i actually have a question for you guys. I applied to only MD programs, but let's say suddenly my interest in research has peaked, and now I am contemplating getting a MD-PhD. Is it possible to still get into a school's MD-PhD program? Should I just email the MD-PhD director of whatever school I match at and see what they reccomend?

You can enter the program later. The student tour guide I had at UTMB did just that. However, you may still have to formally apply for the program, which also means going through the interviews for it.

USC I disagree. Biochem is not necessary for med school. I didn't take it and got an A in med school. I knew *smart* people who took it in undergrad and still had trouble. That is because the vast majority of what you do in undergrad biochem has *NOTHING* to do with biochem in medical school. You would be much better off taking a conceptual based class like physiology or immunology.

And that what would I be game? I was 100% sure I was going to do pediatric rheumatology. *never* even considered EM. 😀

I agree about the biochem. Not necessary. It helps the class flow a little easier, but not much more, and I took two classes of honors biochem in undergrad. Its not complicated information, just a lot.

[Aside: I read that sentence twice, then a couple more times outloud...I have no idea what that says. 😕 ]

That's my special interest too! I personally know and have shadowed a female neuroradiologist (who is married to a neurosurgeon--wow, what a power couple!) and I absolutely have fallen in love with the field. It is basically four years of radiology (residency) and one year of a neuro-radiology fellowship. This is quite a lofty goal, and I'm sure that others will scoff at it, but hopefully my determination, obsessive-compulsiveness, motivation, and hard work will get me through! Looks like you're more interested in the research aspects though, am I correct?

I'm SICK of WAITING!!!!!!!!

Amen to that! only 10 more days!

As for my preferred specialty, I really think surgery is for me, probably neurosurgery. 🙂

I'm considering internal medicine.....everything that I loved about my Human Phys and Histology had to do with internal medicine. Of course, I haven't been exposed to much....only shadowed a pediatrician and cardiologist, so I still have a lot to see before I make-up my mind.

I always thought medical toxicology or infectious diseases sounded interesting as a specialty/sub-specialty. Very unconventional. Very sick pts.

I'm taking off work for match day. Anyone else?

ALMOST ONE WEEK LEFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One week, we are barely past the 1.5week mark. These next ten days are going to be worse than waiting for my MCAT scores.

I think I am going camping tomorrow, so that should help.

Does anyone have crazy urges to buy stuff? I constantly feel like spending money lately.

Well, I don't count the weekends. And you might say that the match will post Monday (night), rather than Tuesday (morning). And Friday's almost over. This equates to one week in my time.

Damn it... my cats are fighting again.

My lmfu was last updated 11/15/04 and my last validation date was 12/15/04. I don't think that it has anything to do with the match. All yall should just go to the bar and hang out instead of all of this incessant worrying.

my LMFU still 12/14/04

and im thinking.....Ob-gyn, or infectious disease (weird combo, i know).

Yeah, I talked to an MD/PhD at UT Houston about that - he said it's not unheard of for Texas students to get into the program after their first year - but usually they have good MS1 grades and research experience. Good luck!

lol....I think when it takes that long to explain how there is just a week left....

I agree - I can't stand this wait - waiting for the MCAT seemed MUCH easier!!! Hehe - med schools could prob. get us to agree to anything at this point - what an extra 20k a year in tuition, but I find out a day early...DEAL! hmm..spend the next 10 years practicing on a remote area of alaska that only has 10 minutes of sunshine a year...for $4.83/hr...but I find out early, DEAL!

Personally, I thought the MCAT wait was worse. I haven't had dreams about the match, but I did have dreams where I got a 12 on the MCAT. Plus the ambiguity of the MCAT post date was kinda not cool.

Does anybody have a link to that "specialty website" that someone posted awhile back in pre-allo? (I think maybe it was GutsyGal or SFAJess who originally posted the link--I could be wrong!)

Its the one where you answer some questions and based on your responses, it matches you with 2-3 specialties?

I thought that might be fun to fill out.....

Thanks,

Me too JDAD, you aren't alone; so I went and satisfied that urge by buying a new digital camera and a new electronic drum kit 😀 I had planned on buying them for a while, but oh it feels soooooo good.

Interesting idea.....I think I'll hold out a bit longer for a post match "present" celebrating the news!!

oh man, my "to-buy" list is getting freaking long, but I can't bear the thought of buying all this crap and not matching.😱 10 more days to go... :luck:

Just got validated today (1/21/05)....I know it doesn't mean anything, but I guess I can see how Asiandoc felt when she was finally validated, as if they are validating you as a person and all the work you've done haha 🙂 Anyhow, god this waiting sucks!!!

Congrats, even though we've established it is independent of the match! It's still a good feeling, right?

Medical Specialty Aptitude Test

SFAJess said:

Thanks! I just filled it out. Here's what it gave me for my top three:

1) radiology
2) pulmonology
3) gastroenterology

The pulmonology is right on because I'm doing my thesis research on the treatment of tuberculosis and may want to stay in that field when I'm done. Not so sure about the other two though.

SFAJess said:

Thanks, that was really interesting.....apparently I should be in Occupational med or PM&R. On the output page of this thing is it normal to have everything clustered together closely in terms of scores? I had 30 specialties in a 7 pt range. Oh well, interesting to pass the time, thanks SFAJess!

Mine were all clustered together like that too.

Is that at Trudy's Star...the one by campus???

Yep. I will try my best to be there!

Interesting....very interesting....my top three were:

1. opthalmology
2. endocrinology
3. gastroenterology

Weird how it brought up opthalmology when that was my very first and original interest in medicine (why I considered optometry for a while).

I got a tie between plastic surgery and physical medicine/rehabilitation.

Talk about being anal and nitpicky but I went back to the TTU status website and the field where it said 'Interviewed' (since my interview) is now blank.

I wish football was on already so I had something to do...

I actually did the test twice when the link was first posted. 😳 Why? I have noooo idea.

First time:
1) pathology
2) radiology
3) endocrinology

Second time:
1) anesthesiology
2) colon & rectal surgery (not for me!)
3) radiology

I took the test:

1. Thoracic Surgery
2. Nuclear Medicine

Then a 4 way tie for #3:

3. Plastic Surgery
3. Otolaryngology
3. General Surgery
3. Urology

Hmmm... all those surgery subspecialties... I could see that. 👍 I'm not sure where the Nuc Med came from though! 😕

Aptamer said:
I'll be there!

On another note, that test told me I should do urology.

Me too!

1) Peds
2) Dermatology
3) Urology

Is it just me or did the test ask several questions 2 - 3 times?

My top three are"
1- PM&R
2- Derm
3- Colon rectal surgery

I wonder if the diversity has something to do with multiple personalities?!

1. Orthopaedic Surgery (????)

2. OB-GYN (?????????????????)

3. Medical Oncology (Right On!!!!!)

This thread is going down hill. What happened to all my stressed out neurotic whiners?

Mine still says "interviewed". Wonder what that means. Maybe your status has been bumped to "accepted". Nine more long, stressed out days to figure that one out. 🙁

heh. I've done this before:

1. Cardiothoracic surgery
2. medical oncology
3. Gastroenterology. 😕

Just for fun, what was y'alls #36 ranked specialty from the website?

Mine was psychiatry 😀

-tx

wow-mine were all over the place-what do these have in common besides being in medicine?

1 gastroenterology 49
2 allergy & immunology 47
3 endocrinology 46
4 general internal med 46
5 pulmonology 46
6 radiology 46
7 plastic surgery 46
8 nuclear med 46
9 neurosurgery 46
10 neurology 45

#36 Family Practice
