TEXAS Med Schools Entering Class 2004 Applicant Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know and that is one reason why I go back and forth with it. I reserved my spot, which is non-binding. Great courses and experience on rotations. Students are happy. $1300 tax free per month to live in DC/Bethesda area and a good salary. Mid fifties for residency. I used to live there and love it. I have already been in touch with the peds/onc fellowship (my area of interest) director and he has been really supportive. My father was also a doc at Brooke Army Med Center in San Antonio and I have spoken with many grads of USUHS. In general they loved it and my father swore by their skills. Hey, in the end, a broad array of options would be nice. However, I am very happy with that acceptance so far and I am seriously considering it.

Initial Processing Date - sent to schools(s) 11/12/2003

Hi All,

I am curious. How many of you guys have heard from most of the TMDSAS medical schools other than UTSA? Are they just slow in screening the applications? I am still waiting to hear from them (application transmitted 7/15/03). It is getting frustrating because according to their website they will stop interviewing on December 8.

Good luck to you all!

The interview at A&M yesterday was great. They are all about just getting to know you. I had one ethical question and I had to defend my record, but it was very low stress. Scott & White was awsome! The only down side was it was a very long day. I was really tired by the time my second interview came around. My first interview was at 8 am and the second a 4 pm, 8 hour apart. The day went from 7-9, 10 hour day!

Congrats on the interviews everyone! It's nice to see the activity picking up once again.

Anyone calculated how many days 'til Feb 1? I feel like a nine year old waiting for Christmas! (Whaddya mean 2 1/2 months?!?)

Theresa

BUMP... any news... anyone???

Trauma Junky:

How was your interview at Texas AM. Did you win them over with your fast wit and charisma 😀 ? Also, have you heard from UTSA? I am still waiting to hear from them. UTSA last interview date is 12/8.

I'm calling them today! I have a lot of stuff coming up (finials, comp. oral exam, birthdays, brother-in-law is getting commissioned in the Army...) around those days and would like to plan it out. My tank is already on low for this semester. Today on the way form Houston to SA, I was falling asleep at the wheel. I stoped in Giddings to get some coffee and locked my keyes in the car 😡 Luckly there was a guy there that was good at slim jimming (if that is a phrase?). So it only added an hour on to my trip. 🙁

The TAMU interview was great. I did have my first interviewer talking about college football before it was over. The interviews are only 30 min, but we ended up talking for close to an hour. My second interview went great according to my interviewer, but he was completely unprepared for my interview I think. Nice guy though.

Ok, just talked to the office on the phone. Interviewing is going to go through the 15 of Dec. They told me my file was still under review, but I know for a fact it is complete. So, I guess untill they pull you up for interview (you could already be recommended, but not pulled up yet) they will not tell you otherwise.

could have been a closed file interview.

 HollyJ, HAPPY BRITHDAY!!!!!

HI guys, hope you don't mind me asking this on the TX thread!

I got an interview with Univ. of Washington (yipee!) in January. I know several of you TX premeds have interviewed out of state. Was it different from the tX interviews? Did your interviewers bring up the fact that there are many schools in tX, ask why you were applying of-of-state?

UW has a rep on SDN for having really tough interviews, some I'm a tad bit nervous about it. All my TX interviews were so easy going!

Congrats TheresaW!!! Tell us out it goes. 😀

None of my out of state interviews have asked why I applied out of state. They didn't bring up the issue of Texas having so many schools either.

You'll be fine. Be sure to have a good reason of why you applied to their school/area of the world.

I've itnerviewed out of Texas, and I was asked why I applied to their school and what else attracted me to the area.

You should have definitely talked to Dr. Jones about this. The cookies and punch session in the afternoon is intended for you to talk about you interviews and it sounds to me that you should have sought another interview after the first one--if the interviewer talked about personal issues that bordered on unethical. AT every school someone will have a bad interviewer--mine was a very arrogant MS III at Baylor who thought no one was as qualified as him to do anything but fart. That really sucks you had a bad time. I would email Dr. Jones and talk to him about it. I think at every school I interviewed at somone cried--I think it's the pressure mixed with some of the jerks who interview you.

I definately agree. I worked iwth Dr. J for several years and set up the recruitment committee. If you have any kind of really negative experience iwth an interview LET HIM KNOW> This is inapropriate behavior and Dr. Jones will remedy it. He has not had people interview after hearing of bad experiences like this.

<b>OrthoFixation</b> I was a non traditional and graduated from UTHSCSA. I also had my kid in 3rd year. I loved living in san antonio. Especially after having lived in Dallas for 10 years. The school was amazing. Lots of families.

<b>Gleevec</b> I wouldn't recommend having your spouse tag along on your interviews. I was on the admissions committee at UTHSCSA and I think I would think it odd if I saw a spouse hanging around. I think its fine to take her to the city but I wouldn't have her come on the interview day.

Okay, I can't make it through 24 pages, as much as I miss parts of medical school and texas but for those of you interviewing, feel free to e me or post to me with any questions. I taught MCAT for the past 5 years (while in med school) and was on the admissions committee. I intend to do admissions at some point and have worked closely with members of the selection committee as well as Dr. Jones.

I took the august MCAT and applied and interviewed at the four UT schools and Baylor.

best of luck to everyone.

I wouldn't worry to much about it. UTSA is always a little more thorough and slower because they don't grant interviews just on numbers. The selection comittee meets once a week so they get backed up because they read every single thing in your application before they grant an interview. I heard from them last....

(my stats were Undergrad 3.87, Grad 3.9, MCAT 32)

so, try and be patient... and best of luck.

Well, after going out with my gf for 4 years, it does sorta feel like she's my spouse at times. Oh well, hit a little too close to home. 😛

I was wondering what was going on that I couldn't find the original comments. I was wondering when Gleevec got married.

Well, it was very nice to see all these post about home.... and I was trying to keep them all straight. after 10 pages, it all blurred together....

😛

So who DID get married?

Thanks for the input. It is hard to believe that with those kind of stats you received such a late interview. I'm glad to hear that UTSA looks at the whole package.

Good to hear of your success. Talking of aggie football could put one into a depression 😀. But, I'm an Oklahoman by birth and a OU fan 😍. TTU football is pretty exciting too. It is hard for me to embrace the Longhorns given the history, but they are pretty tough.

hi guys,
ive heard rumors that ut houston and galveston grant interviews based solely on numbers. i was curious if you knew whether that was true, and why i might not have heard anything yet. i got a 35q and have a 3.35 from duke with a strong upward trend. any ideas? i feel that time is running out...

I believe that about both of them. They don't have secondaries. All they have is one essay and your numbers.

do you think my credentials are strong enough for an interview?

Well, not to put a fly in the ointment....But I interviewed there last year with less than perfect numbers. I was even waitlisted (and there were ~75-100 on that waitlist) there. Didn't get in, obviously, but also haven't received a traditional MD interview invite, either. However, I am in the running for an MD/PhD slot. Make of that what you will.

For those of you that are still wondering whether Dallas is still extending offers for an interview, I just got an invite for Dec. 6 in the mail today! So keep your fingers crossed.

Congratulation ndi_amaka  My friend is still waiting to hear from them. I believe that there are still 3 more rounds of interviews left at Dallas. GOOD LUCK!

btw, for those who have interviewed there (ahem, theresa, holly, gleevec, you know who you are!) any thoughts? opinions? i mean, besides what you might find on interview feedback?

congrats ndi!

Now I have the horrible (😉 ) duty of ranking the schools figuring outwhere I wanna go. I will have interviewed to everywhere but TCOM (didn't apply) and I haven't heard from A&M but I don't wanna go there anyway. I really loved Tech but Lubbock is just not for me. Houston was great but the traffic had me swearing.....

Out of Tech, UTMB, Houston, UTSA, and Dallas....how would u rank the schools?

Spumoni, I thought the UTSW day was a lot like Baylor's. Interviews are centralized and on a tight schedule. (my 1st ran long and I was late to my 2nd!😱 She wasn't upset, though.)

The Admissions staff is very friendly, they make you feel welcome. Some of the speeches are pretty amusing and the senior video is entertaining. The pace for the day is pretty quick.

It is open-file and I was asked a lot of questions from my application. Both interviewers had read the file and taken notes.

If you're interested in research, you will be impressed!

Good luck!
Theresa

Well I want to match at UTSA so I would tell you to got UTSW😛

San Antonio is a cool city....but I should stay as far away from the San MArcos outlet malls as possible....

They told me I got an interview. I did get the "reviewed" answer from UTSW and UTMB people...and I got interview offers. I guess the best thing to do is be patient.

Did UTSA send the invite more than 2 weeks in advance?

Judging from the students I met, I would say that they are a brainy bunch of people and that they all want to do really well. They say there's no problem with people actually trying to sabotage fellow classmates, though. UTMB and UTSA seemed much more relaxed and spent more time talking about their social lives.

I'm torn between UTH and UTSW. I live in Houston now and the med center is primo (though not the traffic!). On the other hand, I'm thinking I want to do a subspecialty and maybe UTSW would give me a better leg up for that. I grew up in the Dallas area.

It's really tough to decide. One day I'm focused on the reputation/match list, another day I'm more worried about which city is better for my family... Guess I should be grateful to have choices! But do I? 'Cus maybe none of them will choose me! (time for more pepto!)

ppssssttttt!

UTH! 😉

but seriously, I may be able to answer some questions if you have them.

if you are SUPER HARD CORE into research, you should probably go UTSW, they just have more of that focus there, Houston's main focus is clinical. besides that, no matter what school you go to, you will be able to get into a really good residency if you do well, do some research (both schools have programs set up to do this), and get to know the right people. there will be people at each institution who are very well respected in their field. I personally have no problem finding a wealth of surgeons that let me show up to watch surgery, scrub in as a first year, and teach me and point out to me stuff as they go along. I have a friend who is a surgical intern who went to a non-Texas school that can't believe the head of the surgery residency program already knows my name and lets me tag along. I have too many options of doctors to follow I honestly don't know who to go to next. and I've also helped some of my classmates set up similar situations in other specialties. go for what situation (school, location, family situation, etc) that will make you the happiest because I truely believe being happy and well adjusted will go a long way towards you doing well in school. hope that helps. 🙂

Both Dallas and Houston are huge cities, and I am sure you wont have much of a problem finding a part of the city that will be good for your family. Both UTSW and UTH students seemed not to have much trouble in finding a nice place, based on my vicist.

So if both cities have good parts you can live in, you really should only worry about which school you yourself like more and that you feel will provide you with a better medical education.

If you are interested in an internal medicine subspecialty, UTSW is supposed to be absolutely ridiculous and the best program in TX. UTH through the TMC has a lot of good facilities and programs as well. But definitely make the choice based on your career plans, because there are good parts to both cities that you can definitely live in.

Hey y'all,
I just got accepted to Baylor! Thanks for putting up with me all this time.
