The Official June 21, 2014 MCAT thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats!! I got 7s on my last three TPR PS sections and 9 on AAMC 8 and AAMC 10 this past week, so now am pretty much completely terrified 🙂 Basically praying for an 8 or 9 at this point, no matter the difficulty of the section, since AAMC 10 wasn't even that bad.

yep.... but to be fair I'm stopping in my hometown for the night , so the testing site will only be 3.5 hours away.

Could some of you tell me how you improved your VR scores say from 7 and 8 to 10 perhaps ? Appreciate it. Thanks! Yes I am doing TPR VW and EK101. So by doing those two consistently, will the scores improve?

med candidate, I'm actually using just GS to prepare to take more AAMCs. I was scoring 28 and 29 when I started GS, so now I'm trying to see if it will make an improvement for the AAMC's. I have 3 AAMC's left to take: 8,10, and 11. I will take them on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday respectively. But for now, just doing my GS tests. Just did GS 9. Wow, that PS was difficult.... 10/9/11.
I really think GS PS and BS are REALLY great since they are really difficult, and feel as difficult as the real deal, PS especially.

First off stop using EK101... Idk why people love it I gave up after Test 10 because it was just way too absurd and unlike the real deal.
Second I think you should try reading the passage as if you are interested and looking for the main idea.. connecting paragraphs to the thesis. When answering the question pick the least wrong answer.. going str8 to the answer will land you in a trap. And learn when to give up on a question.

Thanks bro. I appreciate your response. And u are right. The basic problem with me is 'interest'. I have to somehow create that mindset when reading passages.....

im actually prepared for a hard PS. Just too GS PS 9, the hardest PS test I ever took, got a 10...phew that was INSANE.
Saxappeal.....good job on foraging through those GS exams. I am sure they will be useful in the real deal.....

Hey guys,

I'm a June 21st retaker. I want to take three more tests in addition to the ones I've taken so far which are:

AAMC #8: 36 (13,12,11)
AAMC #9: 36 (11,13,12)
TPR #1: 31 (10, 11, 10)
TPR #3: 32 (12,9,11)
AAMC #10: 35 (13,10,12)

*all AAMC tests are retakes from last year but I don't remember anything!

I want to take 3 more tests but can't decide on which ones. From what I've read the GS PS section is a pretty good indicator of the actual PS which is supposed to be harder. Do you guys have any suggestions on which GS test to take?

Thanks and good luck to everyone studying!

not really sure haha

I've been kinda freaking out reading about the super hard PS recently (which seem to be a little more quantitative) so just something to simulate that I guess

the verbal and bio sections are most similar to aamc #10 and 11 from what i've heard so I think that should be enough practice for me but I just don't want to be surprised or caught off guard during test day

practicing goes well.. right now Im doing the AAMC self assesments and doing the last two AAMCs next week.. im getting to a point where I feel like I cant do much except finish these last few things

Damn bro can I have your Verbal scores?? That's consistently my weak spot and I don't know how to improve. What's your strategy?.

holy macro!......14s in verbal. How did you get there ? What did you do for VR? I am taking it on 07/02 and stuck on single digits....8 or 9....

Verbal has always been my strongest point (I originally wanted to go to law school so I suffered through many practice LSAT exams so that probably helps. LSAT verbal passages are much harder and more convoluted. If you can get your hands on any of that material I think it would prepare you for anything the MCAT verbal could throw at you). But my general approach is to read the questions first (not the answer choices) and then highlight anything that might pertain to those questions. While reading the passage I try to ge tan overall idea of the author's tone/attitude of the subject. If the passage has any direct retrieval questions, I attack those as I get to them in the passage to avoid having to re-read that section again. By doing this I can usually narrow the choices down to the either the correct one or down to two. If there are two left, I've found that it is usually not the straight forward answer that is credited, but the convoluted, almost wishy-washy one but it also answers it slightly better than the straight forward one.

My big problem was physics. When I took it, my professors gave us equation sheets. Love the idea at the time but now I wish I would have been made to memorize them then. I'm fine with everything but electrical stuff.

Hm, I wish I had known about GS sooner. I have 2 more test days scheduled before the real deal and I don't know if I should just substitute one AAMC for a GS. I score 10+ for PS in AAMC, but I don't know if that means my score will drop on the real thing if its more difficult.

I took AAMC9 and yet again, my score jumped about 5 points from last time. This instability is freaking me out. Like it shows I'm capable of getting 30+, but if I freak out during the actual test, I could possibly get something in the mid-20s, and I don't want that.

With less than 2 weeks to go, I'm gonna force myself to improve verbal. I haven't broken 10+ on verbal yet. Hopefully 1 week will be enough to bump my score up by 1 point or so. Meh.

Man those GS physical science exams are no joke. Hoping they prepare me for those wtf passages on the real deal.

I feel pretty good, just got a 30 (10/9/11) on GS 10. God, I know that GS PS and BS are supposed to be hard, but GS 8-10 are just insane, especially GS 9.

So I guess it makes my test scores the following:
GS2: 27, 9/9/9 (took about a month and a half ago)
GS 3: 30 11/9/10
GS 4: 29 9/9/11
GS 5: 31 11/9/11
GS 6: 30 11/9/10
GS 7: 29 9/9/11
GS 8: Will take tomorrow
GS 9: 31 10/10/11
GS 10: 30 10/9/11
GS Average: PS=10, VR (which was mostly EK verbal since it was more indicative, the GS VR weren't really all that helpful)=9, BS= 10.5.
Also, had these AAMC's from about a month and a half ago;
AAMC 5: 28 10/9/9
AAMC 9: 29 11/10/8 (bombed this one, had a lot of my then weaknesses on it)
AAMC 8: Will take Sunday
AAMC 10: Will take Tuesday
AAMC 11: Will take Thursday

doesn't appear to be any consensus over the june 13 exam today on which section was difficult
maybe that's a good thing

just took aamc 10 today.. 36 (14, 10, 12) a bit below my average but mostly frustrating at verbal. thought I did well, but it's always hit or miss. going into the last week my scores are:

kaplan 1 - 37 (14, 11, 12)
kaplan 2 - 41 (14, 13, 14)
kaplan 3 - 37 (14, 10, 13)

aamc 3 - 32 (11, 9, 12) (before studying)
aamc 4 - 40 (14, 13, 13)
aamc 5 - 35 (13,10,12)
aamc 7 - 40 (15, 13, 12)
aamc 8 - 38 (14, 10, 14)
aamc 9 - 39 (15, 12, 12)
aamc 10 - 36 (14, 10 , 12)

probably gonna take aamc 11 next week, and until then do some more kaplan exams. what do people think of the self assessments? i have them so i might do them too

Even though I'm proud of my progress, hard work and test scores (especially since I got a 23 on my real test last time with test scores in that area)... Damn catchmoresun lol

i like i don't even know how to study this last week. whats everyones game plan besides take a practice exam or two?

The rest of the time for me is actually pretty specifically divided:
Today: Review GS 10. Then, study bio , with light physical studying at the end of the day.
Tomorrow: Review Bio/physics/gen chem, then take GS 8. Review GS 8. Light studying, sleep early.
Sunday: Wake up 6 AM, do my test day routine, take AAMC8 at 8 am, lunch break, review AAMC 8. Another break. Study Bio weaknesses. Then study PS weaknesses.
Monday: Study BS weaknesses/ PS weaknesses. Sleep early.
Tuesday: Wake up 6 AM, do my test day routine, take AAMC 10 at 8 am, lunch break, review AAMC 10, another break. Study bio weaknesses, then study PS weaknesses.
Wednesday: Study PS weaknesses/ BS weaknesses. Sleep early.
Thursday: Wake up 6 AM, do my test day routine, take AAMC 11. Lunch break, review AAMC 11. Take 6 hour break. Study BS/PS weaknesses until bed, moderately.
Friday: NO STUDYING. Might catch a movie in the morning. Then, gonna drive to the testing town, get a hotel. sleep early.
Saturday: Wake up 545 AM, eat breakfast, study weaknesses/ brush lightly over all of the topics, then DOMINATION!

What is your Test Day Routine, if I may ask ? Also, I must say good job on those GS exams. Yes, those are hard, but everything considered - a very good practice....

I don't think you need SA's. I think you are good. Relax....

advice from someone who took it today - the PS is harder than the AAMCs (as expected considering what i had been reading around the forums lately), but that being said, focus on your weak content areas until you've mastered them, especially bio (i highly suggest videos, be it kahn or chad's). every single thing counts, and 1 question in each section could be the difference between a 28 and a 31. there was a question i got right because of something i memorized in the car literally after arriving at the test center. put in the effort now to save yourself from putting in 3 or 4 times that for a retake because of the accumulation of a few small gaps in your knowledge.

Heyall, can some one explain why this question is wrong ? Like I get that both are primary amines but arnt they both aromatic too?

no.. aromatic amines have nitrogen that is directly bonded to aromatic ring..only aniline does that ...In benzylamine, nitrogen is directly bonded to carbon which is bonded to aromatic ring, therefore benzylamine isn't an aromatic amine.

thanks, in other words, it is aromatic, but not an aromatic amine, aah the little stuff

What exactly was hard about it? Too much calculation or hard to understand?

difficult passages and there were a few just very conceptual questions where you didn't have to calculate anything but understand the equation (they didn't give you number answers, just symbols). also, there was a unit no one seemed to have ever heard of before (check the thread, maybe 1 person so far knew what it was), but after googling it and looking back, it was something where if you just guessed the most logical answer you got it right. it was defo closest to #11 (which i got an 11 in), but a bit harder.

Just took GS 5 and got 12 on PS and 11 on BS but the raw scores were a 42/52 on PS and 37/52 on BS so is the curve on GS a lot more forgiving? Especially since according to the AAMC scale those scores would be a 10 and a 9 respectively?

And I agree with you guys who don't know what to do this last week! It happened last year for me as well but all I've done today is take those two sections and watch the World Cup for the rest of the day!
