TCOM Class 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What up everyone!!! Looks like I will be joining you guys for next year. I cannot wait to get started. Where is everyone thinking about living? I think we are going to have an awesome time. When are you guys thinking about moving up to Fort Worth??

Hey join the facebook group.... TCOM 2011....

I will probably move up around July 1st. I am going to keep working through June. Since nurses make good money (which I am 😀 ) I am going to work as much overtime as I can from now until then to hopefully rid myself of some of the debt I'll be in when I have to pay med school bills. I figure 23 days till orientation starts is enough to get settled 🙂

Does any one here actually live in or near Fort Worth area and could give some of us that live no where near it an idea of what there is to do, some of the hot spots and so forth?

I don't live there, but from what I remember from my interview, they have a pretty bitchin' museum district close by (if you're in to that kind of thing). Like, you can see it by looking out of the windows in any of the buildings on the campus. Other than that...gonna' have to hear it from the locals.

OK cool stuff to do?

1. Museums: Modern Art Museum, The Kimbell, the Amon Carter (Western), Cowgirl Hall of Fame, and The Science Museum.

2. Fort Worth Zoo (one of the best in the country)

3. Fort Worth Botanical Gardens (includes cool Japanese Gardens)

4. Sundance Square and Stockyards National Historic District (Good restaurants and bars)

5. Six Flags & Hurricane Harbor (Arlington--soon to be home of largest domed stadium in the world and Texas Rangers)

6. Dallas: Deep Ellum, Lower Greenville, West End, and Addisson.

7. Shopping: Galleria Dallas, Northpark Dallas, Shops at Willowbend--Plano, Ikea--Plano, Allen Premium Outlets--Allen, Hulen Mall--Fort Worth, Southlake Town Center--Southlake, The Parks Mall-Arlington

8. Groceries: World Market and Central Market are really cool, other than that we have Albertson's, Tom Thumb, Kroger, etc..

9. Games (Arcade, laser tag, pool, bowling): Main Event, Dave and Busters (21 and up)--Dallas, Speedzone (go kart and drag racing)--Dallas, Gameworks (simulators, DDR, karaoke, booze) --Grapevine Mills Mall

Where to live? Um, there are cool places to rent around the school. Mostly one bedroom efficiencies or large very costly houses. Good if you only want a small one bedroom. Within a mile radius there are a couple really nice complexes (pricey but super convenient). I just got a house (to rent) from www.michaelbrady.com (realtor). They have some good deals and they seem really laid back (I totally appreciate that!).

Anyway, maybe we could all meet up during Spring Fling and some of us can show you out of towners around.

Any questions pm me.

Did I hear LASER TAG!!!! Ok we need to do something like this one night during orientation before we head out to the bars!!!

Laser Tag is cool... paintball is too 🙂

Congrats to all the new acceptees!

Have any of you received any paperwork/e-mails from TCOM since the match?

Have any of you received any paperwork/e-mails from TCOM since the match?

I was accepted in November, but I didn't get anything in the mail for about a week after I found out. So if you didn't have a pre-match offer (from November) but got accepted on the 15th, then I'd give it about a week or so before you can expect something in the mail.

Actually I did get a pre-match offer, but I haven't heard anything since going to that school function they had this fall/winter (Meet and Greet?). Just curious as to when we can expect to hear something further.

Soon very soon🙂

It will move. How much? Varies year to year, but, if i had to guess, there may be less movment than in previous years. Sorry to be discouraging, *but* the idea of the new match process is that more people (and schools) get their first choice earlier. That said, the last person to get in my class got the call on the first day of orientation.

If you are serious about TCOM, send them a letter (not email) expressing your interest and availability. Will it help? Maybe, maybe not. But it certainly won't hurt.

Thanks alot... I think i will take ur advice and write them a letter.... 😳

Is there any OSS that are considering differing a year?

hello everyone. I'm getting excited the more and more I learn about TCOM.

Do we need to put in a deposit or anything right now? I haven't even started financial aid applications. Am I behind?

Look foward to meeting you all!

Hey rowdy,

I don't think you are behind with financial aid info being completed. I am filling mine out currently, but I haven't finished. I need to talk to my parents and get all the parental info...

In terms of a deposit, I haven't heard anything yet, but I don't think anything has been required.

Otherwise... welcome! Join our facebook group... TCOM 2011.... 😉

Not sure about financial aid stuff, but TCOM doesn't have a deposit.🙂

Hey, if you "newbies" are around tomorrow, I'm sure you could attend this. We got this email this morning, and the speaker sounds pretty good.

There is a rare opportunity tomorrow night to hear one of our country's experts speak.

David Fishman, M.D., is the keynote speaker for the Distinguished Speaker presentation here on campus tomorrow, Feb. 22 in Luibel Hall.

Registration for the event will begin at 4:30 p.m., with welcome and introductions at 5 p.m.
Dr. Fishman’s presentation will begin at 5:15 p.m., with a panel discussion to follow.
A reception will immediately follow in the Atrium of the Education and Administration building.

Dr. Fishman will present “The Detection of Early Stage Ovarian Cancer.” He is director of gynecologic oncology and the
Cancer Detection and Screening Program at the New York University School of Medicine and Cancer Institute.

Ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in approximately 21,000 women this year in the U.S. Early detection and treatment
of this disease can raise five-year survival rates from 20-30 percent in patients diagnosed at an advanced stage of cancer, to
a 90 percent cure rate when patients receive treatment while the cancer is confined to the ovary.

This presentation will provide the latest information about detecting early stage ovarian cancer — contrary to conventional wisdom
that symptoms of ovarian cancer may not present until later stages of growth — with the goal of improving detection rates, early treatment
and limiting long-term effects in patients with the disease.

I know that you all are busy with your studies, but if you can possibly make this presentation, it will be well worth your time.

Does anyone know of any international opportunities as students at TCOM?

This is the answer I got from an MII student that was on the admissions committee when I went for my interview: (email)

I don't know all the details, but there are ways to spend time in other
countries during your third and 4th years. During 3rd year you are
allowed one month, one elective rotation, that you can go anywhere. For
example, I'm looking into a program down in Costa Rica to take Spanish
as my elective. 4th year you can go anywhere for your rotations, since
they are all electives and you choose your own. There are many programs
outside of the US, including Africa, Asia, Europe, etc. Also, a group
on camups, the Christian Medical Association, goes down to Puebla,
Mexico every spring break (we get a week off for that) to work in the
clinics down there.
I hope this helped. I'm sure admissions can answer more specifics about
this going out of the country if you still have questions.

MSII

Theres a group of students and facutly that goe to Kenya. One of my third year friends is planning on going there this November or December. Weve had a couple of presentations on it.

Some of the 4th years have gone to Mexico and Central America.

Does anyone know how to get involved in on campus research? I thought i remembered something about an Alzheimer's project?

I received my "Spring Fling" letter in the mail today. I'm curious how it will be different from the Fall Preview day aside from the Real Estate portion of the day. Anyone know?

Does anyone know anything about the PDA and laptops that are issued to students?

From what I understand, the class that started this past fall was provided with the gateway tablet pc. I am assuming our class will receive the same computer. If you go to TCOM's website and go to the new students page...i think you have to click the resources tab along the top first...it will give you more detailed info about the computer requirements.

As far as the pda...i have no idea if they are provided or if students must purchase on their own. but from what i know, the pda won't be necessary until third year when clinicals start. but i could be wrong.

I was at the fall preview day and thought it was very informative, and I will be attending the spring preview day and I am guessing it will be a little more helpful since the people attending are actual future classmates as opposed to the fall preview which also included people who might have decided to go to another school.

Oh and by the way I currently go to school in the metroplex so if anyone wants to know the names of a few nice apartment complexes for advanced research let me know.

Anyone know if TCOM requires parental info on the FAFSA?

it is not required and it will only help you if your family (parents) are in poverty for you to get assistance in essance you don't need it, I spoke to the financial office about it.

Is any one else bringing there parents to Spring Fest???

I might be going to the Spring Fling solo if my wife isn't feeling well after her shoulder surgery.

I'm also trying to decide who I should bring. My mom really wants to go but I don't want to be the only one with a parent. Plus, I'm a pretty independent person, I'd kind of rather be on my own to meet people.
any thoughts?

I'm pretty sure I'm going by myself. I think it'd be easier to meet people that way...

Don't be concerned about meeting people. This might be the only chance that your parents have to check out your medical school. My parents are comming because I want them to see what its all about. I'm pretty outgoing I don't think my parents being present will prevent me from going up to everyone and saying hi. Just a few more weeks left look foward to meeting everyone.

There will be many students at spring fling with their parents, but if you don't want to bring your family this time they will have another chance to check out the school at family day during orientation week.

This thread died pretty quickly...

Does anybody know the dress code for Spring FLing?😕

good question I was going to call and ask tomorrow, there are basketball tournaments, concerts and other fun stuff going on that day so if you do dress up nice bring a change of clothes.

Though everyone wants to look their best, remember: you're done interviewing, you're already in, you're not trying to impress them with your Sunday's Best anymore!😀 I plan on dressing nice, but comfortable.

Hi 2011ers...

I was curious and came upon yalls forum here. Let me know if you have any questions... I love to help!

🙂

PS. Some things I noticed...
- Spring Fling is casual... no need to dress to impress...
- Don't stress too much about housing if you are coming to Spring Fling. The housing fair is great!
- We have no set class schedule... It varies from week to week with M, W and/or F afternoons for lab, T afternoons for OMM, and Th afternoons for Clinical Medicine being the only really set things.
- Our class will be selling plenty of TCOM paraphernalia at Spring Fling and orientation including fleeces, t-shirts, and car decals...
- For those wondering about whether to bring parents: Last year some did and some didn't. I brought mine to Ft Worth but then didn't have them attend everything with me. They helped me with housing and attended the things they were interested in, and then did their own stuff the rest of the day...

For those on the TCOM waitlist, has anyone heard of some sort of timetable on the movement of the waitlist? Thanks.

i had a couple of questions:

2) what does Clinical Medicine consist of? is that just learning about taking histories, physical, etc.?

thanks

Did you have any "summer reading" before 1st year started? It was mentioned in the e-mail about the online chat next Monday. I don't want to have to study over the summer before med school!! 😱

The current MSI class had to read the first chapter of Robbins (our pathology book) this year by the time they started, or during the orientation week. It started this year, our class did not have to do that (I'm a second year and the curriclum has changed).

Welcome to TCOM!! You;ll really love it here. I think our match results are supposed to be out tomorrow, and it will be interesting to see how our 4th years did. I have some 4th year friends who are anxiously waiting for noon tomorrow.

Hi future TCOM students. I know you guys will be new there. But I'm wondering if there's any local people that know about Plaza Medical Center and its residency program and how is the hospital environment, and people there in general. I am from out of state, and just want to get an idea about Plaza Medical Center and Fort Worth in general. If you know anything, please reply back ASAP. =) Thanks!

Could anyone tell me what most students do for health insurance? Can you get it through the school?

Anyone know anything about the 3rd and 4th year rotations? this seems to be the weakest part about many DO schools because there isn't an attached hospital to the school

Anyone know if there will be access to the online chat after it's over? I can't make it that night because of work, but I'd like to read through all that's talked about.

Good question, Id like to know the answer to that one as well...I guess thats what the online chat is for, but still...

what does lab consist of?

Gross Anatomy lab. we're in groups of 4-5 per tank. we switch cadavers after every course, so my lab group had one body for musculoskeletal stuff, then another for neuro, etc. yall wont start lab till about 6 wks in after ur done with cell science.

what does Clinical Medicine consist of? is that just learning about taking histories, physical, etc.?

thats pretty much it for Clin Med. learning how to use ur equipment (dont worry about buying this before orientation), learning how to do a physical, history taking, etc. theres also an ethics component, community service requirement and preceptorship requirement.

Did you have any "summer reading" before 1st year started?

we had a lot of summer reading, but then we got to orientation and i felt like the only dork that had actually done it. the only thing we were really expected to be accountable for was the chapter we had to read from the pathology book. and even then, i didnt remember anything i had read over break and i had to reread it anyway for the quiz. i guess my point is don't stress about any summer stuff they give you, but it's probably safe to do it just in case they change things.

Could anyone tell me what most students do for health insurance? Can you get it through the school?

the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) offers really cruddy insurance from what i hear, but it'll take care of the requirement. i believe theres a link somewhere on the website with more info. i'd ask about this when yall have the online chat, i personally am still able to use my parents insurance so it's not something i'm really familiar with.

Anyone know anything about the 3rd and 4th year rotations?

not too clear on this, since i'm still a 1st yr. but i know that is one of the biggest drawbacks about tcom. 3rd and 4th yrs end up sent to a variety of places, most in ft worth, but some in corpus christi and tyler, tx. like any school u have flexibility with elective rotations so you could even do those out of the country if u wanted. good news is that for the next couple years there will be a new DO school open every yr, which means more more options.

Anyone know if there will be access to the online chat after it's over?
last yr, a chat transcript was sent out.

hope this helps! now back to the books... 🙁

Do NOT worry about 3rd and 4th year rotations. For now concentrate on getting through years one and two (and step one). But, to ease your minds, TCOM has plentiful and quality rotations. EVERY school sends some students to away sites in the 3rd year. IF you get sent, the school provides housing while you are there. In the 4th year, you don't get 'sent' anywhere. You set up your own rotations where you want them - in Fort Worth, New York, Africa, etc. The increase in DO schools will, hopefully, increase the number of osteopathic residencies, but has nothing to do with "options" for core rotations.

In the 3rd year you will have the *option* of moving to Corpus Christi for all of the core rotations and you can stay there for some or all of your 4th year electives.

Still not convinced? Check out the match list in the osteopathic forum. It is a great list, because TCOM trains great doctors.

Yeah, they said the transcript will be sent to us if we registered our e-mail address before we entered the chat.

Did anyone manage to get a copy of the chat transcript from today's live Q&A? If so, would you mind sending me a copy? I was unable to make it to the session because of exams. Thanks.
