1. San Antonio - -- good distance away from home, close to Austin 🙂 so atleast there is something to do over the weekend if a break is needed. Also, love the computer curriculum 🙂
2. Houston --- I live in houston. And if I was to go to Houston, I would be tempted to come home more often... haha. But otherwise, I wouldn't mind it
3. Baylor --- too far from home...
For right now, I really have no idea. It is going to be a matter of visiting the schools, checking out the curriculum and what not... 🙂

This is tough. They all have pros and cons...
It would be interesting for current students at each school to weigh in their .02 cents. Pre-dental students tend to make sweeping generalizations that are usually wrong, inaccurate, or base judgments on factors that really don't matter once your a student.
Like Austin being near to SA 😛
Jk, good luck at your interview icedspice.

Right now I'd have to say Baylor because it's close to home and they have a mentor program where a DS from the class above you helps you out. (At least I've read on here they have that). At the end of the day though it's going to depend on where I get accepted and what schools I'm impressed with at the interviews.

I'm really hoping to get into Baylor as well, but I'm out of state so it'll be tough. I figure though, if they take ~5-10 students out of state, I should have just about as good a shot as any of the other out of staters.
Houston is about to build a brand-new school at the end of this year or early next year, guys! It is very likely that you all are going to be the second class to graduate from the new school!! What is better than spending 3rd and 4th years in spanking new clinic at a top-notch school, right? 😀 😛

If my choice came down to Houston and San Antonio, that would be the difference maker I think.
Why is San Antonio allegedly so highly ranked in the nation? What criteria do they use to rank schools anyway?
IMO, research!

Yup, that is correct. It's all boils down to research/grants. Plus, even if the rankings were done on other criteria, it is seriously outdated.
If it boils down to researh and grants, then SA would definitely have fallen from one of the top programs in the nation since the last ranking in 1993. Back then, SA was consistently considered the a top research school along side Iowa and North Carolina. Since then, SA has lost a huge amount of their funding. They are no longer one of the big money schools as they once were. Houston - they still cannot compete if you are only comparing research and funding. Houston just doesn't have the facilities to handle a lot of research. But, that will dramatically change once the new dental school opens as they will have access to a very large research facility and wil be able to take on much large and more intricate research projects. As long as funding can be obtained, Houston has the potential to overtake SA in regards to research once the new school and research center opens.
The thing is that you cannot compare schools. That is why the ADA and the dental schools chose to not give out info that would be used to 'Rank' the schools. Each school has its plusses and minuses which may attract some and repell others. Realistically, it doesn't matter which school you go to as long as the school is accredited (which all are) and you are able to come out of the school a competent dentist.

Exactly, especially in a 'ranking' that is oversimplified. In any case, as pointed before, all 3 texas schools are considered to be excellent. We are lucky.

I have roamed SDN looking at threads on comparisons between the 3 Texas dental schools, but would like to get updates on previous opinions. I was just accepted into Baylor and UT Houston and am having a extremely hard time deciding where I want to go. I asked tons of questions at my interviews and have researched a lot of information from the schools, but how do you all think the new building is going to change UTDB? I mainly care about the clinical experience that the dental school provides so that is what I am focusing on. The consensus for Baylor is that it has a top-notch clinical education and requires more procedures to be completed for graduation. However, with the new building for UT Houston opening up in summer 2012 they will have brand new clinics, curriculum and program changes, and more integrated clinical education with their virtual patient database/case study implementation. The 2nd year sim lab at Baylor was pretty impressive, an I am assuming UT Houston's 2nd year sim lab will be similar in the new building? Even though I didn't get an interview and will not be attending UT San Antonio, I would like to compare it to the other two schools as well.
