I want some love from Texas schools!!! I got emails from A&M and UTSW thanking me for submitting my secondary apps. Anna, I thought I read somewhere you were saying that our HPAC letters aren't going to be in til Aug this year? So does that mean that we get no love from schools who require letters of rec to be in before sending invites?

I just want to get in somewhere (although preferably Baylor, UTSW, or A&M...)! I'm so jealous of all of you who already have invites! Oh well, I am currently in Canada where it's in the middle 70s for highs instead of 106 when I left Texas.

Feeling increasingly paranoid. :scared: :scared:
Unfortunately I don't have the honor of working with OPSA - I'm class of 2004 so I'm doing my post-bacc at another university (they're the ones with the long delay). Usually TAMU is pretty good about letters (or so I hear) I think John and Beadle are complete.

Yeah, I correct myself. I posted that and thought that I should recheck TMDSAS for any changes and it says it was submitted 7/17! Woot. My freaking AMCAS application still isn't verified and I submitted 6/15. What the hell is taking so long???

So if we have the HPAC letter, it won't show up below with the individual profs names and that their letters have been submitted, right?

Hey guys just thought I would disprove ur math...I would have a 758 as my score...I already have an interview at those places...dont think that is necessarilly how they decide

Well, it was a good working hypothesis at any rate. I'm looking for anything that makes this process look like something scientific. Or at least rational. 😉

Dang that's low for TAMU!

So how do you calculate out your score for A&M? It doesn't seem like it would be as easy as your avg MCAT/15*500 + Your GPA/4.0*500

I get 845 with that, so that seems to fit the pattern....

Heard from TAMU today for an interview invite on the 10th of August. 😀 Anyone else going to be there?

Yup. Look for the old guy in the crowd.
Jota: You know there's a hotel in the memorial student center on A&M's campus right? It's cheap (if I remember right - like 30 bucks a night) and comperable to a motel 6.

I heard from Tech today -- Got them on the 19th.

tech claims that they haven't received my signature page and check, but they cashed it..??? anyone else have this kind of lag time with their application? they cashed it on the 13th.

Are ya'll taking your SO to the night before social? Also what is the dress code for the social?

Can't decide if we should stay with a med student or spend the $100 bucks or so for a place. BTW, I found dollar car rental for about $16/day from houston incase someone is flying in.

Call them for sure.

SO?

From what I've heard, you should stay with a med student. Its not about the money as much as it is about getting to know the school. You may feel a little uncomfortable at first, but you'll end up getting a very good view of the school from an insider's perspective.

How is Tech contacting? Phone? Email?

Tech is contacting by email.

And yeah, I will be taking my fiancee to the social/tours. What do you all think about that? Good idea or bad idea?

It is at Chili's - so "business casual" is what I would go with. Def don't need a suit and tie, but I'd shy away from shorts as well. Even nice ones... but that is just me.

I think it is fine - I mean she'll have to live there too!

I won't be taking my hubby, but that is because we will have a... maybe 6 week old?... by the time my interview rolls around.... someone has to watch her and the other two children!!

Wsup everyone,

I was in y'alls shoes not too long ago and just wanted to wish everyone good luck! :luck: Hopefully the new rolling admissions will be easier on the nerves than waiting until February. 😀 I know you guys will rock your interviews!

Its good to see chaeymaey and yourmom are back this year--your determination and hard work will pay off in the end. Just remember this is what you are going to be doing for the rest of your lives, so a few years here and there mean squat. Good luck to you guys too. :luck:

If anyone has questions about UTHSCSA feel free to PM me.

How about when are they going to start sending out INVITES!!! They are KILLING ME!! 🙂 The website says they'll start interviews in Aug - they are cutting it close if so. Anything thoughts?

I'm right there with you! They're the UT school that I'm #1 most interested in, so I would love to hear from them...

Edit: Since you offered, txguy, how about family-friendliness? That's the question that'll be at the front of my mind when they ask us "Do you have any questions for me?" but I'm a little reluctant to ask it.

Psyched out again - I thought you had gotten an interview.

I'm wondering about San Antonio too - I've heard such great things about the school I really want an interview just to see if it would be a good fit for me.

Regarding rolling admissions, I heard that some schools are using rolling admission only to invite the "cream of the crop" types who they want to give scholarships to. This is kind of disappointing because while I feel that I am a good applicant, I don't feel I am at the cream... I'm maybe sub cream... anyways, I was really looking forward to knowing before the calendar rolled over to '07 but it looks like I may have to wait for the match after all :scared:

Hey AggieJohn.. remember that time you were in that south american country and there were cats that scared the living daylights out of stray dogs?? good times good times.. congrats on all your interviews, apparently TX schools are going "anti-texas resident who went out of state for undergrad" on me. boo 🙁

I totally understand where you're coming from, but try to relaxxx! I'm not on the recruitment committee this year, but what I can tell you is that UTHSCSA usually takes a little bit longer to process applications and send out interview invites. And when they do send out invites, its not uncommon for them to come a week before your scheduled to interview (that's what happened to me). What you can do is make sure that you are "complete" at all of the schools, just so you know there is nothing on your end that is holding up the process. Hang in there!

Are you asking if UTHSCSA is a good school to attend if you have a family or if UTHSCSA might consider having a family a strike against you from an interviewing/admissions standpoint?

If there was any school in Texas that was "family friendly," it would be UTHSCSA. Although the average age has gone down slightly in recent years, UTHSCSA has a history of accepting "non-traiditional" applicants. (I am one myself 😀 ) Many of my classmates are married and a few have children, so its not totally uncommon.

By the way, I peeked at your profile and you have a very solid application and it looks like you applied broadly. Nice work and good luck :luck:

That's an interesting theory!

I peeked at your profile too....seriously, are you really worried?? You have very good stats and unless you are a complete tool in your interviews, I don't see you not matching anywhere this year. So even if that theory were true, I consider your application to be "cream of the crop" worthy. Congrats on your MCAT and GPA and good luck in the process!

TCOM usually sends invites pretty quickly. I had a friend who was invited to interview at TCOM two days after he was called with the invite! And he had only been complete for 2 weeks. He was accepted and will start this August.

Did you has a over 40 mcat score? I just wanna know if all texas schools are this fast

Random Thoughts:

Even though I am finding this waiting around for interviews stuff to be pretty nerve-wracking, I think that the wait after interviews will be worse. According to the TMDSAS web site, Texas resident offers don't begin until Nov. 15. The match is Feb. 15, so those of use that are getting interviews in early Aug. won't know the results until at least Nov. 15 (3.5 months!) and maybe even Feb. 15 (6.5 months!), depending upon how seriously schools take the new policies for pre-match admissions offers. Anyone hear anything about this from their premed advisors?

It'll be like MCAT score waiting all over again. Yikes. 😱

Even though I could probably use the extra $$$ for Medical School, I may just take classes this Fall to give me something else to do (as you can see by my volume of posts to SDN during the day, work doesn't really keep me that busy these days 🙂 )

LOL I think I am in the same boat as you, I discovered SDN this year I think I am already addicted

The whole rolling admissions things could turn out to be horrible, but I don't know. This website kind of implies that the match will be used to fill "remaining spots", which I hope means "the few left over". I want options! Early options!

http://www.utmb.edu/somstudentaffairs/admissions/New Rolling Admissions.html

What I'm afraid of happening is receiving an early offer from a school that I'm not particularly in love with, then having to decide either to take the acceptance or ditch it and hope something better comes from the match....if i would even match at all!!

Don't you have like amazing stats? I wouldn't worry about it. I think you can still rank the school that accepted you like number 2 on the match and if you don't get in at the higher ranked school you still get in. But maybe I'm not understanding it right.

Ok, I reread it (several times, haha)....seems like you can get an early offer, hold on to it (only one if you had multiples), and go through the match to see if anything better turns up. THAT seems fair, but then I guess something will have to be done about people gaining multiple acceptances at that point. Oh boy.

Anyways, I'm hoping the schools will discuss early offers at interview days. Right now, I'm guessing everyone will do it differently (some taking the "cream of the crop" like john said, some taking many more), but who knows!

Let's say you get two offers in the fall, neither of which are at your number 1 or number 2 choices, although you were interviewed at both of these. You have to decide between your two offers by January 15, then you can enter the match. So you rank your #1 choice number 1, your #2 choice number 2, then you rank your acceptance if you like that school more than all the others you might have had interviews at.

If you match into your #1 or #2 choice, you lose your prematch acceptance, because, hey, you don't need it anymore. It goes to someone else in the match. If you don't match into #1 or #2, you end up "matching" into your prematch acceptance.

Clear as mud? 🙂

As I recall, a couple years ago, UTSW had a 31+ MCAT and 3.6+ GPA cutoff for automatic earlier interviews........dunno if thats still the case........

Minor nit with this. I don't believe that you rank your prior acceptance in the match. From what I read on the TMDSAS web site, if you match ANYWHERE in the match, it automatically replaces your pre-match offer. But then again, I could be wrong, and I like your interpretation better anyway 🙂

Defending my honor! 😉

TMDSAS said:
The regular match will be conducted on February 15 to fill the remaining slots for the medical schools.
Applicants not holding an offer will submit a preference list ranking all schools where they interviewed
Applicants holding the one offer will also submit a preference list ranking that school and any other school(s) where they interviewed and did not receive a pre-match offer, if desired.
The deadline for applicants to submit their preferences online is February 1.
An applicant holding a pre-match offer who matches to a school he/she ranked higher than the pre-match offer school will automatically be withdrawn from the pre-match offer school and all other lower ranked schools. The applicant continues to remain open to be selected by schools he/she ranked higher.

I got a nice letter from the UTMB MD/PhD program today with lots of useful information and congratulating me on my MCAT score. Only problem is that I didn't apply MD/PhD

😕 Anyone else get that letter?

Your only hint is my member name.. shouldn't be too tough for you, from what i can tell. Good news though, finally heard back about interview from a few schools. THANK GOD, now if i could only find a cheap plane ticket...

So apparently, Southwestern is already inviting people for interviews! (I apologize if someone has posted this already, but I have not read the whole thread.. if that's what it's called, i'm a newbie). I got an e-mail from them today, about a week after my TMDSAS was processed. Their earliest interview date is 8/19, and they invited me to come on 8/26 (although I'm putting it off til mid Sept for personal reasons). The weird thing is, they don't even have my secondary (I should probably submit that sometime) or my pre-med committee packet.

Which brings me to another point: as a part of my summer program at UT-Houston, my fellow extern and I had a private meeting with the dean of admissions. He had a stack of apps on his desk and was in the process of choosing students for interview (without recs!!) So I guess a lot of the Texas schools might work this way? I'm not sure.. just thought I'd spread the news 🙂

Welcome to SDN! There are several people on here w/ SW interviews. Galveston interviews w/o LOR as well. I know A&M wants at least one before they sent an invite. No one has heard from San Antonio or Baylor yet but I think there's at least one person interviewing at every other TX school.
