Texas Interviews 2008: Part 2

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When you can? Are you saying that some places demand that you stay with a host?

I totally agree with you. I figure I'll do it for one school to see how I like it. I'm unconvinced by the "you get to know more about the school" argument unless you really have a ton of questions.

Or often you are interviewed by students...

The student host programs are independent of the admissions committee, at least for the Texas schools I'm interviewing at. Word might travel if you get trashed and break things, but I believe you're mistaken if you think staying with a host will give you a leg up in the process.

have people who have gotten houston interviews received a packet with the schedule for the day and other information like that? I got the email for an interview on aug 13, but i don't think they've mailed anything out to me yet. just wondering if i should be expecting something from them soon. my interview is aug 29th.

did you respond to the first email? Because they emailed me the info about 3-4 days after I confirmed the invitation.

Right. At the lunch last year I just sat there with the med students. I had asked practically everything the night before leaving nothing for the lunch conversation. I hope I didn't appear uninterested as a result... Bottom line, everything you need to know will be at your fingertips the day of the interview.

Lol, few things give you a leg-UP in this process. I'm talking about things that can screw you over! While you'd have to be a total douchebag to actually have your actions travel as far as the admissions committee, I'd like to play it safe anyway because you never know!

Besides, the more important thing is that if you ever have to ask for help with upperclassmen, it's not a good idea to have a bad rep preceding you.

Maybe I'm confused, are you saying that not staying with a student host gives you a bad reputation?

i just meant that financially i think i will end up staying with a host seeing as I have 9 interviews spread all over the country.

pat, are you URM or anything?

our numbers are similar, that's the only reason I ask.

Army, I am not a URM. I think that the reason that I am getting some interviews is that all of my bad grades (which are pretty bad) were in the begining and I have shown a good upward trend with my last 60 or so hours being around a 3.8. Also, I do have some pretty difficult situations that I have been through that I was able to put into my essays, and I have been asked about throughout my interviews. Now that is complete speculation, because I cant really think of any reason that I would be getting as much attention as I have.

hope this helps

My situation is similar to yours, minus the difficult times.

Maybe I'll get some attention once my LORs are finally processed.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah it probably helps that I have been complete and processed by tmdsas since 6/13

Ok, so I'm prepping for my interview at UTHSC SA on Monday. I'm trying to find stuff out about the school, but their website is horrible. I can't find anything that I'm looking for.

Could anyone let me in on the main points about the school?

Curriculum
Unique opportunities
Primary Care vs. Research
What's good about it
What's up with Harlingen

Thanks

Don't stress about the UTHSCSA interview - it was really, really cool (but I'm biased).

Curriculum - organ system based. Lots of lecture and lab in the first two years. Our 4th year tour guide said the school actually had to cut BACK on class hours after their first year because the accrediting agencies said they were doing too much.

Unique opportunities - San Antonio has such a diverse population that the pathologies of the patient population are varied more than other places. You see more types of illness than in other places. The Harlingen opportunity is also unique. The students were SUPER friendly - by far the friendliest I saw. The student population is also diverse - lots of different backgrounds.

Primary v research - they are known as a primary care school, moving toward research. They are implementing a distinction in research thing for graduates - complete with a tassel on the graduation gown, etc. The opportunities for research are vast, and they are really pushing it, but it is not mandatory.

What's good - see above! The interviews, themselves are, too. It seems they have made a really good-faith effort to match the interviewers with the interviewees, too. When I looked at my sheet, I wondered why on earth I was interviewing someone in the PICU. Turns out it was with a faculty member who had a background not unlike mine (both my interviewers were nontraditional students who stayed on at UTHSCSA for residency and as faculty). Another girl I met had a degree in psychology and interviewed with a psychologist. Two Asian students were marvelling that they were paired with VietNamese interviewers.

Harlingen - all the schools I've been to have the opportunity to do all or part of your 3rd year away. For San Antonio, one of the opportunities is in Harlingen, at a hospital or a clinic there. The deal with Harlingen is that the third years are paired with attendings. No residents in the middle or group settings - it's a one-on-one mentorship. The 4th year I talked to said she did her surgical rotation down there, and it was fabulous. You are basically the surgical second.

They will spend the morning telling you all this stuff, and you will have 2 interviews in the afternoon. It is total no-stress, but lots of walking, and, oh, it's San Antonio in August, so it will be hot, but you don't have to be outside too much.

Hope this helps!

Great!! Thanks a lot.

I kinda had general ideas about this stuff, but just wanted to verify.

Hey guys,

I just got back from a UTMB interview and I was just wondering how we should go about sending "Thank you" cards to the interviewers. I know they want these but I don't have the address of the interviewers and looking online, the only thing I could find was their email address but I feel that would be a bit informal.

With the exception of Southwestern, Texas schools purposely make it difficult to get any useful info from their websites. Sad, but true.

Is it so hard to create a page like this?

email is better than nothing. I'd go with that.

Actually I've been able to find stats on each school I've applied here in Texas.

Actually I've been able to find stats on each school I've applied here in Texas.

But were they on the web? That's what I'm asking. I know you can get them from other sources, but if you weren't on SDN, your chances dwindle exponentially.

did you respond to the first email? Because they emailed me the info about 3-4 days after I confirmed the invitation.

i did respond to the first email to confirm.
are you talking about the email about the pre- interview social and the housing? because that's the only info i received. did u also receive something in the mail?

I didn't even receive that. Guess it's time for an e-mail.

Has anyone who was processed on 6/20 not received a UTHSCSA invitation like me? I am starting to freak out. Maybe my LORs were bad? Maybe I really did get an invite but it got lost in the mail and I missed my interview date? I don't know what's going on...

I was processed on 6/20 and still haven't heard anything from UTHSCSA. Like you, I'm starting to think it got lost in the mail. haha 🙁

Real. Looks like I wasn't 100% correct. I couldn't find entering stats for UTMB or SA. Here are the links to the ones I could find. Not to overpimp TCOM here, but their profile is not too different than UTH, TTU, SA, or A&M. The other thing to take with a grain of salt is that these aren't all from the same year. UTH is from 2003 for example. I think Baylor with an average MCAT near 35 along with SW probably swallows up many of the very high stat folks.

Over the past couple years I've been really busy with a masters thesis. Outside of school I stay busy with friends, guitar, exercise, video games, and watching some news. I have to admit, I have not read one book (outside of textbooks) in years. So... in an interview, if I'm asked "what's the last book I've read" is it acceptable to say I haven't had time to read any?

Ok, now I can add Tech to the list. But why not other schools? WHY?

I mean, if I wasn't on SDN, I would have never heard of the MSAR. And even still, I did't want to pluck $30 of money that doesn't really exist(credit card) to buy either!

EDIT: Actually, I with all Texas schools would give a breakdown like Tech does. Too bad they just see us a pieces of money-giving meat until they accept us. Then we are money-givin students!! YAY!! 🙄

Seems like people haven't heard from Southwestern or Baylor in a while--- AHHH its driving me crazy! 😱

Does anybody have any idea as to when schools stop sending invitations for interviews? For those processed late June/ealry July, is what we have gotten probably all we will get...

I sure hope not. I hope they just put our apps to the side and will look at it again later or something.

haha, oh heck no! SDN is full of some of the most over achieving people I have ever seen. There are more interviews to be had, and more to be had on this site.

It's not even September yet! We'll still be hearing interviews into October for the Nov 15 D-day, and interviews into December are common.

Just got back from UTHSCSA. As everyone else has said, it was very relaxed. What a great place! I would love to go there. I'm sure that's how you feel after every interview.
Everyone I talked to said they killed at their interview. My only thought is, if everyone does so well how the heck does anyone stand out?

Has anyone tried the "stay with a DO student" option for TCOM?

Just got back from UTHSCSA. As everyone else has said, it was very relaxed. What a great place! I would love to go there. I'm sure that's how you feel after every interview.
Everyone I talked to said they killed at their interview. My only thought is, if everyone does so well how the heck does anyone stand out?

I'd say almost everyone thinks they killed their interview, but only a few actually do.

Do you have some basis for this or is that what you think?

Just what I think.

I'm not trying to sound negative, but it is what I believe. I do think many people do fine in their interviews just not great.

Ughh, I'm having so much trouble preparing for my interviews. I'm kind of burnt out from the whole application process. First interview is in less than two weeks too 🙁.

How does one go about getting a mock interview?

-Edit-

Nevermind, I found out my pre-med committee does mock interviews 😀.

Do u think those that interviewed early (like now) have a better chance of being accepted than those interviewing in late Sept/early Oct for the NOV 15th date?

you just got back?

me too. It was awesome, but I don't think I "killed" the interview. I was me so hopefully I stood out.

My interview was a lot more stressful than what I saw in the interview feedback. I got a lot of those vague questions that are really hard to answer. Then, inevitably we ended up discussing Africa for the majority of the time. I liked my faculty interviewer but not so much my student interviewer. I didn't feel like we clicked. Could be wrong, I guess.

I got really lucky. My student interviewer sat with me for lunch. I was able to break the ice and make a few jokes.

I kind of had a similar experience. Ok interview, but probably not superb, and I also wasn't that fond of my student interviewer. Hopefully they didn't find me weird and reject me T_T

Heading out to College Station tomorrow night. Anyone up for an SDN get together at the Chicken or Freebirds? PM me and let me know. It'd be good to put some faces with names.

I would but I'm working all day tomorrow in Austin. I'm not sure when I'll be able to start heading to CS. If I get there late we can always meet Thursday. I'll be the guy in the suit.

hi,

i was wondering if anyone is having a problem with the recommendation letters being confirmed at college station?

Got the Tech invite. Good ol' undergrad came through

I know someone who just got an interview date at Texas A&M. He was processed 6/13 but submitted his secondary the same date I did. I was processed 6/20 and submitted my secondary about two weeks after I was processed. He received an interview invitation at A&M and I haven't received one-- but we both got completed the same day. (I also haven't received UTHSCSA.) I'm not sure what's going on, was I rejected?. Any ideas? (My stats-- 3.9 GPA and 33 MCAT.)

I highly doubt you were rejected. It's too early to think that. How are your ECs? Those two schools seem to, in my opinion, pay more attention to different aspects of your application than other schools. Basically, stats don't seem to weigh as much with them.

Are your LORs in?? I'm pretty sure A&M won't interview without them.
