I received the competitive pool email a while back but still have not received an interview? Should I be worried?

OHSU definitely sends out post-Dec invites. My friend interviewed in the Spring of last year and still got accepted. As long as you didn't get a rejection letter, it's best to think you're still in good shape 🙂

On the OHSU Transportation & Parking page, it lists the Schnitzer parking lot ($10/day) and the CLSB parking lot ($22/day). Do most dental students park at Schnitzer instead (because lol wtf??? @ the parking rate for the other one...), and if so, is it difficult to find a spot? I can't decide if it's worth paying $200/month for parking for a 20-40 min commute, or commute 50-70 min via Trimet for only $80/year. I know that's such a huge difference in money, but I really can't bring myself to wake up early/on-time. My K-12 + college years were littered with tardies 😳

I live pretty far out, far enough that transit isn't feasible. Schnitzer prices vary with overall parking demand at OHSU. I've been parking at The Douglas (at Riverplace, the garage is currently managed by City Center) since I started. I have a monthly pass, but I think I've calculated that early bird daily rates are cheaper than what I'm paying on an annual basis.

Seriously, what are you guys doing to manage this waiting and waiting and waiting? :hungover:

I worked last year. I had a gap year so I did IT at a practice management company. I found it to be useful and gave me some money.

I work full time, but unfortunately the job involves a lot of sitting alone with my thoughts lol. How did you get your gig? Doesn’t IT require training/experience?

I'm a nerd and am a few years older than many of you with some experience doing this stuff before I went back to school to become a dentist. (I'm 32 now) I am self trained in IT mostly but have done enough of the stuff that I'd give most college IT grads a hard time to keep up with me. As for the Job, I just applied, gave my experiences in medicine and IT. I dont have a degree in it but my experience got me an interview, where I just rocked it with my personality and knowledge and what I could bring to the table.

Me too!! But at this point it seems so late to me, I've already had acceptances to other schools that need me to decide soon. 🙁

Most students don't drive. Trimet passes are cheap and lots of people get places within walking distance. If driving is a must for you you're going to end up paying a lot because Portland and OHSU in particular limits parking to encourage people to take transit and bike every day. There is a pretty nice indoor bike facility with showers and stuff. I live like 6 miles from campus and I bike every day. Sometimes I carpool with endeross on this thread since we live decently close to each other.

Has anyone received an interview invite recently?

My friend called their office a while ago and they said that they still have a lot of seats left and that things are just moving really slowly this year because one of their admissions people is on maternity leave.

I could be wrong and maybe people just aren’t posting on here, but I sort of suspect that they haven’t sent out any acceptances or (many) interview invites since Dec 1st.

Usually the next wave hits about this time. I bet they'll start coming in a week or two.

It's never too late. Some people from our class got accepted 1-2 weeks before summer term began.

Hello hello! I'm the VP for the class of 2021 comin' in hot with the facebook page for the OHSU SOD class of 2022! For those of you who are accepted this will be your lifeline to your class for collaboration and tom foolery. Use it to get to know your classmates and look for roomates! Anything you can do on facebook you can do here! It's facebook! But for your class! Wow!

In all seriousness this will be one of your most useful tools as a class. Sadly this is restricted to accepted individuals because it's the closed class page, but endeross, Beaver Lover and I are here to answer questions you might have. Good luck to those that are still waiting.

I can tell you that there were a couple people interviewing last week. We had 2 people that our class saw doing interviews for sure. They're in progress, even if the interviewers arent posting here. Keep on trucking guys, just hope for the best and keep pursuing ways to improve your app if you havent been accepted to a school yet.

For anyone interested, I received an interview invitation on January 2nd, interviewed on January 18th, and was accepted on January 25th! From what I gathered while I was there, one of their key admissions people is on maternity leave like grapefruit! said. It's caused them to be really behind during this cycle. When I was there, I was told that roughly half of all their seats have been filled, so there were around 32 spots left, give or take, around January 18th. Good luck to everyone else still waiting to hear back from them!

Congrats! Thank you so much for this information. It makes me feel better. Are you OOS? When did you submit your app? Thank you so much!

Thanks and no problem! I'm an in-state applicant, but my candidacy is kind of weird. I applied last cycle to OHSU and was accepted on December 1st, but declined my acceptance to go traveling instead, so my situation may not be fully representative of most. I submitted my application sometime early June last year. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Congratulations and thank you for sharing! I have to admit it doesn’t make me feel great to know that the class is filling up and they haven’t touched my application in months

I definitely feel you on that. I thought that they hadn't been looking at my application either, since I barely heard anything from them, but the interview invite came out of nowhere, so the silence doesn't mean that they haven't been reviewing your app. Don't lose hope!

I interviewed a few months ago, and I feel like this length of post-interview silence is not a great sign... I'm definitely on the anxious end of the spectrum and struggle with making a good impression at interviews, so it's been a lovely few months of reliving all of the awkward moments of the day. 🙁 I'm trying to stay optimistic but it's hard!

Thanks so much for sharing, and I definitely have a burning question or two. I was talking with a friend who finished her GPR at OHSU no long ago. She said that during the interview process, they will often ask questions about topics that are going on in dentistry right now - like for example, what one's opinion is about "dental therapists", etc. Were there any difficult questions that you felt you needed to prepare for in advance?

Ah, that's a rough situation to be in. After my interview, they said I could always call to check in on things, like how many spots are left, etc... Just an idea if you wanted to follow up. I'll have my fingers crossed that things turn out well for you!

Interesting, my interview during the 2017 and 2018 cycle were very conversational and didn't cover any questions that were like that. I do think that those are appropriate questions though and something you should have an opinion on going into the interview, but we didn't touch upon those things while I was there. We talked mostly about my travels, research, a club I founded in college, my interest in dentistry, and some ethical issues I came across. Beyond preparing for the standard set of questions, I felt like I didn't have to prepare too thoroughly for any particular question. Feel free to message me if you have anything else you'd like to ask! Don't want to blow up the forum 😛

I'm just like, confused. Am I on the waitlist? Does OHSU bother sending out rejections?

I'm still waiting on an acceptance as well. I'm not sure if they do, but when I had my interview, they told me OHSU will send out an email to the people who weren't accepted and ask if he/she would like to be on a waitlist.

They send out rejections. If you arent rejected you're still on the list. You can get placed on an alternate list if you get an interview and they have all seats filled as was my case, I had my interview in april and then got accepted the week before classes from the alternate list in august. I got an email a few weeks after my interview stating I was put on the alternate list. Hope that helps. Some people I know got interviews, then got accepted like 1-2 months later. Some heard back 1 week after interview and one person the day after. I know I called to ask about the status of my app a couple times, once before I got an interview and once after (about 1 month before I finally got accepted) They are willing to help if you have any questions but I'd suggest against calling if all you're going to do is ask "whats up with my app?" At least have something to talk about and some specific questions to ask.

Hey friends! Interviewing next week on March 20th - any tips from those who have been interviewed/accepted? Grew up in Oregon and have been away for some time, but really keen on OHSU and being close to my family again!

Interviewed March 20th, accepted April 9th!!
Congratulations! Don't forget to join your class of 2022 Facebook. Link is posted earlier in the thread. Same goes with anyone else accepted. Please refrain from doing so if you haven't gotten an acceptance.

Spoke to 4 people interviewing last week and this week. Supposedly about 1/3 of the class (25 spots-ish) still isn't full yet according to my sources for those that are interested.

Interviewed Feb 16th, placed on hold a month later, and accepted off hold on April 20th. I requested to be part of the facebook page, does someone approve that request?
Yah, you'll get added shortly
