The list of respected DO Schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
in 5 years I'd expect OUCOM to be considered the best DO school in the nation.

Thats a good possibility considering what they are doing with Cleveland Clinic, I wouldn't be surprised. The differences between these 3 schools I mentioned aren't that significant. But seriously if you ignore tuition rates (msucom), being indebted to a state for a certain amount of years (ex. ouhcom), etc. These are the top 3. Right now though, the best is MSU hands down. I have friends who went to various DO schools around the country, WesternU, Nova, DMU, and they ALL say that their professors all have lots of respect for MSUCOM for many reasons. It has the highest quality of education, no doubt.

msucom, umdnj, ouhcom >> tcom. TCOM is good, just not in the same class as these 3 imo.

TCOM had over 40 million research dollars last year, more than many allo schools, has ties with a number of quality hospitals, is about the only osteo school to be US News ranked, has the lowest tuition in the country, and always puts out one of the best osteo match lists every year (also has the highest percentage of AGME matches). It may be the flagship osteopathic school...

I heard that lots of the hospitals they were affiliated with got shut down a while back. Isn't that why they tried to lobby to create an allo school? It was because they had a hard time getting rotations for their students.e Infrastructure wise not even comparable to MSUCOM (big 10 school), OUHCOM.

TCOM is the only osteo school to be US News ranked? Since when? MSUCOM was like #7 a few years back and im 100% sure its still in the top20 but those rankings are 100% BS and should not be used to assess the quality of a school, anyways.

And yeah TCOM has a huge ACGME match rate probably because it barely has any osteo residencies compared to MSUCOM and OUHCOM. I look at this as a weakness. This is exactly why MSUCOM and OUHCOM should be rated so highly, because the schools have their sh** together and don't have to rely on the ACGME to train their graduates. They each have enough residencies to support their graduates and then some. When you have the cream of the crop of AOA residencies, why go ACGME when you will be discriminated against in certain specialties anyways? This is somewhat a subjective opinion, but I would argue that MSUCOM, OUCOM graduates could get just as many ACGME residencies as TCOM, they don't because they don't have to. 🙂

Not trying to hate on TCOM, it's a great school and certainly top tier. But it's not on the same level as the others mentioned, and DEFINITELY not better.

I think there are like 3 or 4 DO schools on par with MD.

MSUCOM (the best)
OUCOM (a bit less so, but great if you stay in Ohio)
CCOM (lots of hospitals and they have 83 percent first choice match rate)
Maybe DMU or Pcom

These schools seem to be very respected and have hospital connections on par with MD schools

whoa...you can't forget about TCOM. It's highly respected in TX and alot of their students go the ACGME route instead of AOA.

There are good aoa programs out there, so just keep that in mind.

...no Rodney Dangerfield memes? I'm not impressed. 😛

if you were to take a poll, i bet most current do students would say tcom is among the top three.
a friend at a texas md school told me texans treat tcom as "their" do school and there is high regard for it. tcom students are no slouches - tmdsas rules such as no grade replacement probably help enforce quality - and they've always had great rotations e.g. john peter smith et al. i heard there used to be an osteo hospital next door but it was crappy and tcom didn't use it much, in fact they bought it and tore it down. so yeah, this is the first time i've heard anywhere that tcom had trouble getting rotations.
90% of tcom students are texans who probably want to live in texas which is why they sit out the aoa match. btw tcom has been #1 in comlex pass rate for years so it's not like they can't handle comlex. plus they have a solid record of matching acgme, esp in texas.
there are not many other do schools that have 30+ alumni teaching at ut southwestern, or presiding over their state medical board.

Lots of people miss TCOM's reputation. I think TCOM to be on par with many MD schools easily. In Texas they pretty much have the same avg GPA/MCAT as the other schools except UTSW and Baylor..They secure pretty good residencies every year, have lots of money, research, cheap, awesome rotation sites (close to one of meccas of healthcare -Houston and other flagship programs (UTSW) etc...pretty respectable. I think of TCOM as top five or better.

I personally would rank TCOM and ATSU-SOMA (just because I can definitely related to the CHC thing they have going on)

DRMediterranean:
I think you miss the obvious, many TCOM students prefer ACGME matches because they can actually get into them, not because of lack of AOA residency spots. I mean, not that matching AOA is bad, but ACGME is just more competitive. In support of my point is that inside sources (maybe you can even find it online) is the fact that the avg USMLE 1 is on par with ALL TX schools and better than many out-of-state MD programs. Also look up COMLEX mean scores for TCOM online and see what you find -let me summarize it for you: #1 nationally. I believe TCOM is on par, hands down, with the other schools you mentioned. And I mean hands down.

I agree with this, but it will eventually be MSUCOM = OUCOM for the first spot.
As an Ohio resident, everything about OUCOM looks great...but I found Athens to be a dismal area and couldn't see myself living there. However, saving 80k over the course of 4 years (more if you factor in cost of rent and interest) would certainly have been welcomed.

TCOM is an MD school that awards the DO degree. In Texas it is pretty much considered on par with most of the medical schools and the programs in Texas are pretty kind to them, so there simply is no incentive to not match ACGME.

I'd put KCUMB, KCOM, and OSU on there is well.

Can't really argue that DMU has better hospital affiliations than KCUMB and KCOM since they all use the MSU-Com and OUCOM systems.

Actually, can i tell you what school I have been more impressed with the more and more I keep reading about them? LECOM.

Now, defininly not close to MD caliber as only a couple DO schools IMO can really be compared to MD schools, but le com has impressed me with their resources. Many sites in many different areas.

Of course, when you have three campuses, u should be able to provide support like that.

And OSUCOM maybe, tho I am less inclined to think so. Honestly I don't know much about TCOM. Texas schools have tiger own thing going on.

Like I said before, no ones knows what a debusk is. Everyone has heard of MSU or OU. We need more state DO schools that can provide students resources, not these private ones.

I have no idea why this thread is even a topic of discussion. DO schools as a whole are not respected, who cares who is the most respected out of the least respected? Seriously, and this is coming from a DO student.

Agree/Disagree. MSUCOM is a very respected DO school. Same with OU but less so. Like I said CCOM and MAYBE one of the other private schools.

MSUCOM is my first choice of any Med school, MD or DO

Lol wow.... Saddest thing is that you are do student yourself...

If I go DO I would never say things like that... You seriously should reconsider keep going to DO school.

It's barely worth the comment, but I'll say it- you obviously have no clue. Overstatements like this ruin your credibility and add nothing to any discussion

I say again, wait until you guys are actually DO students and are applying for away rotations/residency and realize the full extent of how screwed DOs are in general. Some places require extra tuition out of us for away rotations, others only take an x number of DO students, still others just won't even accept DO students. Then, does it really f'ing matter if you went to what you perceive to be a "respected" DO school?

Talk to me in a couple of years, otherwise, continue to debate what you perceive to be respected DO schools.

Somehow, I am not surprised that those talking smack are pre-med and thus have no clue.

But you're the only one talking smack. 😕 Nobody else is saying the other schools suck. They're just saying schools like MSU and TCOM are just about equivalent to MD.

Listen, you always make an appeal to authority, just because you are a med student. Guess what, no one cares. It gives you no more credibility, or knowledge on this subject, so get a different debate tactic.

Im sorry you regret your life decisions. I'm sorry that feel insecure...but we don't care.

Many of us, me included, know DOs who are happy with life. DOs match in great residencies each year. Maybe your options suck because your grades and boards suck. We don't know and frankly again, don't care.

Nice attempt at a personal attack mate. My board scores are excellent, my class rank excellent, it does not take much to search my history to figure it out, but if you are curious here are my stats to show your assumptions are ridiculous. USMLE 250 COMLEX 732 Class rank 3/75. My concern is not for myself.

Also, you would be wise to listen to those who are further along the path than you. You can choose to believe whatever the hell you want to, I could care less, but do not claim you were not forewarned.

If you have something legitimate to say by all means say it, otherwise go skulk someplace else until you have more life experience to make a real judgement.

This is interesting insight...I've heard others talk about LECOM as well. I'll have to look into that school more.

And I agree...more state schools. I feel like that adds integrity and, like you said, better resources for their students.

Like I mentioned before they all have their advantages/disadvantages. LECOM is far from the top though, if you look at satisfaction, match, etc. CCOM, UMDNJ, KCUMB (of course), WesternU, TCOM, PCOM, UNECOM are all great schools. That said, if you don't like the school then it'll be a long four years.

KCUMB Class of 2016

When people think of the NATIONAL DO "powerhouses" they don't think of OU, UMDNJ, OSU, TCOM, etc, they think of PCOM, CCOM, KCUMB, KCOM, DMU, etc. And that is unfortunate, because the state schools have far more resources at their disposal than the old private DO schools to help advance the profession and become the national players.

Basically, I just feel like the state schools have been in a position over the past 30-40 years to really put the DO degree in the national spotlight, but have fallen short partly due to their very strong regional focuses (i.e., on serving their state with PCP's more so than on becoming the best medical schools in the nation).

Are you at RVU?

He's the DO student at PNWU who had a nurse/CRNA as a preceptor on his surgery rotation. He reported it to the allo forum in this famous post. It sounds like he is regretting his DO school choice and generalizing his frustration to include all DO schools.

Truth, but also learning that my experience is not just applicable to me. So, yes generalizing, but also im not far off from the truth.

Are there other rotations where this kind of stuff is happening?

DO students not being allowed in the hospital for deliveries during their OB/GYN rotation....Word to the wise, look into the quality of the clinical rotations, the first 2 years are generally the same everywhere, its the clinical rotations that really matter.

BTW congrats looking at my post history and making a new account just to post on it! Wow!

I've never heard of any of this.....geez.....

Apparently there was competition between schools for access to the hospital. Look into this **** before you matriculate, not just the generic pre-med questions of "how many students per cadaver" in anatomy lab, that kind of thing doesnt bloody matter. You don't want to be 400k in debt and realize you got screwed along the way.

Unfortunately, I doubt you would be able to find such information without student feedback like yours. Im sure cases like this are few and far between but it is still alarming. I'm still applying DO but will be checking more closely on 3rd year.

Aye I sincerely hope it is few and far between, but if I can help a few pre-meds look into this before they matriculate than my job here is done.

Seriously that's some BS. I would pis**d. But honestly I still don't think your experience at PNWU necessarily represents the majority of osteopathic schools. I would bet an MD student out there somewhere could have dealt with the same stuff and maybe even worse. Its def important to look into the clinical years when choosing a school.

Aye it likely doesn't, but still keep your eyes open and look out for yourselves. Once you matriculate, many schools know they have you for the full duration, its not like you can transfer. So look into this stuff before you commit.

The lesson is. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!! Its ur future so make sure u are in the right situation to succeed.

Truth, but also know which questions to ask. Research this as it is a huge freakin deal and likely will cost you half a million in the end.
