Thanks!! 👍 The one in Dallas is on the 27th, so it would be great to see what it is like.....

Have you already interviewed at Tech yet?

-tx
Nope, no interviews to date. Hoping that changes soon. (obviously!)

Okay good. I'm from the Austin area, so maybe that's why (Dallas and Houston are both 2+ hours away). Still, I feel a bit excluded (sniff, sniff).

So come on down to the Houston affair. I'm sure that it's not a recruting thing (as I've not received an invite). If you want I'll send you the details.

There is also a Tech Alumni/Applicant reception in Dallas (Grapevine) on October 27th. I interviewed at Tech in September and received one. From what I have heard here on this thread, it looks like Tech non-discrimnantly sends the invite to students that have applied to Tech--so I assume its just an opportunity to learn more about the school and perhaps meet some fellow applicants.

We'll know more about the event when the houstonians (this is a word right? lol) go to their event tomorrow night. SDN comes through again!

I don't know if this is the place to ask this question, but I'll go ahead:

Does anybody know anything about the atmosphere at UTSW as far as competition and snobbiness goes? The stuff I've read on their website has really impressed me and I'm looking forward to my interview there, but a few profs from my school think it's terrible when it comes to gunners and competitiveness. I know it's still a Texas school so it can't be as bad as an east coast school. Any thoughts? 😕

Thanks for any help! 🙂

Several friends from my undergrad are there and they say that the rumor is false. To be honest, I've heard that from a lot of people too, BUT the people who I've heard it from aren't even students at UTSW. I would talk to UTSW students and get their honest impression of the competition.

I have a number of friends who attend UTSW. Some of which are quite snobby and complain of others snobbiness. Hypocritical, yes! I find that amongst Texas schools, UTSW is THE snobbiest and most competitive school. I did my own little experiment on this by attending many functions at UTSW and Baylor. Baylor students are SO much more friendly. They are all really nerdy, but truly care about each other. UTSW students still study in groups, but they represent more of the gunners in Texas. A direct quote from someone attending UTSW--- "I can't believe they let her in here! She only got a 30R on her MCAT!" Still UTSW is a great school and fosters some of the greatest minds in the country. They also have great facilities like the rec center. It is second to none!

One girl I know that attended Baylor COM would not tell the employees at McDonald's that they screwed up her order because she doesn't like confrontations. Of course, this is not true for most of the students at Baylor but goes to show that Baylor students as incredibly friendly. I have yet to meet someone at Baylor that I haven't liked! However I know some UTSW students that would tell some employees where to put their sandwich!

Thanks for the info guys. I'm just worried I won't get a representative view on the interview day. 1) Who is going to say something bad about their school on the day people are interviewing there? and 2) How much do we actually get to see of the students on a Saturday?

If someone had a 30 and was talked about....I don't even want to know what they would say about me. :scared:

I'm still going to be open-minded about the school and see what I see.

I got bad news for my Tech interview this Friday. Last night I injured my toe pretty badly. I was taking my dog out and this man startled me...apparently he didn't have a place to park and was asking me about it. I turned around abruptly and before I knew it, I was face down but my foot was in the same place. My toe was bleeding profusely and somehow the skin underneath my nail is outside of the nail, but the nail is fine. 😕 Even the skin with the fold where the nail inserts on the side is all out of place. Anyway, enough of the details....it hurts BAD!! I can't wear shoes and can hardly walk on it. Maybe the pain will go away by Fri and I will be able to wear my shoes (they're the pointy kind)....but I don't know what I will do if the pain doesn't go away. 🙁 I don't think it's a good thing to wear flip flops to interviews and that's about the only thing that's working right about now.

Did anyone else receive a letter from Galveston re: their new MD/PhD program? It begins "We are writing to inform you about a program that may be of interest to you..."

i didn't know if everyone got it, or if they sent it to me based on my application (i've done a bunch of research).

i got it. ive done about a year of research, but it looked very generic: "dear applicant"

Ouch!!

At the very least, I think this will make for an interesting ice-breaker! Maybe you can find some closed toe shoe that is comfortable? If not, it looks like open toe is the only way to go....good luck and get well 👍

Just in case, check your Tech invite for a cancellation window/policy so you can re-schedule 🙁

Hiya Jess:

Sorry to hear about your toe. 🙁 Maybe you could email the Tech people and ask them if you can wear some sort of flats?

A couple of us have received it. Trashcan time.

Last year I was invited to interview at UT Houston and UTMB, I ended up withdrawing my application (personal problems that would hinder undergrad graduation date) so I cancelled the interviews... and this year I have not gotten any from either of those schools. Is anyone else a reapplicant who has or has not gotten interviews from the schools?

I have only heard from UTHSCSA and TCOM, but I would love to go to either of them.

did you inform UTH and UTMB of your reasons for turning down the interviews and withdrawing your application? you may want to write a nice little letter explaining your situation and expressing interest in interviewing there this year. i've heard (heard! that doesn't mean it's authoritative) that neither of those 2 schools is very nice to reapplicants, but you never know.

in related news, which HS did you go to in plano and what year did you graduate?

You're probably right a letter of interest couldn't hurt, right? I don't really care much about Houston, but I would be interested in Galveston...

I went to high school in Frisco (Frisco High School, back when it was the only one in Frisco) and graduated in 2000. I'm currently at UNT. You?

Well you can't beat UTHSCSA and you've already heard from them, so don't worry about UTH or UTMB 😀 then again i'm a little biased...

i graduated from plano senior high in '00...but now my fam is up in frisco. how bout that

I agree about UTHSCSA, but it's always good to have backups in case they don't want me 🙁

evo , love, there are no weaknesses in you. 🙂

MadameLULU Honestly, after reading an ungodly amount of applications and PS, I think that hte personal statement is the greatest weakness in the VAST majority of applicants. This is the true cincher in an application and can really set you appart. Also, not acknowledging other accomplishments and events in your life in your application.

Hey guys,
I just graduated from UT Austin and this will be my second time applying to UTHSCSA. I have a 3.5 gpa and a 27 on the mcat (9-9-9) and unfortunately I'm not a Texas resident. I have good extra curriculars too =)
Do you think I have a chance?

Cat

I interviewed at UTH two weeks ago, but haven't heard anything from the other schools. Is there any historical precedence of interviews offered at other schools if one is offered at UTH?

I don't know anything about non-residents... are you bilingual ( I am and I think that helped.)???

Hey Schoolgirl,

I am a reapplicant and have heard from every school so far except for the same two. I only got an interview at UTH last year; maybe theyre waiting until the last few interviews to review our apps again since we applied last year? 😕

Hope everyone is having a great Monday!

For those that interviewed at UTSW--are you guys going to go back and round? I wish they had mentioned this before the interview because I would have arranged to go in the Friday before, but now I will have to fly up again to round. It just seems that it would be a good opportunity to check out the school and hospital on a typical teaching day. What do you guys think?

Eralza--first your feet and now the disturbing mandog. [eye brow raised]

Hey guys, I haven't posted in while because we are in the process of moving and my internet connection has already been transferred to the new house. I had my UTMB interview on Friday and I met UTKB (she was pretty cool 😉). All in all, I loved UTMB. For some reason I thought the whole place would be run down, but the school and facilities there were really nice. I am seriously considering ranking it above Houston now.

Interesting note, both of my interviewers stated that they believed it was all a numbers game. Basically, if you have good numbers, you're in.

Oh yea, I will also be at the Tech reception in Houston tonight. I won't have time to post again (I'm at school right now), so I'll just leave my name and info here for those who are interested in meeting me. My name is Danny and I'll be the asian guy with a gray tie 👍

I'll also be there. Look for the smoking frog. 😀

As far as what your interviewer said: Yep.

I'll be there in a blue shirt and tie. Probably one of the only AA there. 🙁 Look forward to meeting fellow SDNers.

heres a question for yall tx folk:
im currently takin' 18 hours in the hopes of graduating this semester from UTaustin. only thing is that in one of my harder courses it looks like the best im gonna be able to do is get a C in the class. and by stickin with it, and putting in extra effort to make the passing grade, i would be doing so no doubt to the detriment of the other 5 classes. so , whatcha think? stick it out and go with the crappy last semester grades or drop the class and retake in spring semester, with a few fun courses. thanks

its really your call on this one. if you really want to get out of school then stick with it--i don't think last semester grades really affect anything. but if you really like school and want to hang out with your friends/etc and take those blow off courses than do that. fortunately, there isn't a wrong answer on this one. aren't you basically 1/2 way through the semester?

if it were me, i'd get outta there and do some things that you won't have time for during med school. i'm quitting my job in january to travel for 6 months before starting med school--pretty pumped about it 😀 !

Hey latin... I went to UT AUstin and graduated in May. The most hours I could stand to take was 16. It's a tough call. Would you rather have a W on your transcript or a C? It depends on the class also. If it's a med school prereq, I MIGHT drop it and take it in the spring rather than get a C. OTOH, you would graduate a semester early....hmmmm....hmmm....I say, go ahead and take it, get the C, get the hell outta college. You might even get a B with a curve... 😉 And the med schools already have your transcript that they'll use to make their desicion, ya know? Hopefully though you won't have to reapply, and have that ugly C on there. Wow, I ramble..... 😛

Its gonna be good times. Starting off in February trekking in Pategonia for a month or so before heading over to Aus./New Zealand and circling back through SouthEast Asia and Eastern Europe. If you want to know more just PM me.

You guys have fun at the Tech thing tonight.

Does anyone have any general idea if there is a certain number of interviews you should have for TX schools so you dont have to worry about getting accepted to at least one?

~Abby 🙂

(sorry if this was already asked)

I have heard several times that four Texas interviews will most likely do it. However, I have talked to people who have been accepted with just one, and rejected with three. So in other words, I guess it is really hard to tell.

I think that the more interviews you have, the better chance you have of being accepted somewhere in Texas. However, if you don't interview very well, your chances would obviously decline. Having a great personality and good interviews could be the kicker for your acceptance.

On another note, I found out today that I was accepted to Saint Louis University in Missouri! I'm SO EXCITED! However, I'm still hoping to get into a Texas school, due to the VAST difference in tuition!

Have fun at the Tech thingy tonite guys =)

A friend of mine went to the thing in Houston tonight. He didn't think it was worth traveling to....what did you think evo?

Also, he said that the letter said "business casual" so he wore a nice shirt and khaki pants.....everyone else was in a suit, he reported. Just in case y'all go to the dates coming up, keep that in mind!

I couldn't make it to the Tech thing either. How did it go (for those who went)? Was it worth it?

Anyway, hope you guys are having a great Monday night. Me...I'll be stuck in the library writing a paper late into the night. 🙁 My fault for procrastinating.
