****The Official OHSU Class of 2017 Interview/Acceptance Thread****

did they say if they would be interviewing OOS or IS applicants first? or both?

I visited the school this Friday and talked with an ADCOM. 10 invitations have been sent out so far and 20 were supposed to be sent out on Friday, but haven't been yet. Also, they have only reviewed through the 6th batch, so anyone later than that has to keep hoping.

Hopefully some of you early applicants will be receiving one of those 20 interviews!

o weary? None is posting on SDN about it unless they dont use SDN.

There is really no benefit to me lying about OHSU sending out interviews, that is just what I was told and I am trying to be as informative as possible. Also, there is a huge applicant population that does not use SDN, so just because someone doesn't post their interview doesn't mean that it didn't happen.

In addition, this adcom told me that OHSU is making the switch to accepting more OOS applicants, as state funding does not allow them to them to accept more than ~35 in state applicants. Too bad for me and all the other oregonians :/

I didnt mean to call u a liar, I was more shocked that they started.

Yea, I mean as a late applicant I wished that they had reviewed more of their applications before sending out interviews as I am 13th batch.

Nothing to do but cross our fingers and wait! Good luck everyone!

OK I'll post here. Me and my roommate both got interview invites on October 31st @ 11:11pm. I'm calling them tomorrow to set up a time as I have been busy lately.

We are both from Arizona.

He was 1st/2nd batch I was 3rd.

GPA: 3.91
AA:21
PAT:23

How do you know what batch you are in?

First batch sent out on 6/29 with additional batches sending each Friday there after. So it depends on when you submitted and got all verified.

is that when you received the "OHSU Early Application Confirmation" email. I received that Monday August 14. So that makes me Batch 8?

I got that email about 3 weeks after I submitted to AADSAS. Go to your AADSAS portal, go to "Dental School Designations", and look at what it says for mailing date. Then use 7/13 as batch 3 to figure out what batch you were.

I just got the "Continuous review" email today. 🙁

My AADSAS application was finally updated to application under review. 🙂

AADSAS status changed to:

"Your application is currently in the process of being reviewed. It will proceed through a multileveled review in which we consider such factors as your GPA, academic history, DAT scores, letters of evaluation/recommendation, investigation in the field of dentistry and all other factors presented in your application. You will be notified in writing and by email of any changes made to your application status."

16th batch (October 12th)

Hello applicants,

I'm currently a DS2 at OHSU and would be happy to answer questions about the interview process or questions in general about OHSU. Let me first share some of my observations...

The school has received less funding from Oregon, and out of the class size of 75, I believe the target is to accept 35 Oregonians and the rest WICHE/OOS. However, the class size will also be increasing to 90 when the new building has been constructed (Summer 2014), so these numbers might change.

OHSU typically sends interviews invites to WICHE/OOS students first and in-state students last. For my class (class of 2015), the FIRST interview invites for Oregon residents were not sent until early January. I know interviews will be starting soon as the admissions department has been asking for current students to volunteer as lunch buddies.

There are lots of change at OHSU right now. Some of the basic science courses will be combined with the med students (anatomy for sure). We have always been a school heavy on lab work (both pre-clinic and in the clinic); however, the in-clinic lab work if beginning to phase out. Instead, the time will be filled with extended clinic hours. The operatories in the new building are awesome and 3x the size of our current clinic work space. The prosth. department is really growing the CAM/CAD elective classes and I'm seeing a lot more students use CEREC on the clinic floor.

The interview process is straight forward. You'll have two, one-on-one interviews (I had one basic science faculty and one dentist). You will have lunch with a current dental student and a tour of the facilities. You will spend an hour or so observing in the clinic, and you will also be able to observe a class lecture.

Good luck to all of you! PM me if you have specific questions.

I'm an Oregon resident and a friend of a friend just got an interview invitation last week from OHSU. I'm not sure if this person was in-state or OOS though. I know that in the past OOS have gotten interview invitations starting at the end of October and most in-staters don't hear anything until January.

Yeah i just talked to a friend yesterday who is a student there and he said that they are getting started with interviews and he has seen for sure 2 groups in for interviews. not sure how many students that means have interviewed or if they are IS/OOS, but just that they have started. I too have heard that its mostly out of state until January...

I was told by an adcom at OHSU that OOS and wiche students will be contacted for interviews first, as they are looking to accept more OOS residents for more revenue. He also told me that they will not have more than 6 people to an interview group. I guess last that I heard, whenever I last posted, there had been at least 30 interviews sent out. WHAT IS HAPPENING? The power of SDN only extends so far and unfortunately cannot provide illumination on any of our questions or doubts 🙁

I just called the school out of curiosity, and even though the person I spoke on the phone didn't have the exact number, she did say roughly 30 invites have been sent out... and that the school had just started sending invites 2-3 weeks ago, MAYBE one batch per week. They will continue sending till Feb...
but then again, the woman on the phone wasn't sure about the exact numbers..

I am an Oregon resident and I just got an interview invitation yesterday. So I guess they are also inviting in-staters as well? Good luck to everyone though and hope to meet some cool people soon 😀

How late into next year do you think they'll do interviews?

If it follows the past couple of years that I have been following OHSU interviews then it could be up to April of next year.

I just received an email inviting me for an interview! They said my letter is on its way 👍

I'm OOS/WICHE.
Science GPA: 3.52 Overall GPA: 3.62 DAT: AA 20 PAT: 21

I actually haven't scheduled it, but I will if they're in the office tomorrow. I'll let you know!

They gave me several options and when I asked them what works best with their schedule they said either the 26th or the 6th of December.

do you mind telling us your stats? I am curious to what they are looking for in in-state applicants

Oh yes, I keep forgetting to reply regarding the stats. 19 AA, 20 PAT, GPA: 3.76.
Lots of volunteer experience, both dental and non-dental, research experience, and significant amount of extra-curricular activities. Hope this helps. Good luck 😉

I spoke to admissions today to set up an interview--they said they are offered M,T,TH and F. They told me they preferred my date before the 7th of December so I'm predicting that they'll start sending more invites around then? 👍

So I had my interview on the 26th and they told me that they were going to let us know by around Dec 3rd, so we'll see! Good luck to you 🙂

I just received the continuous review email today.

Same.

"Your application to the Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry has completed its initial assessment and has progressed to the next phase of review. Your application is amongst a highly competitive pool, which we typically select from to participate in the interview process. You will be notified in writing should you be selected as an interview candidate. Interviews are by invitation only."

Does that mean we have already passed one hurdle?

does anyone know when they stop interviewing OOS people?

I just got that email today too. It seems like we have made it through the first set of hoops. I guess this means we all have to rock our academic updates to catch their attention!

GL everyone! May the waiting begin haha

may the odds be ever in your favor LMAO

I've received the competitive pool e-mail, just curious if anyone has any ideas when I will get an interview invite (if I do get one)? My application was sent from AADSAS 9/28, DAT on 10/12... so I'm fairly late. I'm also instate.

Most likely not until January or February. Possibly even later. They interview pretty late.

aadsas sent 7/6 app fee confirmed 7/24 competitive pool email 10/30 and still got nothing 12/1

Judging from past ohsu threads, i thought competitive pool email was a soft invite...

ohwell what can i do besides playing the waiting game

I am confused on where people have heard that the competitive email is a "soft invite" as you put it. Where are people basing this? It appears to me that only one person that has any information to substantiate this claim is best smile, but they haven't provided any real evidence.

It seems to me that only one person in this thread has received anything but a "competitive continuous review." This leaves my question: for anyone who has already received interviews, did you receive a continuous review email or any other contact from OHSU before your interview invite?

There are two letters that OHSU is sending out. The "Competitive Applicant" letter traditionally has been sent out to those applicants who will eventually receive an interview, based on what prior applicants and current students have said. The "Continuous Review/Not Ready to Take Official Action" letter has been seen as a soft rejection because it's very rare that those applicants receive interviews.

It seems to me that it seems like the "competitive applicant" letter just shows that you have passed through their initial hurdles. I am hesitant to believe that the competitive applicant letter is a telltale sign of an interview invite...it seems to me that a LOT of people have received this email already. Considering the fact that they only interviewed 123 applicants last cycle...

I don't understand why you don't believe the letter. It says in the continuous review letter that interviewees are typically selected from the pool of people that receive the competitive letter. It's been like that for years. You're absolutely right that the letter just means they a person has passed the initial interviews and doesn't guarantee an interview. But your odds are better than not receiving the continuous review letter.

They interview so few people because they are super slow. The bulk of the interviews they hold are already after when people have been accepted to dental schools. Thus people tend to be selective about whether they attend an OHSU interview or not.
