Texas Tech Class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just FYI, the orientation schedule is up on the schools web page. I am not complaining, but good gosh, 8 days of orientation! I hope they try to make it as enjoyable as possible. If nothing else lets hope we can wear shorts and t-shirts. Oh well, let the fun begin.

Also, some of the days during orientation require you to bring your laptop so if you haven't gotten yours yet you might want to.

Hey guys. I was wondering if they have told you which campus everyone will be at yet? Did most people get their first choice? I am really considering Tech, and since a lot of my family is in the Panhandle, I would really love to go to Amarillo. Thanks for any insight you might be able to provide.

JAMP, they informed us about a month ago where everyone was headed. I don't recall the stats but I believe that it was something like 83% got ther first choice and 97% got there second choice. Nobody ended up with their third choice. Once again these stats may be off. You might check back through past posts on this thread. I thought i recalled someone posting the actual stats. Hope this helps.

Thank you. Also, what are some advantages/disadvantages you are aware of, when it comes to training in Amarillo?

Not everyone. They are still matching some people, but it would be good to call if you have not received yours yet.

You still haven't found out? That's crazy. Did they give you any hope of when they may let you know or where you may be going? Did you ask to stay in Lubbock? You have a house are married (w/kids if I remember correctly) there should be no question you would end up where you wanted, esp. in Lubbock.

I don't know much about Amarillo, but the big selling point is that Amarillo doesn't have a surgery residency program. That means the med students get ample of opportunities to get their hands bloody and perform some things that most other students don't get the luxury of doing. That's all I have heard in regards to positives.

Chalklette, maybe you could elaborate on things you do or don't like about El Paso. I have heard very polarized viewpoints about the city--either people love it or absolutely hate it.

I was late getting some info to them as they could not seem to get my new address correct. I'm sure I will be placed in Lubbock and if not, I get a chance to petition during second yr. My wife may want to move away for residency (I don't) and if Tech were to force someone in my position to pack up and move the whole family; I would likely transfer. Tech isn't like that though and will do everything to help you.

That reminds me, i've been meaning to ask what kind of laptops people are buying or planning to bring with them. I'm trying to figure out whether to go for mobility, sacrificing some performance, and how important things like battery life are going to be. Has anyone bought the bundles from that dell deal? I emailed the tech support people to see if they knew exactly what we'll be needing the laptops for, but i haven't heard anything back yet. Anyone know?

I bought a Dell but not one of those bundles that Tech offered...i got an inspiron 600m and i think it meets all the requirements that tech asked for...i got pentium M cuz it makes the laptop lighter...i'm assuming that i may have to take it class often.

I got a Dell Inspirion 600M as well. It is the most bang for the buck, atleast that's what I was told. I talked to a tech guy at Dell, and he said some of the software that is included on those bundles that TTU put together, Dell doesn't even offer anymore. I created my own computer getting everything that I could possibly think of that I may use in the next couple of years, plus making sure it's compatible for any future upgrades that may be around the corner. It is supposed to weigh in around 5lbs if my memory serves me correctly. If that's the case it has got to be the heaviest 5lbs I have ever felt. Reminds me of Organic days when I lugged around 4 books just for that one class. Definitely the reason for my ever reoccuring back problems. Yea, I wouldn't consider going with anything bigger. I couldn't imagine having to lug it around nor am I looking forward to lugging this "compact/lightweight" one around.

Are you the Priya I took TPR with?

Anyway, I have an older Expiron 2650 that is a boat, but meets/exceeds everywhere but in ram. I will probably not upgrade as I cannot forsee needing any more than 125k for med school.

I don't know...I took TPR in Houston over the summer...but I did undergrad in Austin. Where did you take it?

Speaking of phone service. Are most of you getting DSL or some other type of high speed internet? If so, who are you going with and do they offer any kind of special rate for internet and long distance? Thanks

I'm game. Been here since last fall.....

What do you think of the 'pre-orientation' assignment? Not a terrible read, but I don't see it being very helpful. Yes, I know I'm a dork for asking this question 🙁

I was wondering when this would come up. My thoughts exactly!

It's a "How to Study", guide book patterened after your "personality/attitude" thing"y", or something like that. You answer a couple of questions that tell you who you are, personality wise, and how you more than likely are apt to study. Then they take that and relate it to various practice reading assignments and show you how to approach things in med school. Now granted I have been on page 20 for the last 3 weeks. It's not a hard read, I am just living up every last minute possible before matriculation. My explanation maybe somewhat, if not totally off. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

So where did you guys hear that it was an assignment? I'm looking for it right now, and can't see it anywhere.

Are the authors kornhauser and enerson?

man i never did that assignment; i think they ask u to turn in ur personality so just go to the page where they list the personaly letters IBJE, etc... and pick one.

I wouldnt waste time on this assigment; enjoy this time and get ur books and stuff ready.

They ask you to do specific things this yr and have it handy for orientation. We get 2 credits for orientation which is new this yr as well. I don't know if this relates. I read the book and found it iteresting, but didn't do the bubble diagrams. I just don't see it working for me. I'm an ENTJ which means I'll be good for the first 2 yrs then turn into a jackass for 3, 4 and residency beacase I can't feel :scared: We'll see..... I don't think I'll have to wait two yrs to be a jackass.

Do you guys have all your old shot records (for immunizations). I don't have any records and haven't done anything yet. I have had all of these and got any/all boosters to volunteer at the children's hospital last yr. Anyone else in this position. I should probably call tomorrow......

I just got my Tet/Dip shot yesterday because I could't find documentation of the one I had in 99. I also just recently got the Hep B titer done. Luckily work paid for both of these. I am still searching for documentation for the Mumps. As for all the others, I guess I still need to do them. I would do it here in Dallas before I leave, but I doubt they can get me the results before I move out there Sunday. I recall the Health Science Center saying that we can have the Rubella, and Varicella titers done there. So much to do and so little time.

Anybody know what the dress code is for orientation events? There's nothing specified, but I always tend to be that guy in flip flops at formal occasions. My grad school required shirt & tie for our 1st couple days so I'm wondering if Tech is the same...

Dress code is NO t-shirts, no flip flops and no hats.

That is the only guidence that I received from the Student Affairs office.

They did send something out a while back that said men were to be business casual (khaki's/shirt) and women were to wear dresses?

I haven't taken care of any of the shots. Guess I'll do it this week and next.

See you all tomorrow morning. Don't be shy 😛 Say Hi!
