Hi. I got a 36P this April with a 4.0 BCPM and probably like a 3.9 overall. I've got volunteering and clincal experience as paid intern in my dad's office plus I did Crew. No research. I'm instate Indiana so I was just gonna apply Early Decision there but I'm wondering what schools I would have a good shot at. Thanks for any help.

Apply to

Wisconsin Madison
U of Chicago
UIC
Northwetern U
U of Michigan Ann Arbor,

and other semi-top-tier schools. I think you have pretty good chance of getting into above schools.

All of them. You'll have a decent shot everywhere, so pick any schools that look like good places to you... just make sure you grab some safety schools as well.

i'm a chinese-canadian
planning to study in the states, and workin in the states (i loathe our health care system), tuition is not an issue

undregrad: u of toronto, gpa: around low 3.7x (don't know yet)
grad: columbia university, going next year for a one year master program in biotechnology (just for the heck of it, i love stuff related to biotech and one year in new york should be fun)
mcat: 37N, only score, breakdown: 14P, 10V, 13B

EC: i paint a lot (mostly landscape and scenary) since junior high, amateur photography since senior high (using film slr, not the point and shoot digi photographer), play piano occasionally (for my local church or jam with friends, gr9 level), 500 volunteer hrs at a WWII veteran ward at the local hospital (currently a volunteer team leader), 1 yr research (topic is designer organism, trying to mess with drosophila morphology, not enough data to publish yet), consultant for my school's premed society for a couple years, founding member and creative director of my program alumni association (i established a scholarship for the program haha), mentor for 2 years, moderator for the program's forum (1000+ members) for a year, website designer/ transportation coordinator/ program coordinator for a community fellowship with 200+ members for 2 years, worked as a massage/chinese medicine therapist assistant for 2 years (i know how to perform basic acupunture now),

i think my gpa would probably kill me if i apply to schools like yale or harvard
but should i give it a shot?

What are my chances:

My breakdown is 7VR, 8PS, and 9BS = 24R. My GPA is 3.95 overall, 3.9 for my 1st major (Biology) and 4.0 for my 2nd major (English). I have done research for 2.5 years including participating in a summer undergraduate research program. I've volunteered throughout my college career, mostly clinics but also hospital. I've shadowed 4 MD's and 1 DO. I'm also a teaching assistant for an upperlevel science course for the past two years and serve as a college tutor. I think my recommendations are good (who knows, really?)I live in Texas and given my MCAT score, I don't think I have any chance at an out-of-state med school anyway.

I've already sent out my applications to DO schools as well as pretty much all the Texas med/osteo schools that are participating in the TMDSAS. Did I just waste my money or do I have a chance at some interviews? 'Cause at this stage, I just want an interview somewhere ...

there are the obvious drexel, rfu, etc. but i want to advise you to strike wake forest off your reach list. they're hugely into undergraduate GPA's, so you'll likely get rejected based on the 3.1 and their formula. They're nice enough to reject such candidates pre-secondary, but why waste the $40?

Thanks, exactly the kind of thing I need to know. Maybe I should say more: what schools will hate my GPA and not get over it. (possibly rightfully so although I have changed, haha, sounds like I'm in court or something)

Yeah, but I looked and you applied hella late. Other than the L writing (don't know how much that matters, maybe makes up for the .2 GPA difference) we're quite the same. Thinking about doing the Georgetown program as well. best of luck to ya I'm sure you'll do well. August MCAT, right, thats why you applied late.

its in the pacific league, same as the saints and all. I'm off the roster right now after being abroad for 7 mo's. You play at all? Perhaps amature is the better term, dunno, but people hear amature and assume rec, or co-ed on a wednsday night. (nothing wrong with that, just alot different)

i had similar stats to you (high mcat/low gpa), so you can check out my mdapps profile to see where i applied/interviewed etc. It's in my signature. also, don't bother with any state schools where you're not a resident. especially wisconsin. to get into most state schools as a non-resident, you need to be stellar in your gpa too, not just your mcat.

as far as DO schools, try it if you want. based on my experience with my own application, i think you have a good shot at an MD acceptance, though.

nice thread... I have a 3.05 and there is some nice advice in here, I hope this does not get merged in to the WAMC thread obscurity

Hi.. after getting my mcat score... I was upset but sort of accepted it since then. I just need some advice on where do I sort of stand a fighting chance...

I am a Canadian (So international or out-of-state for American schools... 29 is too low for CND schools anyways)..

~3.69 GPA

and decent ECs...

so anyone, especially Canadians studying in U.S., your help will be appreciated.

Also can someone explain or maybe have a link to explain what are these secondery apps...

I, for one, think that the fourth (or fifth?) year in college makes a world of difference. Getting out in three years makes you look like you were just in college to get to med school, which, if true, is silly. What difference does one year make, when you have the rest of your life to be a doctor?

I toally agree, that fourth year also helps you mature a great deal. I've *heard* but don't know how true it is that taking a year off can even help you if you get a job in some type of medical field or masters program to prove even more that this is really what you want to do. Don't rush the best years of your life! Have fun!

Im no expert, but in the same boat as you. From what I've heard (I have 3.1, 34S) it is of some worth to really carpet bomb early your apps. You have a shot, albiet small (as do I) but if the PS and EC's are great, some research and all, you got a chance. Again, alot relies now on EC's and other things to even put you as competative. But don't give up, eh?

Good luck with your applications.

PS 11, VR 13, BS 10 S
Read the whole Kaplan book and take good notes
Chem and Bio double major
Read alot of scientific americans
read some nature/cell/NEJM articles
Read books like its your job inbetween all this
Oh, and be sober for a good 6 weeks before the test
Sleep really well the night before
That helps with the VR and writing. I kinda freaked out on the PS and BS and didn't finish either, which is why the scores wern't as good.

OH, AND ANYONE WANNA READ MY PS, PM ME!!!

Unless you count work experience (Controls "Engineering" then into Systems Administration for past 6 years). I have worked for a small pre-clinical pharma research company for the past 4 years, but as I said I'm doing Systems Administration.

North Carolina resident
~3.1 GPA (BS, 1997, Applied Science from UNC-CH)
MCAT: 35P (12PS, 11VR, 12BS)
No clinical experience...
No research experience...
No volunteering...

Am I totally screwed for this cycle with the lack of ECs and low GPA? I suppose I take a year off and get my ECs in order, but I really want to start ASAP. I think I'd rather go FMG MD than put off starting school. Will a 35P get me into SABA or SGU with no ECs? Does being out of school and in the work force for 9 years help me? Hurt me?

I'm honestly at a complete loss as to what to do. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

The truth is that without some good EC's to supplement for your GPA it will be difficult. Your MCAT score is spectacular, congrats on that. But, I would get some experience volunteering and in research and apply next year. This is my advice, but I would like to hear what other people say also.

ashlar said:

Here are the reasons why it's a bad idea to apply to medical school without any of the above:

1) How do you know you want to become a doctor? Seriously, you should evaluate this. Although pretty much all pre-meds have a romanticized conception of what medicine is like, almost all of those who matriculate have extensive volunteer/clinical experience.
2) What are you going to talk about in your medical school interviews? How are you going to convince your interviewers you want to become a doctor?
3) What are you going to write about in your personal statement? You'll need compelling reasons to enter the field of medicine.

I would advise you to not apply this year, take some time to get some extracurricular activities under your belt, and apply next year. Good luck! :luck:

All very good points and thanks to everyone that replied. I had always planned to go to med school until undergrad burnout derailed those plans. It was only in January of this year that I decided that I wasn't too old to go back. The MCAT combined with a full-time job kept me from getting any meaningful ECs since January. So it sounds like everyone is reinforcing my belief that I should probably take a year to get things sorted. That said, does it hurt me in any way for next years cycle if I go ahead and try applying this year? I have no doubt that if I waited until next year I could get into a "better" school, but school rankings are of little concern to me so long as I get into a good residency. I may be simply wasting money by applying this year, but that's a chance I'm willing to take so long as it doesn't hurt me in the (admittedly, very likely) chance that I don't get in.

I think you have a good chance at McGill; Saskatchewan, I don't know their policy on international students (unless you are a citizen). You stats are good, but I don't know how the O is WS will fair because that is taken into more consideration at Canadian schools than US schools. As for the rest of the schools on your list, I don't know.

I guess I will do this too, my profile is in my signature.

I wanna join in on this...shameless jacked from my other thread:

State of Residence: TX
Applying in 2007-08 cycle

Undergraduate Institution: University of Texas at Austin

Overall GPA: 3.83
BCPM GPA: 3.8
Major: Electrical Engineering
Baylor College of Medicine SMART program (summer research)
1+ years of bioinformatics research at the same lab,
International conference publication and poster presentation (2nd Author)
Volunteering for 1 year at a local hospital
Volunteering for 1 year at a local orphanage
Undergraduate tutor for engineering students
Undergraduate research fellowship recipient
Summer Internship at National Instruments doing hardware research and development
University Honors
Study Abroad in China
But here's the kicker:
August 2005 MCAT: 32Q (12/9/11) but...
April 2006 MCAT: 30Q (10/10/10)

DREAM:
Stanford, JHop, Duke, Harvard

Want to apply:
UT-Southwestern (#1 choice)
Baylor (probably considered a reach/dream school with my mcat score)
UT-Houston
Other TX meds

So basically...what are my chances? And should I retake the MCAT? (That 30 came as the biggest suprise of my life 🙁 and I am applying in the 07-08 cycle)

Hi guys,

Please look at my MDapplicants profile below and give me a little feedback.

Stellar MCAT and excellent extracurriculars/clinical experience offset your GPA...You should be good to go 🙂
