Something I am confused about

I have tired to search Yahoo and different websites to answer this question, but I'm still a little confused. I thought maybe you guys could help. 🙂
Do most people finish a bachelor's degree in something before they start vet school? Or do they just finish the pre reqs and then apply without ever recieving a degree? This could make a big difference in the way both my boyfriend and I do this. 😀

Hi,

While it is more common for people to first get their bachelor's, then go to vet school, a bachelor's isn't required for admission. All you need are the pre-reqs.

Schools usually have two or three tracks. The guaranteed admission track, the no bac/ post bac track, and the bac track. You might want to go to www.aavmc.org for information about veterinary medicine, matriculation statistics, and specific application guidlines for your school of interest.

The stats that some schools post on their websites show that the majority of people get their bachelors before continuing on. My undergrad school (Tennessee) has a track where you do the pre-req's in your first three years, then your 4th year of undergrad is actually your 1st year of vet school. So when it's all said and done, you have a bachelors and a DVM, however, choosing that track does not guarantee admission into the vet school, so it is kind of a gamble.

I know that some veterinary schools, specifically Washington State, require you to have at least completed the requirements for a bachelor's degree prior to receiving your DVM. You do not necessarily need to have your bachelor's finished at the time of application or admission, but you need to have it done before your four years of vet school are done. I have known some vet students who have had to go back and take a humanities class during the summer in order to fulfill their undergrad degree.

In addition the mean age for most first year veterinary students ranges from 24-27 suggesting that most successful students have attained a bachelor's. 😉
