What about it did you like specifically?

I specifically liked the inter-professional collaboration and the faculty. Everyone at the campus seemed very happy and all the schools had lunch in the same area and professors were there too talking to students. The faculty was super nice and again super chill with all students there and having lunch with each other. The campus is also soooo nice

So apparently my friends at Nova are telling me there's a huge cheating scandal that went down recently. Where the D3 and 4's involved have been suspended or possibly expelled, and that the curriculum has become unnecessarily difficult as a consequence. Crazy lol. Can anyone confirm this? Don't wanna be in that hectic environment.

I am a very close friend of a few of the D1s that come here. The current D1s are struggling beyond belief because of the way the curriculum has been structured and set up for them to fail. They are all dreading ever coming here and there is talk of them wanting to transfer to get out. The current administration has been on a witch hunt to do nothing but hurt their students. They have invaded private Facebook pages, private chat messages, email accounts and the list goes on to the upper classes. Faculty are continuously talking about leaving the school because of how hostile the environment is. No one is happy at the school, students or faculty, and there is a fear of accreditation loss because of everything that has happened. My advice is, do not let Nova be your first pick school. If you can go elsewhere, that would be your best move until things change with this school. Very sad things have gotten to this point.

Hi guys! I just posted my stats in here last week, but I realized that I don't have the most recent ADEA Dental School Guide. Does anyone know what percent of those interviewed (OOS) get accepted?

I'm not sure, but I am interviewing at NOVA this Thursday, maybe i'll learn something.

A D4 or D3 will give you a tour and then take you to a room with no professors to ask questions that won't be reported back. If you are brave enough ask and report back to us lol. But they kept saying that they don't tell the admissions what is asked

I wonder , if you think or believe this is true about this school then why are you checking this forum? what is the purpose of your message?

Does anyone else know if this is true??? this is concerning because Nova was my 1st choice.....

I interviewed a couple weeks back and some of the students there honestly didn't have nice things to say about the school or the administration. They didn't go into much detail but they just boldly mentioned that things were not the same as they were in the past. The interview process was super relaxed and Dr. Lippmann was very kind to us.

I doubt that is true because of how much they stressed on a great friendly atmosphere over there. The students that gave us a tour were D2 and they said that you have to study a lot but that was the same for other schools I interviewed at too. D1 is all about studying so it's NOT easy anywhere.

You don't need to believe me. I was very interested in applying to Nova this cycle and I didn't because of what has been happening. Ask ANY current student about the situation and you'll be surprised as to what they have to say. I'm just looking out for you all. Goodluck with the rest of your interviews!

Hi everyone: I am D1 student at NOVA, and this was my choice school ( I had 2 other acceptances) . I am happy here but be aware that we constantly study here and it is not the same as in undergrad, just memorizing material is not enough, there is a lot of deductive reasoning, analysing and concluding based on facts and how this knowledge applies in clinical setting. Yes, some people are shocked because of the amount we have to study and think but this is true for any dental school. And yes, some people are struggling (but maybe they are not studying enough or properly). Also some are complaining ( I think too much) that this is so much and quite often people stay in the library until 2am or 3am. Well, if your undergrad GPA was not high maybe you are not ready for a dental school and the amount of work needed here. I was prepared to study and work hard and now am able to get decent grades. But I think at the end I will have the required knowledge to pass the dental board exams. NOVA has this unique program where most of the theoretical subjects are in D1 and D2 so D3 and D4 concentrate on clinical work and that is what I like about this school. Get all the studying done in 2 years then practice to become a dentist in the last 2 years. I asked D4s and they all like this system..
Also the atmosphere here is very cooperative, everyone helps each other, people study in groups, share notes, we constantly post study material, etc.... If someone has a question, there are always others that are ready to post an answer. D2s help as well.
Linda Niessen, who is the dean, has an open door policy and if we have an issue we go to her and discuss it and present our point of view which is considered. dentalchik4lyf talks about a hostile environment here but I have not experienced it. I mean they will not "baby" you.

Last year I reached out to D4s from NYU, U Buffalo, A&M and they all said to me: "dental school is not easy, it is hard, you will have to study a lot, you will have no time for anything else" .
Also this schools invests in most recent technologies so we are learning on most modern dental equipment.

If NOVA is the only school you get accepted to then you should take it, however if you have more offers make a choice that suits you, talk to the current students, read the program schedule and be prepared to study a lot.
that is however only my point of view.
Good Luck to everyone.

Does anyone know when invites will be sent out since Dec. 1st is on a Saturday?

Dr. Lippman said Dec 1st.
The application to dental school: ADEA AADSAS
This year is a little different with the soft open. Historically, it has always been Dec 1. However, ADEA says otherwise this year.

  • ADEA 2018-2019 ADEA AADSAS IMPORTANT DATES:
May 15, 2018: 2018-2019 ADEA AADSAS application opens for applicants. Start your application today and submit on June 5.
June 5, 2018: First day to submit your 2018-2019 ADEA AADSAS application
    August 15 - September 28, 2018: Academic Update period (1st academic period)
    December 3, 2018 - February 1, 2019: Academic Update period (2nd academic period)

Anyone receive an interview recently? It has been about 21 days since I received the "We are reviewing and will have a decision to you in 4-6 days" phone call. I haven't gotten a rejection letter but frequently check the mail every day. I am retaking my DAT in November.... do you think they are waiting for those scores? Freaking out over here 🙁 thanks!

Dentaldiva17: No bad news is good news. If you have not received a rejection then it means they are still considering you but maybe not for an immediate interview. (remember that interviews are held until the end of February). The admission committee constantly reviews applications and may put you on a back burner until they think you are a good candidate. You should email admissions that you are taking DAT in November. As soon as you receive your DAT score send it to them even though they accept only official scores. The official score is issued a month after your test so this is going to be a delay but at least they will keep your application open.

Can someone tell me what the process is like on interview day? I am little confused. So, my interview is midday, but the website says interviews start after 1:30. Also, do I report to the Terry Building?

Interviews start at about 1:30, but you check in to the Terry building at around 11-11:30. After you sign in, you just hang around with the students for about 30 min. Then a dental student comes, takes you to lunch and gives you a tour. After the tour, you meet Dr. Lippman in a conference room with all the other students. He talks for about 30 minutes, tells a couple of stories, and then at 1:30 we go back to the room we hung out with after we signed in and wait for our interview.

Good Luck to everyone.

First and foremost, I am a student at NSU CDM (not a D1) and it is very sad that it has come to this to have to talk about my school in its current light. This SDN thread has exploded virally amongst us students in all classes and everyone has been on here to read about what we have all been experiencing. Now, I'm not going to say that cystinosis is falsifying what is going on, but what I will confirm is that what is going on is not in line with what that post claims. D1's have only been here for less than 2 months, they have no background information as to what led up to the current events and don't have the insight to understand everything at all levels.

I came to Nova for the environment that everyone knows it to be, friendly, collaborative and welcoming from the student to the faculty level. That environment is currently not how it was when I began, and mainly because of the administration. It is hostile, and that is not an exaggeration. The claims said before about the invasion of privacy, social media, etc, those are true. I cannot speak on behalf of the D1s because I am not in their class, but from what I've heard, they've had it rough, unnecessarily rough. The direction this school has been heading is not in a positive one. Students are unhappy, faculty are unhappy, and the events that have led up to today have been a talking point by people not even from Nova.

Addressing a few of the points cystinosis made. Dental school is in fact rigorous, and you do have to work hard and manage your time well. I agree entirely with that. However, I find it hard to believe that one can be "complaining too much" about consistent failing class averages. The point about "the atmosphere here is very cooperative, everyone helps each other, people study in groups, share notes, we constantly post study material, etc...." Don't make me laugh. If only you knew that this is exactly what got us in to the scandal we're currently in.

The poor direction this program is heading in is not entirely at fault of the entire administration. Many faculty and administrators support the students and hear what needs to be said. However, the "open door policy" previously mentioned, cannot be further from the truth. If the students voices would have been heard, I wouldn't be here wasting my time on this post. Until major changes are made, it is sad to say that I doubt anything will change with the current environment. We have complained numerous times about the lack of faculty, about the lack of patients for the clinic, about the lack of access to our powerpoints and lecture recordings for so so long. Has anything changed you ask? The answer is no.

Students in all of the current classes have dropped or have been forcibly removed from leadership positions because of everything that has happened. No student governments, no class voice, and no way to communicate amongst each other without fear of being watched. "Private Facebook pages" and "group chats" are not allowed. Freedom of speech? Not in this private institution. I can go on all day but I'm probably getting near the word limit.

So as a pre-dent, you ask yourself about what kind of school you want to invest the education into that will carry you for the rest of your career. You need to be in a place that you will stay sane in, because 4 years is a long time, no matter where you go. Aside from the $450k hole you're digging yourself into. Be smart about your school choices, the questions you ask and the factors you consider. Do you think the faculty are going to say bad things about the school they work for? Absolutely not. Ask the students directly! I'm not saying don't come to Nova, I'm saying that if I was in your current position, and I had an offer elsewhere, I would take it. Unless things change, steer clear.

Lol is this why the current students at the interview giving tours were like "Wow you guys haven't asked the hard questions we expecting or topic we were expecting". No one in my interview group followed up about that lol

Damn, and here I was happy to get an invite from NSU 🙁

Damn, and here I was happy to get an invite from NSU 🙁

I am happy at NOVA but the curriculum is rigorous.
D1s have a meeting scheduled with the dean's office and the faculty member to address all issues , etc. I am sure these issues will be resolved.
Almost every dental school faces these challenges, I spoke recently to one of the D3 students at NYU and they have tons of complaints and criticism. I suppose not everyone is happy everywhere.
Here is a quote from NYU dental thread : "if you are blessed enough to have gotten an acceptance to ANY dental school, be grateful. everyone here was once a pre-dent wanting desperately to GET IN, now once were in we become ratchet divas criticizing the crap out of every school."

So I interviewed recently and I want to share my experience about all this. When I interviewed just a few days ago, the students giving us our tour were constantly saying "If you have ANY questions about ANYTHING going on at NOVA please ask, our lips our sealed we don't talk to the admissions committee." etc. Which was weird since they said that multiple times, almost like they wanted us to ask. However, when someone asked them if there was anything they wish they knew before coming to NOVA, they all looked at each other in a strange way, laughed and said they would get back to us on that, which they never did.

Also, there are some weird things that happened on the tour. When we were walking around one of the clinics, two current students walked by and one of them said, half under his breath, "Run away!" and then the other one laughed, which was kinda weird. Also, one of the tour guides had to leave early to see a patient, and when he did, he ran into another current student and they began briefly talking. I didn't hear the whole conservation, but I did pick up one of them saying to the other, "The water is already hot, how much hotter can it get." Now he could have been talking about the work load or something else, but from the context and his tone, it kinda sounded like he was referring to whatever the situation was that he and all the students are currently in.

Now all this being said, I had a great time, my fellow interviewees were super nice and we had a great time. A lot of them stayed and hung out after their interviews. The members of the admissions committee we met with seemed super nice and genuine, and the interview was my most relaxed so far.
So all in all, there were just those few things that made me feel uneasy. NOVA wasn't my top pick going into the interview, but If I only got accepted their, I would definitely be happy, just hopefully all this weirdness can be worked out soon.

I too am a student at NSUCDM (not a D1). While all that was stated above is true, the worst part, in my humble opinion, is that what is currently going on is a HUGE distraction from dentistry. I miss the days when we were stressed out about learning dentistry...now there is a thick layer of politics and capital punishment involved that takes so much away from our dental school experience.

I'd like to add that as a student, it can be terrifying at times...yes TERRIFYING. Although there is a handbook, NSUCDM is known for making up rules as they go. I've yet to fail a class (thank you Lord) but I've witnessed students who have failed classes go thru hell mentally and emotionally because there is no universal formula for their fate.

For example, Student A failed 4 classes and Student B failed 4 classes...Student A is placed on "Academic Probation" while Student B is dismissed from the University. Another example, Student C failed 2 classes and Student D failed 2 classes...Student C is placed on "Academic Probation" while Student D is forced to repeat the academic year. One more for you, Student E was CAUGHT cheating on an exam and Student F was ACCUSED of academic dishonesty. Student E was assigned an Ethics Research Paper while Student F was dismissed from the University.

Unfortunately a lot has changed and NSUCDM is no longer looking out for their students. If you need more proof, simply search all the lawsuits they're involved in under the Broward County Clerk's website.

Best of luck with interviews.

Hey,

I am interviewing on November 28th. I am coming from PA. Can anyone accommodate me?

I can't speak for all the faculty but I can tell you that the majority of the faculty (not administration) do not agree with what administration has done. In the last 6 months, I've had long time faculty say to me:

"they've (speaking of administration) turned this place into a prison"
"my grandkids who are in elementary school don't even have attendance taken this many times a day...they could at least treat you guys like adults"
"I'm not telling you to be dishonest (with administration), I'm telling you to be smart because one mistake will make your life a living hell with them"

It isn't hard to understand why some very good faculty have left in the past 10 months.

@Me-dentist - can you please update us on the D1 meeting? i was very happy that i got invited for an interview here at NSU, being study alot not a problem at all and it goes the same with any dental school. But sound to me that if they caught D3 or D4 cheated, the administration should punished that person who's caught cheating, no reason everyone else also got punished, totally unfair for those study hard and tried to succeed in Dentistry Career.

Any D1 have any comments about all these? please let us know....

NSU is not my first choice of school, but i still give it my best for my upcoming interview at this school and hopefully something good will change for us future D1.

As you can see not everyone goes through to the next year.
Attached is a file with data on # of students repeating a year for each school, so you can compare.
E.g. NSU had 2 repeating students and University of Florida had 4 repeating students last year.

For the Class of 2021, NSU dismissed 4 (that I know of) and required 2 to repeat the year.
Of the 4 that were dismissed in June 2018, 2 of those students were taken in by Tuffs and started in August 2018...long story short, Tuffs didn't agree with their dismissal and thus welcomed them into their program. These 2 students didn't go thru the application/interview process. They simply wrote a letter stating the reason for their dismissal, were contacted via phone and granted acceptance into the dental school for the following semester...this is unheard of and imo this speaks volumes.

@Khloe08- if you don't mind - would you please tell us "pre-dent" the specific reasons for those 4 of class of 2021 were dismissed?

Failure of classes.

Just to clarify, I don't say any of this to "bad mouth" Nova. I say this bc the change has been extremely drastic and it's only right that those who are interviewing are able to make an informed decision.

I am sort of confused. So is the cause of all of this a cheating scandal or something else?

Where do I see these lawsuits? I am bit skeptical...

I looked them up and they were all cases from the 90s. Look it up on Broward County Clerk's website. Type Nova.

There was only one with Nova's dental school and that was between a staff member and the school, not the students...

I am also confused too! are student got booted out from school, get back on this forum bad mouth against school or these mess really does existed? i wished someone from administration, faculty.. would clarify these.

For proof, here's what I could find when searching for the Nova Dental School, only 2 cases, one in 2008 and the other in 2011:

Thanks! i also saw this list. NOVA has established since 1997, and this is multi-millions dollars if not Billions and the reputation for the school is really important for administration and management to stay in business, they would be a fool if they don't care about it.
I will keep my eyes wide open, for upcoming interview at NOVA.

I need some help. I never received a confirmation email, my reservation time is 11:45am but I don’t know what time I should be there.

I just interviewed there today. Would be great if you could make it there by 11:15am, this is the time they recommended. The activities don't start until 11:45am though.

Yup, there's only like 15 of us at the interview. Very laid back and conversational for me. Felt really good! Good luck at your interview!
