TCOM Class 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey everyone I just wanted to give you a head up for this coming semester's events TCOM is having a "spring fling" this semester, more detailed version of orientation for accepted students it is going to include tour, class info, real-estate agents helping us find a place to live, and possibly entertainment according to Ms. Holt. It will be on Saturday March 24th I thought I would tell you now so you can plan ahead, ask off for work and try and get your parents to go too. Good luck everyone on your last semester and look forward to seeing you in 2 months.

is it just like the fall except for the real estate agents???? or is their more info given???can't wait to get started, i;m actually excited about returning to school that is crazy........

give the admissions office a call and they will give you some more info thats all I could remember off the top of my head.

Freakin' awesome. I was wondering when the Spring Fling was going to be this year. See you guys there!!

P.S. czanetti - How/when did you find out about this? Did you get an e-mail, or did you call, etc.?

I called and asked about it. I had to find out so my parents could get off from work. Just call the toll free number and ask for misty Holt or ask about the spring fling and they will transfer you.

what are class times like? 9-5? and whats the grading scale like?

Spring Fling is basically a way to meet people before school starts, get a preview of what a class might be like, find housing (there is a housing fair on-campus or you can look on your own) and to ask all the questions you wanted to ask on your interview. At some point, you'll get something via snail mail (maybe email) to RSVP with an option to stay with a current student. It won't be included on the school's official list of functions, but you can count on a night out. It is a friendly campus, so you should come prepared to have a good time.

Hi, I'm OOS from Maryland and was accepted.

I was given a freshman and sophmore M1, M2 schedule when i went for my interview:

Tues
9am-5pm

Wednesday:
10am-3pm

Thursday:
9am-4pm

Friday:
8am-2pm

Year 2 also varies --- basically some days go from 8am-5pm some go from 9am-4pm, some 8am-3pm

I heard that attendance was only manditory for the labs
Hope this helps

I just noticed this...do we not have classes on Monday (which would be totally bad-ass), or was this a mistake? Just wondering...

Class schedules vary from week to week. Plan on having class every day particularly during the first 9 months.

We now have a TCOM 2011 facebook group so search it and join. Look foward to seeing everyone in march.

Ps. Congrads Kevin

Sorry to burst your bubble. We have class everyday and the hours varies from week to week. So plan on being in class at 8am on some days and some week the classes don't end until 5pm. Also, we had a make-up class last saturday because of snow, and we still had an exam the following monday morning a week ago. We also had make-up classes last thursday night and Friday night, and again we had our 2nd cardio exam today. So.... welcome to med school.

class of 2010

Sounds intimidating🙄😀

psshht...only if you let it be intimidating.😎

Sure, but not to the point of complete inebriation. A nice buzz is good, but I still value my ability to function...if that makes sense.

I'm not a big drinker but once in a while its cool to get a little buzz. I'm not really into getting sloshed don't see the point.

Do we have to confirm our attendance to spring fling?......or just show up? Whats the agenda look like or will they send us info? I havent really heard anything from TCOM since I officially accepted. Anyone know any info?

I'm sure that TCOM will send us stuff about the Spring Fling eventually. They're probably waiting until the match on Feb. 15 so that they'll have a list of all (or at least more) people to send the info to.

yeah they tend to send things last minute I got the letter for the fall meeting a few days before it actually occured 🙄

Thats why I thought I would call about the spring fling so I could get the date and put it on here so anyone could plan in advance. You should get it in march.

I called TCOM the other day. Leila from admissions told me that more info on the spring fling will be sent after the match (Feb. 15th)

My real estate agents, Kendall Rojas and MJ Henley, were great. Here's a link to their website. http://www.virginiacook.com/agents/view_profile.cfm?printout=1&prof_id=688

I got a lovely condo close to campus. If you want to buy, you should look into condos or townhomes, because the houses near campus were all built in the 1930s, so they have no garage and only one bathroom. Plus, they are REALLY expensive. There are some nice affordable houses but you need to look a little farther away, about a 15 or 20 minute drive from school.
Spots to avoid - Como (unless you own an AK-47). Generally close to school is a nicer area. Stay west of I-35.

I was not able to go to much of Spring Fling in my year, just a small part of the second day. It didn't set me back any. I must have missed any interesting stuff that may have happened.

I suggest that if you are looking for an apartment, that you get one close to school, since you will be so busy that a commute will waste too much time.

Here are some close apartments. I can't tell you much about most of them personally:

1015 University Dr # 100

Dorothy Lane Apartments
908 Dorothy Ln
Fort Worth, TX 76107

I looked at Dorothy Lane apts. They are rather old ("charming" but would go up in smoke if a fire started, and poorly insulated), small efficiencies and one bedrooms made from old houses that were divided up. The lady who runs them is really nice and will accept pets. She also has a few duplexes. No parking except in the street. These are within a block of the school.

nice apartment listings with phone numbers.

AMLI 7th street - very nice but expensive. Nice gym and pool. right across the street from a Target store.

I'll go out and look at the apartments near where I live - they are in a nice area but aren't internet-searchable. I'll get back with more info.

Good luck!

Hopefully I can join you guys in 4 days.

I am in upstate NY right now finishing my undergrad... I can't stand this weather any more someone save me. We had a white out a few days ago for those of you who don't know what this is... it means that its snowing so much and the wind is so violent that if you walked outside you wouldn't be able to see anything in front of you. Well I suppose this is nothing compared to what I heard about Dallas/Fort Worth area. According to the science channel it is the worst place in the world for twisters. They said that in the near future they expect this area to get somthing called a super tornado which they dedicated the hole show to describing the carnige that would come about by such a massive tornado hitting dallas/fort worth. Well I'm happy I'm going from the snow blizzard wonderland of upstate New York to the Tornado breeding ground of Dallas/Fort Worth. 🙄

Meh, take it with a grain of salt. Sure, Dallas/Fort Worth is in "Tornado Alley" which spans from north Texas straight up the country, but I've never heard of a tornado ripping through downtown Dallas or Fort Worth. I think we'll be alright.

Actually a tornado ripped through Ft worth just some 5 years ago, it was pretty crazy. I'm from north Dallas and we've had a few touch down and do some real damage.

yeah that was part of my tour that my aunt gave me when I went down there for the interview she lives in dallas and she showed me the bank one sky skraper building that was wrecked by a tornado in Fort Worth pretty close to the school

http://www.dallassky.com/fwtornado.htm

that explains why the cost of living is so cheap hehe

Damn...I guess I stand corrected. That kinda' sucks...I'd just never heard of a tornado wreck-shopping on a large, urban, downtown-like area with large buildings and what-not, ya know?

This thread may gain new members after midnight tonight😀

Does anyone know where we would need to go to buy a TCOM T-shirt or sweatshirt.... apparel. I looked everywhere online and can't find anything. I want to get one for my mom. Thanks

The gift shop on campus sells them. I suppose you could order one by telephone. Just call the school and ask for the gift shop.

The MS I class just sold some great looking fleece jackets with the UNTHSC / TCOM logo on them. I bought one from them.

You could also try calling Rynn Sloan or Misty, in the student affairs office. Their pretty good at this kind of thing, so they should be able to help you.

It sounds like you all waiting for midnight tonight!! I remember that wait.

Good luck to everyone.

WHOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I MATCHED TCOM!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even though I already accepted their offer back in November.😀

Anyone else care to join us?

Anyone?

*cricket cricket*

Hey everyone!

I matched to TCOM... I was offered prematch.

Reading the Texas match thread there should be some more people headed here. At least for now.

I did rank others above TCOM, but I had a tough time ranking. I fell in love with TCOM when I interviewed and will be extremely happy there.

I mean really.... who gets laptops and PDAs.... great views from a library they can order PIZZA too.... awesome flat screens in the gross lab...

I'm kinda glad it happened this way. If I get an offer off a waitlist, at least I can consider my options before just being pulled from the lower ranked.

I love you guys!!!

Hey I know being an OSS messes things up but I checked my match thing and it still doesn't say anything. I was sent an acceptance letter in october and mailed in my contract stating I will be entering this year but why didn't TCOM come up on my match... its the only TX school I applied to. 🙄

Not sure if you're actually concerned about it, so if you are, don't worry about it. So long as your HSC portal page is still the same, then they know you're coming.

Ok... now that the match is over... let's start getting some paper info!!

I'm ready to start filling things out, getting organized, getting excited....

And hopefully our thread will start expanding a little 😎 Where is everyone?

Does anyone know of any forums from last years TCOM waitlist? The likeliness of it moving? Anyone who interviewed in november, waitlisted during match and got in? Anything?

A quick question.... if anyone knows....

Do we get a course syllabus of notes for each class like they do at UTMB and UTSA?

There are some really nice lofts and apartments just down the street from TCOM.

Firestone Upper Westside (Good if you are single): http://www.lincolnapts.com/communit...muID=568&pageSubNavigationID=FeaturesServices

Also search for Houston House (Fort Worth, big old building converted to lofts, 5 mins from school) and the Electric Building. There are also tons of houses for sale in the surrounding areas.

Rent: From $600++ (1 bedroom), $1000 (house to rent, 2-3 bedrooms)
Buy: 3 bedroom from 80,000 (needs work) to 150,000++(really nice, for a student)
Utilities: Electric is a freaking rip off and the summers will kill you but DSL, cable, etc. are reasonable.

Hi Snowkhat,

Do you have websites for the last two, Houston House and Electric Building, I can't find anything about them online in terms of descriptions etc.

It will move. How much? Varies year to year, but, if i had to guess, there may be less movment than in previous years. Sorry to be discouraging, *but* the idea of the new match process is that more people (and schools) get their first choice earlier. That said, the last person to get in my class got the call on the first day of orientation.

If you are serious about TCOM, send them a letter (not email) expressing your interest and availability. Will it help? Maybe, maybe not. But it certainly won't hurt.

A few courses will have material in the syllabus, but most will not. Don't worry. There are plenty of notes from previous classes and the professors post their ppts. You'll be fine.

What up everyone!!! Looks like I will be joining you guys for next year. I cannot wait to get started. Where is everyone thinking about living? I think we are going to have an awesome time. When are you guys thinking about moving up to Fort Worth??

I will be moving in some time in June, I have no idea where I'm living yet I will have that resolved after spring fling, trying to find somthing walking distance from the school.

Hey, this is turning into a real thread! Like, one that people post on!😀
