TEXAS Med Schools Entering Class *2005* Applicant Thread part 01

meads--Yah, I understand. It's just that I interviewed at most of the schools in August and September, and I feel like it's been such a long time between my interviews and the match.

lane--Thanks buddy, I'm sure that everyone on this thread finds the idea of a waitlist reassuring! =)

roja--Yes, the multiple acceptances thing is not fair to those who are put on waitlists. I certainly WOULD NOT want to be put on a waitlist, but then again, I feel like the best candidates should be able to feel good about being accepted to multiple schools. I truly admire my fellow SDNers that already hold 5 or more acceptances--it means that they worked hard, and they deserve every bit of their happiness. It may not be "fair," but life is not fair most of the time anyway, right? I'm not going as crazy as some of you guys (yet, anyways), but let me assure you that I had a lot of friends last year who were accepted with stats below mine and everyone else's on this thread. Also, looking at the stats for "accepted Aggies" posted a few weeks back (close to Thanksgiving) renewed my confidence. There were people who matched with 3.15 GPAs and 17 MCATs--I'm so not kidding! And though I hate to admit this, what's meant to be is meant to be. Everything happens for a reason. Truly. 😳

Okay, it's Friday night, and I'm typing on SDN. Going to go find a life now. 😀

Hey Doc, I'm kinda interested in that "accepted aggies" post. Do you have a specific page number that post is on? Thanks!

Post #2915....I printed it out; it's easier to read that way =)

It's been kind of slow around here in this thread. I'm pretty busy, but I like to procrastinate and just check to see if we have any "breaking news" like interview extensions and invites and stuff like that. Well good luck to y'all on finals and completing any end of the year assignments!! :luck:

14 days until I graduate!! Finally, I will be edumacated or something like that! 😀

However, I will be taking courses next spring so I don't have to pay back my loans before med school. I already had a deferrment when I went to Disney World to work. What kinds of classes will y'all be taking in the Spring? Hard loads or easy loads?

I've registered for Yoga, Aerobics, Sign Language, Medical Ethics and Spanish II. I've never had a semester without a science lab. WHOO-HOO!!! I get a break!! 😀

I'm thinking about taking some BS class for the same reason. 😀

OTOH, maybe the loan co.'s will be lenient if we can show that we'll be in med school?

Hrm. Cold y yicky today in HTown.

I graduated last December, and wish that I would have just stayed in school! I'm one of those people who gets bored REALLY easily--gimme something to learn (that's not mindless) and I'll be content. I'm planning on taking 15 hours next semester--one class will be Biochemistry for sure, but the rest will probably be biopsychology, psychology, and/or anthropology classes. The plan is to have a moderately easy last semester at UT.

On another note, I found out today that one of my friends from high school has only received one interview from Texas Tech (April and August MCATer). She's truly a bright girl who wants to be a doctor more than anything. However, she's a horrible test taker (I think it's an anxiety problem), and after taking the MCAT twice, only ended up with a score within the mid-20s. So, while we're all worrying about not getting in with 5 or more interviews, remember that there are people out there who would give anything to have just 2 or 3 more interviews. It's all about perspective (this, of course, goes for my worrying self too).

It's supposed to rain tonight; everybuddy keep warm and dry 😀

Another reason you'll throw a party if you get into school in the (temperate) hill country, eh? (UTHSCSA) 🙂

Yes. Bad weather in the Hill Country beats bad wx in the Greater Paved Swamp anyday.

If I get in, I'll rent a hall and invite everyone. Especially my friends from Austin who love that Frontera music and know some fun-ass bands. :hardy:

Well, it's harder for your friend to get an easy pass to med school, but it's not impossible. That is pretty impressive that she got an interview at Tech, though - a previous poster established that Tech plays the numbers game to decide who gets interviews, so your friend is probably not as bad off as she thinks.

Besides, Texas schools pay attention to reapplicants, so it's not the end if your friend has to reapply (or retake the MCAT - I know current MS1/MS2 who did either one). People on here say places like UTH and UTMB aren't nice to reapplicants, but I know people who reapplied with borderline numbers and got interviews from those 2 schools, as well as other places they didn't expect.

It's pretty late in the game for new TX interviews, sadly, but if your friend REALLY wants to go to Tech, I'm sure she can convince them of her interest. As much as schools don't like to say they only go by numbers and don't care how you rank them, a lot of that is bunk. But all hope is not lost here.

If your friend hasn't finished her Tech interview yet, and she really wants to bolster her chances, she can get another faculty member or advisor to write a letter on her behalf directly to the adcom/ dean saying how much she wants to go there. It is a lot more impressive than writing one herself, and if it arrives before her interview it can be included in her file when the adcom meets for their first decision of whether to accept her or not (which occurs right after the interview). All the new LOR (or more like letter of interest) has to say is that they are writing on her behalf because they know that Tech is her number one choice and she's very committed to succeeding there. It really does impress schools if someone WANTS to go there.

There isn't a assured acceptance in this approach (although I know someone this year who did it, so I'll let you know if it works for her), but it would improve your friend's chances of getting in this year if she put a lot of effort into her Tech interview.

PS - on the devil's advocate side, being a "truly bright" person and "wanting to be a doctor more than anything" don't necessarily mean someone will be a good physician (or even happy in that field). One of my most recent interviewers was both when he was young, and his dad insisted he go to med school. My interviewer got out of medical school, started practicing, and realized he hated it, so went back and got his PhD. Interestingly enough, I didn't even know he had an MD at first, because it was not listed anywhere (he wasn't happy with it?).
This was probably one of the most interesting interviews I've ever had, simply because I got that unique outlook from him. It's too bad there are still so many people who have to choose a career because of their family's expectations. Makes it even sadder because we all want to go into a profession of leaders, and yet some people can't even say no to their parents. ;-P

/oh damn, I left my ranting hat on again... *sigh*
🙄

Heh. No problem, my friend. 👍 And thank you for your well-wishes. Soon enough we'll all be on the other side and we'll know what's up.

What's your first choice?

Oh, and anyone in Houston wanna participate in Toys for Tots? I had the great idea to participate this year, and I'm going to find out on Monday what's involved. I'm going to get my department involved but perhaps we can leverage the power of SDN for those Houton peeps. Thoughts?

The folks in my group at work are going to buy turkeys 'n' such for the food bank. :horns:

So I just got back from my tech interview yesterday and boy did i have an experience 🙂

i woke up super late for the 9 am interview (8:50am) and then to top it all of, i left my cell phone in the taxi cab i rode up to tech!!! 😱

Luckily, i calld up the cab company & told them bout my problem and they later returned my phone back to me when i left for the airport in the evening. 🙂

on a different note, i learned that if you apply to tech through the MD/MBA program, you find out if you got in to both the md & mba program mid-december!!!so, i guess, that kinda helps ease the nail bitin process 😀

They told us late December. I hope they were padding with us. I would snatch up that MD/MBA offer in a heartbeat. It seems like a great program and no extension to the four years 👍

I'm wishing I would have done that now! Good luck to those who apply to this program!! Looks like y'all don't have to wait for too much longer!! :luck:

On another note: I bought an alumni sticker for my car and stuck it on there...I'm two weeks early, but I was just too excited!!! 😀 I'm the first to attend/graduate from college in my family and this is just a HUGE event for us!!

Congrat's SFAJess 😀 I was in that category too. It sure feels good to make that major accomplishment. You realize that the light at the end of the tunnel is truly the sun shining in!

BTW, that is a nice tongue extension you dog has!

I've always been amazed the the Gene Simmons length of tongues by very hot dogs 😱 😕

Thanks guys!!

I took this picture today because he looked so funny! We have this exercise ball and he goes crazy everytime he sees it. The picture was taken after 30 min of attacking the ball so he was panting pretty heavily!

We usually have marines stationed in my office lobby and at our gala in decemeber for toys for tots...should i be looking for the marine with a little frog on his name tag?

nothing against tx...
but, funny to think how cal, #4 in both human polls (while UT is 6 in the AP)...can be left out of a BCS game.

the bcs is the biggest joke i've ever seen in my life.

just got back from the cal vs. so miss game...never thought i'd be so angry AFTER a cal road victory.

But make sure to participate!! 😀

Sorry for the hate, but you know what's sad...I myself hate Cal even more than USC's traditional rivals (UCLA and ND) and I know plenty of my fellow Trojans who feel the same way.

Plus, being from Texas I love UT...and they've been gipped out of a BCS berth at 10 - 1 for like three years now. Its good to finally see them in.

BTW, USC will dominate in Miami 😀 😀 😀 😀

Oh dear Lord I hope so!!

BCS is absolutely worthless... 👎 Almost 50 years and still no return to the Rose Bowl, I am depressed, and pissed 😡 I imagine that managing to screw a bear is difficult if not impossible, as well as life threatening, yet the BCS has succeeded. A round of applause for showing the world that it is in fact possible... Maybe this will at least help convince Rodgers to stay one more year. To the Bears...

you do understand that your school would actually get $ if cal made it to the rose bowl?
do you hate cal that much to where you rather see the Big 12 cash in yet again?

okay other folks who go to UT can hate me but Cal so should've gotten that BCS berth. and if mack brown thinks that this will somehow make me forget that in my four years in school here he has never beaten OU, whatever. beat OU and then people won't talk smack about texas. then maybe instead of having to spend time on TV talking about how classy the cal coach is (agreed) you can actually be doing something much more productive like getting ready for a national championship game. even if we pound michigan, cal should've gotten this BCS berth.

Hi, long-time reader, first-time poster here. It seems like this thread's activity has slowed down so I figured it's the right time for me to ask a new question and get you guys all worked up again about TX schools. So here goes:

I've interviewed at most of the Texas schools and I like UT Houston and Southwestern the best......so now, I'm torn. Reasons for my dilemma:

UT Houston: I like the facilities, I've heard great things about the school, I have friends that go there and LOVE it, and I like that it's in Houston. However, I'm not liking the 8 to 5pm school days, the 20 tests in one week (ok maybe not 20, but it's close to that)....

Southwestern: I also like the facilities, it's ranked very high in the nation, I have friends who go there and like it (no one there told me they LOVED it whereas I had UT Houstoners tell me they LOVED their school). However, I'm not the biggest fan of Dallas, the testing schedule seems stressful and the people not as friendly in general.....

So unless someone else has already posted this question and I missed all the responses (which if that's the case, please point me in the right direction), I would love to hear everybody's input, especially students that attend either of the schools in question.

Good luck to everybody. Hopefully your ranking decision won't be as hard as I think mine is going to be.....

Cal's quaterback needs to stuff a sock in it. I'm tired of hearing him cry about how we made it. Him calling Mack Brown classless for being a little political and asking for votes is rude and annoying. O well, I still hope they rampage tech :meanie:

go where you'll be happy - rankings mean jack when you're studying tirelessly. look at the city, the surrounding area, the people, student facilities, faculty, and (of course) what the current students say about their school. that's what'll help you maintain your sanity, not your school's reputation.

that said, it looks like you'd be happier at UT-H. you may want to sit back and think about it a little more, but that's the impression i got.

begging for votes is classless and a little pathetic.

texas got screwed last year by kansas state but this year cal is the better team.

How is Cal the better team? I've always wondered that. Did they beat UT recently? I wish we could have a playoff for the BCS bowl 🙂

We'll never know whether Cal or Texas is a better team because we have no playoff and the BCS system sucks. So, saying Texas is better or Cal is better is all speculation.

Under the current system, Texas ended up with more BCS points. Under last year's BCS calculation (more weight on computers vs. voters), Texas would have ended up with even more BCS points. Again, this is the system and we have no idea which team is really better without a playoff. So we just live with it. Texas did in 2001 and 2003. USC did in 2003. And now, Auburn and Cal will in 2004. A school always gets short changed.

Maybe Mack shouldn't have asked voters to reconsider Texas. He didn't beg. He asked voters to reconsider their position (similar to requesting an admissions committee to reconsider an application for a med school interview 🙂 ). But I like how he never talked poorly about Cal. Mack has never said anything about Cal, except that he feels like they have a great football team and that they should be playing in a BCS game. Rodgers, on the other hand, has been drinking some hatorade and is openly criticizing Texas and Mack Brown.

yeah i'm gonna need proof that cal is better. don't get me wrong - i have nothing against them and they're a great team. however, no one knows the answer.

i just get annoyed when pissy little quarterbacks can't man up. texas has gotten screwed plenty before, when two teams in your conference are top 5 it's gonna happen.

proof that cal is better? hmmm...While OU was dominating TX (for how many yrs in a row now?), Cal (led by their "pissy" quarterback) outplayed USC in almost every category. the game was decided on the last play of the game (ball slips out of receiver's hands). had we completed the pass in the endzone, we'd most likely be orange bowl bound right now.

tx, on the other hand was not only shut out by OU that day, they also almost lost to arkansas (arkansas fumbled and GAVE you the game), mizzou, and the worst....KANSAS! we will never know for sure who the better team is since tx and cal will never get to play...but you wanted proof? please...

anyways, i'll stop. my blood boils when i think about this...this isn't really about tx because they too deserve to be a bcs team this yr. however, i still say cal is a better team and given the current system, we should be in the rose bowl.

on a sidenote, anyone still hearing from schools about invites for mid dec and early jan slots?!?
=)

hehe alright i'll stop the BCS rant too. and yes, i've got a Tech interview this wednesday, they're still inviting for us slower folk.

thats awesome..congrats...! what date is the invite for? (ie. dec? or jan?)

slower folk...i like that. i wonder if my app was the last to be processed by tmdsas. =(
my school (the one i defended earlier in the BCS discussion..lol) had me in a bind and therefore i was unable to release my transcript until october!...i literally had to sit there and see people apply without being able to do a thing about it...oh well..now..even 1 intv would be nice...

thx thx! oh the invite is for...THIS wednesday as in Dec 8th. I received it a week ago - hooray for last minute flights across the state. Luckily my final exam is Dec 9th...so I didn't have to reschedule.

Are you guys sending thank you notes to the texas schools? Also, what address do we send them to, the admissions address? I looked up my UTSW interviewers, but couldn't find any info for them. If anyone sent UTSW a thank you note, please PM me or respond. Thanks, Pink.

Rock on man, there is no way to figure who is better without a playoff system BUT the problem is this is the first time I've seen a team move down a spot in the BCS not because of the way other games went (i.e. last year kansas st. and oklahoma thus screwmg texas), not because the team lost, but because the team did what it was supposed to do and won (and if the argument is about how they didn't win by a big enough margin....look back at all the games this year that texas won in the last quarter). usc got shafted last year true but that was because they couldn't move up. same applies to auburn this year. only cal has suffered this horrendous injustice of moving down a spot for winning without other games affecting it. mack brown is a fantastic coach. but honestly as a longhorns fan, i want to beat OU. everything else is just gravy.

You make it sound like the 14 mil is split evenly amongst the schools 🙂 Not so. So, a few million going to making the Pac 10 stronger or Cal not going to the Rose Bowl -- well I am a little sad the Rose Bowl won't have a Pac 10 represenative, b/c the Rose Bowl pitting the Pac 10 vs the Big 10 is really a cool tradition. That's my only regret though...I'm not a big Cal fan 😀

The address to send thank you notes for UTSW is at the top of the handout with the faculty interviewer's biographies.

basten, well said!!! cal was one down away from sending the trojans home..(oh wait...the game was at usc)...this could have been a clear path to the orange bowl.

TX gets saved by a late interference call against kansas(!!!) which gives them a second chance...4th and 18, young scrambles for a first down...if you ask me, that is one play away from TX being completely out of the picture (and quite possibly mack brown's job)...i was at the game in hattiesburg on sat. nite. and NEVER, have i seen a set of fans so quiet after their team wins by 10 pts on the road...there is something wrong here...

i hope the bears destroy texas tech in the holiday bowl...although, i feel like the karma police will come and get me...leaving me empty handed..w/o a tech interview...for saying this...=)

Haven't seen this much action on the thread in a few weeks. 🙂 What in the world are we going to talk about once everybody gets over the BCS stuff?
