** The Official UPenn Class of 2018 Interview/Acceptance Thread **

Does anybody know if the class is filled or they save seats open for interviews later i.e. January?

The class isn't even close to being filled.

Thanks, any idea on what % is filled thus far? Also, anybody know the odds of receiving a spot post-Dec? Will they let you know their decision soon after interviewing?

I don't think anyone knows the actual numbers, but Penn sends out a lot more acceptances than they have seats because many applicants turn them down due to the price. I'm sure plenty of people interviewing post-Dec will be in the next class. And from what I've read, most post-Dec interviews hear back rather quickly.

For those of you who interviewed pre dec and didn't hear anything yet, does that mean you are on the waitlist or rejected or what?

I have a choice of interview date for either this Thurs, which I have a final and a Loma Linda interview on Wed, or Jan 9, which is kinda late compared to this week... I don't know what to do =(. I really, really love UPenn, even though my chance is slim. Is an F on embryology for missing the final worth it? I am serious. I am from california too.

I received my app complete email November 5. Anyone know the avg wait time until I hear anything? Just really looking forward to something!! Thanks

Call Corky and explain your situation. Dental schools will work with you on these circumstances. I would personally either skip your LL interview, or interview on Jan 9 but not miss your final! You want to do well in your classes because your offers of admissions could be rescinded if you fail a class.

I second this.

Hey guys! I am having an extremely hard time deciding on UPenn. I loved it when I interviewed there, but am worried about the price tag and supposed gunner reputation. What pros do you see in the school that makes it worth attending and would outweigh these cons?

can you elaborate on this "gunner" reputation? I've heard it used to describe other schools too and I have no idea what it means.

Competitiveness to the point of sabotaging fellow classmates.

I've heard from current students that it varies by year. A third year told me his year was fabulous whereas the year below his is significantly more "gunner"

Don't know how adequate of a description it is but...think of your above average pre-med student in your Tuesday/Thursday organic chem discussion who always hogs the TA to ask questions.

For me personally, not everyone that I encountered during my interview was like that, but the one or two students who did seem like that really rubbed me the wrong way.

Well I can tell you that the reason I love penn- and the main reason I applied- is their clinical structure. They allow D1-2 students hand on clinic experience (assisting) with D3 and D4 students. To me (as a hygienist), this is a crucial portion to learning dentistry! Hands on! Books get boring and I believe to be an excellent clinician, you need to apply what your learning in lecture to what you're physically doing (or going to do) in clinic. Big ups to Penn for implementing this!

And just to touch on the gunner reputation: you don't have to be friends with everyone! It's nice to build friendships, but keep your eye in the prize- you are your top priority. Good luck making a decision.

Thank you now I get it! Yeah I'm picturing that exact guy in my orgo class right now 👎

No... there is no gunners here (in my class anyways). Everyone is fairly helpful actually (D1 and D2's actually). We exchange helpful resources all the time + when a person gets an email from professors regarding exams, they forward it to everyone. Don't let rumors run your decision and actually PM someone in the school for the truth. We encourage you to comment and ask questions in the facebook forum. :playful:

The dynamic of the class depends on just that.. the class! Us D1s and D2 will definitely try to break the ice (just like the D2s did for us) and not have your class turn into a shooting range. At Penn, we're very much like a family.

Looking forward to meeting you all! 🤣

Anyone currently (or recently graduated from UPENN) that did HPSP? If so, please PM me. Thank you.

I would love to know the answer to this question as I was interviewed pre-december and never heard back on the 2nd of December. I'm assuming we get placed back into the applicant pool and are re-evaluated with the post-December interviewers? I'm not sure.

question for the fellow canadians: for the new dental student information form, if you don't have a social security number, do I not fill it out or do I call the office for a temporary university ID?

I also interviewed pre-dec and got a letter asking if I wanted to be placed on their waitlist. Not sure how much movement there is on the Penn waitlist..but at least it's not a rejection?

I did not receive that letter. I guess that's good news for you and bad news for me.

anyone else get an update 12/10 on the portal saying "under review"?

Just got an interview invite for the 17th. I got an email in November asking for my fall grades so I was hoping for an invite 😀 .. The cost thoooo -__-

Congrats! When was your application complete?

Did anyone here interview December 13 or after? I remember Corky saying that she'll be on vacation and then the school closes for the holidays so I was just wondering if anyone has a clue on when we'll get some kind of response. thanks!

I called today. They are going to try to get a committee meeting going this week, but no guarantees. Best of luck!

Does anyone know if there's a particular laptop dental students need to get? Mine crashed so I need a new one soon!

Interviewed in Mid- December and acceptance letter today!!!
