it's kinda like christmas eve...except i highly doubt i'll be pleasantly surprised tomorrow

So I get all excited because I see the TCOM letterhead in the ol' mailbox. (even though logically I know they CALL to let you know about interviews - so what does logic have to do with this process??)

Yeah, they just wanted to let me know about the hospital closing. Thanks, TCOM!!

Still no invites. I've been thinking about what I'll do about next cycle. I'll probably fork over the $1500 to take Kaplan or PR to up my MCAT, the GPA is pretty fixed, I would have to take alot of classes to pull that up. BTW, my overall is about 3.4, and the science is 3.2. Low I know. I do have room for improvement on the MCAT, I would just rather gouge my eyes out than have to retake that damn thing. I've been looking into PA programs. I'll probably apply to both next year. I have too many other commitments to keep applying year after year, esp. if I'm limited in what I can do to improve my application.

Saw someone mention on another thread about letters of interest. Does anyone think this would help me out or not? It's worth my time to write up a very nice letter and mail it off if it can at least get me an interview. I interview very well - got lots of practice from all the different jobs I've applied to!

AT BAYLOR: I hope my interviewer was awake when I came before the admissions committee... he wasn't when he interviewed me!

Ugh! Baylor's apparently LOST my secondary application. They received my money just fine, but they're doing a search for my application now. The status page says that I've submitted and can't make any more changes, but they never received it. So...does that mean that my application is floating out there somewhere in cyberspace? 🙄 I'd gladly resubmit if they'd let me to save time looking for it!

Sorry...just a little frustrated if you can't tell.

You might find that PA school is even more competitive than med school. There are significantly more people applying and less spots than in medical school. Just something to think about.

Look at the rest of your app too. What are you volunteering experiences? What about research? Consider really reworking your PS (this can really make or break you), and then your MCAT. A really solid MCAT can open the interview doors much easier. A prep course is expensive however, so is applying year after year (and if you want to look at it, you lose 100,000+ each year you postpone getting to the point where you will open a practice).

You can also always teach for TPR or kaplan if you do well, and this is a great source of money... 🙂

I met some fabulous people at the TAMU interview yesterday. Bright, funny, and sarcastic.

*sniff*

Makes this frog proud to be a Texan. :horns: 👍

Got excited last night when I saw an envelope from UTMB in my mailbox. 👍

NOT so excited when I found out that it was a solicitation to consider their nascent MD/PhD program. 👎

Sorry frogman! How dare they tease you like that! 👎

thanks, Jess. Did anyone else receive this letter? It seemed pretty generic to me.

Hey, thanks for responding with some good advice. Also, I for one appreciate the fact you are following our thread and helping us out with our questions. (even if your primary reason is to try and hook up with your froggie!!)

I'm not considering PA school b/c I think it will be easier or less competitive, but I see it as an alternative to med school because its a more direct path to getting out there and taking care of patients. UTMBs program is only 27 months long and while I would love to be a doctor, my ego is not so great that I would trade the 4 years of school, 3+ years of residency just to have the title and be "head (wo)man in charge".

I still have a couple of years before I think I'll reach my own personal cutoff (I've pretty much decided that if I can't get accepted and matriculate by the time I'm 35, then I'll call it quits or consider other paths). I even considered getting my BSN and working for a couple of years then going on to be a NP, but my sister is a nurse and she told me she would kick my ass if I went that route!

Anyone hear anything from Baylor????

I received an interview to UTSW today, my first one. I'm pretty excited, to say the least. I submitted on 9/15, processed on 10/12, submitting their secondary tonight. To boost the confidence of those with low numbers, my GPA is pretty low, so keep your head up. This definitely takes the edge off of my Vanderbilt rejection, more so than the JD and cokes that I devoured the evening following my reception of that infamous little envelope. Good luck everyone, stay confident. 👍

I got the letter too, Evo. It's now in the trash.

Had my UTMB interview today and I met ifailedmcat. Pretty cool! One of my interviews lasted over an hour (is that bad??? 😕 )!

Can't wait til my TAMU interview next week. Everyone seemed to like it! 👍

I think that the longer your interview, the better it is. I think the only bad sign is where they cut the interview early.

Hey texans,
I have a really bad situation on my hands:

Last year I was the victim of identity fraud. Its a big mess and a long story but to be brief i'll explain:

this guy stole my money
I wrote hot checks thinking I had money
My mom didn't help, my dad didn't help, I was screwed.
Didn't get any money back
So...bad credit

this lady that owns a business and I wrote a hot check to her last year never called me or spoke to me at all after the incident. She called the other day and said she talked to the admissions comittee at TAMU and made a formal complaint against me about the outstanding debt. I freaked out and paid her (now no longer dependent on my mom i can pay her)

am I screwed...how can sombody do this and will I not get into A&M now (my top choice)

cry cry cry

How substantial was this check? If it's not that large, it shouldn't be that big of an issue. Also, how'd she know you were applying to TAMU? If I were in your shoes, I'd first make sure she actually sent that letter. If she did, I'd send a letter explaining why the check bounced (identity theft is a pretty solid reason) and follow it up with a phone call to the admissions office. Sorry to hear about your predictament, but it will work out. I doubt that this is going to hurt you too bad, if it does at all, as long as you clearly explain to TAMU that you were the victim of identity theft. Good luck man

Depends upon the school. For Houston, Tech, etc., it shouldn't be a problem.

I got one for some Wed in November....I'd like to go but I don't think I can afford to stay in a hotel or can I afford to miss anymore school. I'm still thinking about it though.

Ask those who want a Southwerstern interview. It would seem like time is running out. But who knows?

I received it a few days ago, can people who attended the TT Alumni/applicants reception in Houston tell us a little about it, was it helpful? Also were people wearing suits mostly?

I think the Houston one is on Monday...not sure. I would prefer to go to Houston b/c it's only about 2 hours away whereas Grapevine is like 4 hours away. 😕 Some people at my school got invites for the Houston one...I would go on Monday but I think they were supposed to RSVP.

Are you going to the one in Grapevine (near Dallas) on October 27th??

Anybody else going? 😕 😕

Jess is right, the Houston one is Monday, Oct 18. It says "business attire" at the bottom, but seeing as how I work in downtown Houston and see so-called "business attire" everyday, that may or not be very helpful! I was not planning on wearing a suit, I don't have one yet, but I do have nice outfits. I'll try and post how it went after I get back on Monday.

Thanks!! 👍 The one in Dallas is on the 27th, so it would be great to see what it is like.....

Have you already interviewed at Tech yet?

Was everyone who applied to Tech supposed to get one of these invites? I interviewed in early September, but didn't receive anything from them.....is this bad?

Although you're from Houston, maybe you'll get an invite for the Dallas one (I got it in the mail just yesterday), since the Houston one is already coming up this Monday. 😳

It just sounds like an information gathering opportunity more than anything, so it should be no biggie to have not received the invitation.....

Txguy- ah, sorry.. its been awhile since I thought about getting into residency, I am thinkin gabout fellowship now.. 😀 The housing, as a resident, is gauranteed.

Its just nice for med students.. you don't stay in the housing with residents but with the columbia med students... if you rotate here....

aidan- I can understand. however, being a md is much more than just being in charge. while PA's are very valued in many practices, you will never have the training to delve deeper, to figure out anything other than the most basic. It isn't a bad thing, its just on a different level. If it doesn't bother you to 1-always be practicing under someone elses liscence (thus to some degree always at thier mercy) and 2- you like not delving deep into a patients health issues, being a PA can be really rewarding.

I like helping. Having worked with Dr.Jones and a close friend on the selection comittee, I find admissions very intruiging. Also, teaching for 5 years has really given me some good perspective. Most people don't realize where thier weakness really lies in thier application.

Hi all. I'm going to the Tech social in Houston on Monday but I haven't received an interview invited. I'm pretty sure that it doesn't have anything to do with the admissions office.

Did any of you notice any changes made to your TMDSAS application following submission? For some reason, I believe that they added that I was adding an extra letter of recommendation that is necessary only if I am applying to Baylor Dentistry (which I am not). Additionally, a hard return was in one of the paragraphs in my biography section that I'm almost positive I didn't add. Not really a big deal, just makes my app look a bit sloppy which can't be a good thing. Later
