So I'm currently working up a list of residencies to apply to and was curious as to thoughts about residencies that have staffing required rotations? I feel like it could take away from other experiences but also think it *might* be an opportunity to really work hard on longitudinal projects as one could possibly get away with a 40h week. Or is it naive to think even during staffing you'd be doing 40h/wk?

I'm confused by your question. Are you asking about staffing months or longitudinal staffing. All PGY1s have a required amount of longitudinal staffing that is required.

Staffing months. Most programs don't have this, but a few do. I'm trying to cut my list down as I currently have too many programs :p

When you're staffing, you're staffing...all project work will be done before or after these hours. I've never had time to work on projects while staffing a regular shift.

I was implying that the staffing rotation would have the possibility of only requiring 40h/wk during that rotation. So perhaps one could have more time to work on projects outside of that rotation?

Probably. But for my PGY1, this was the very first rotation, and we didn't have really anything to work on until perhaps the very end of this month.

We had a staffing month in August, with 1 project day a week. It actually wasn't bad. It was 40h weeks and was split up for 2 weeks inpatient and 2 weeks outpatient module based (in our VA there are pharmacists in the different primary care areas where people can stop by after their appt and get counseling). I thought a whole month was a bit excessive, but I'm sure I'll wish at some point that I was back to 40h weeks and time to work on projects. I think a staffing month any later than August wouldn't be good.

Probably a staffing month fits in our program relatively well because our weekend staffing isn't actually true staffing (it's discharge planning, which can be insane especially if you have 16 discharges like I did today and many of their orders are wrong). Also, some of my project days were spent on meetings for IRB approval of my project as well as things I had to go to the pharmacy school for as a part of my teaching certificate.
