've gotten a good number of matches but wow THEY are creepy! totally not my type and i like people better who have shared interests anyways. which is why i thought of interviews as a natural place

I think it's interesting that you care about the personalities of your hook ups!

Are you hoping for something more? I mean, I'm not someone who's into hooking up, but my friends who are tell me it's almost better if you find them douchey or whatever, just so you don't develop feelings.

But to get back to the topic at hand, you shouldn't be looking forward to your interviews because they're places to hook up with guys. The wording on some of what you said is just a little weird. Interviews should be exciting because they're a chance to see where you might go to medical school, and as a means to an end. Plus you get to meet/get to know faculty, staff, students, the area, etc.
 
Just use tinder while you're there or something if you're so thirsty. Keep away from professionals and flaunting your goodies For a one night stand at the Days Inn.

like say no to being inappropriate at the interview/waiting room or no altogether? can i not even ask people out to coffee for later on in the day?

I'd be mindful of that also.

I interviewed for some scholarship at SLU, and a girl at my lunch table was talking about how the night before the interview, she used a fake (this was prior to undergrad) to get into a club, where she hooked up with some guy.

The next morning, he was on her interview panel! I don't know if she got the scholarship or not.

My advice is to just hold it in for one weekend. You'll be fine, I promise.

oh, i really do, it makes such a difference! the douchier guys don't care at all about the girl, it's about their muscles, stamina (ahem), egos. but the nerdier types (not super nerdy, though) usually think they're lucky enough to get a date or dance and will actually try a little harder. my friends tell me they think it's because the guys think I'm a bit out of their league so they put in the effort. i won't be looking for anything serious until late medical school because i don't have the time to invest but i do love meeting new people

and i know! i love traveling and obviously i will focus on getting to know the school and local area and interviewing well but the people would also really excite me! i am planning on getting coffee/drinks with at least 2 other fellow applicants at every place i'm lucky enough to visit

that is scary...i will remember to keep it to my age range and avoid any med students in the area just to be safe! thanks for the warning
 
Interviews are the prime locations for scoping out a future hubby 😉 At no other point in your life will you be surrounded by so much talent (good genes). See Susan Patton for elaboration.

Seems like you've already made up your mind anyway, so there's no point in discussing it any further/giving advice.

Folks, when you see people come back here with 6IIs and no acceptances, and it scares you into thinking this process is a crapshoot, remember the tale of Byakuya, and console yourselves.

oh no 🙁 this has been really helpful and i am listening to everyone's advice! i mean i kinda knew that i shouldn't be doing anything crazy during the interview itself but as long as there's some interaction outside of the structured day, getting to know people beyond sitting in the waiting room and introducing ourselves with 20-second soundbites is a worthy goal. i may be a little thirsty at times but i have also made really good friends in similar ways and i think this is something premeds really need to do more! i only brought up the possibility of hooking up as an aside, i definitely won't be making any moves while there are faculty or students around haha!

i think susan patton is not wrong, just a little extreme and then unfortunately manipulated by the conservative media and got her message twisted. when you all graduate, you'll see how hard it is to find people who share similar interests, life goals, worldviews as you do. it's really hard! everyone is at bars looking for the midnight **** and they don't even do it that well. in med school especially, smart is definitely the new sexy!
 
I know of at least three couples that hooked up after my interviews. These were huge interview groups though (LECOM and Touro-NY), so somebody was bound to hit it off in a group of two dozen young, attractive, motivated people.

good to hear i'm not the only one who's thinking these things. did anyone in the administration find out and do you know if they turned out all okay?
 
You were in a sorority, weren't you.

btw this is just general advice- your ego comes across as really strong, and I'd tone it down for the interviews.
 
OH so is the consensus then that schools don't really put on any events during interviews? so if you want to meet people then you'll have to arrange it independently with them right?

Generalizations and stereotypes exist for a reason. Sororities and fraternities in general tend to have a strong meetup/ hookup culture. And I have no idea how this comment is sexist.

The hook ups? As okay as any one-off encounter could go. It's not like they all ran off and got married and accepted to the same school and lived happily ever after lol.

And they mostly hit it off while we were all alone in the rooms making small talk, or after the interview had concluded. There'll be downtime periods for mingling at most interviews- make the most of them if you're looking for some extra fun post-interview. Do not flirt in front of administration, ever.

oh everyone loves me in person. i think a lot of things can be lost in translation over the web! sorry, i had no intention of being mean but i just hate those kind of generalizations and the effect they have on women

Well, I don't really feel it as much since I'm a guy and I've been with my steady gf for a while now but you're right - you're never going to find such a high concentration of people who share so many common interests as you and, most importantly, are as intelligent as you (since you're at the same university). People criticize dating services like The League (which caters to Ivy Leaguers) for being elitist but it's really just people trying to find other people who interest them.
