accepted oos! does anyone know whether they offer any type of scholarship for out of state students?

Anyone hear that the dean of admissions accepted a position somewhere else? Dean change in the middle of the cycle sounds weird, especially for those that were interviewed by her.

Where did you hear that?

She got a job offer for a higher-level position and took it, nothing weird happened or anything though.
I’m aware of that. Do you know if that may have impacted those interviewed by her? Possibly in a rush to make a decision about those she interviewed? Or maybe some candidates were on the fence and she was not able to defend them because she had already left? Leaving the decision to be split between two hire ups. Not sure how decisions get made, just genuinely curious on if he leaving made an impact on those she interviewed.

Why would it? As far as I know at most schools including here decisions are (usually) made relatively soon after interviews. I’m sure everything was complete before she even got the offer. No offense, but I think pre-dents tend to really overthink stuff like this.

I can't claim to know exactly what their system is but I know they calibrate a lot, so that all interviewers should give relatively similar assessments were they to all interview the same candidate, and are rather systematic about the process, so nothing should change going forward for post-Dec. interviewees, and she's certainly already submitted her assessments for anyone she interviewed pre-Dec. I guess I'm not saying there couldn't possibly be any effect at all, but I really doubt this would change anything much if at all.

Maybe because she was known to focus solely on academics

Gotcha. Completely understand and agree with all you have said. I guess my biggest thing was that I’ve heard she is very big on academics, oppose to others faculty members who care more about your personality and what you can bring to the table. So I’m asking the question in a way where it’s like, say someone that was interviewed by her had subpar academics but an awesome personality. She would focus on their academics, whereas another faculty member would focus on their personality. The outcome would be completely different in their final say. Again, this is just from what I’ve heard so correct me if I’m wrong. And I know this is just the surface of it all — way more goes into it. Thanks!

She's like, ridiculously personable. One of the nicest people I've ever met. So you hearing the academics thing seems pretty weird to me honestly, haha. I know there are a few people in my class who got like a 16-17 DAT and their personal factors were, I think, a major part of them getting in. That being said, my class's average DAT is a 21. That's higher than the national average, but not much higher.

You also have to remember that even an admissions director doesn't necessarily have the final say on a particular applicant. All the interviewers score their interviewees and report to the admissions committee who further deliberates and then votes based on the interviewers' recommendations. This is very general, but multiple schools I interviewed at described a similar process. The director is, of course, a member of the admissions committee, but there are also still other votes. I really doubt that anything like what you said would be happening in the current situation.

Congrats to everybody who gain admission!
Good luck to those waiting to hear from the school!

I will be attending VCU on 2019, and Im looking forward to killing-it with you guys for the next four years! :soexcited::clap:

Did anyone here receive a scholarship offer? How much and stats/residency?

I’ll be turning down my spot here so hopefully one of you guys gets it!

Damn lol just trying to justify the cost of it vs my state school because I liked it so much
People always say go to the cheapest school, and they're right for the most part, but you also have to live bro. If you can make peace with the extra cost, and you really want to go to VCU, then f***k it, bite the bullet

For the record: VCU is the second cheapest school I got into, not the cheapest

true, I like the way you think

I was accepted Dec 3 via email. VCU is my state school so I was super excited!
Speaking of scholarships, I got an email the next day (Dec 4th) saying I was selected for a $20,000 scholarship if I attend. It will be dispersed over the 4 years, every little bit helps haha

what are your stats if you don't mind me asking? that's incredible! congrats!

I’m so excited!! In-state and will be attending! VCU is bae.

Btw there’s a class page on FB for accepted students so if y’all want to join it’s called VCU School of Dentistry Class of 2023 (Accepted). Please lmk if there are any other groups for our class on SDN or FB!

7 weeks every summer off?! That seems like a lot, is that normal for other schools?

Some schools yes, some no. A big part of it is so we can study for boards, and we only get the long break after D1. Not sure if schools that do have long summers will change going forward now that we're starting the INDBE.

Would the dean make all of the decisions though? Isn't there committees that vote yay or nay or do the decsionsall rely on one person?

Do they not have a waitlist? I emailed them and all they said is that my app is still under consideration. Have not been rejected or waitlisted yet and I interviewed in October

Just received an interview invite! Can someone give me an insight on the interview part?

Congratulations!!! It's a two-day thing. It's two on one interview the second day, mine was very very relaxed and they were very kind. I brought drawings/ manual dexterity examples to show them and they seemed super impressed with that so I would recommend bringing something like that. Mine lasted about 25 minutes. On the first day, they do not feed you until the very end and there is a lot of walking around. I was about to pass out I was so hungry because I didn't eat before I went. So definitely don't do that. But it's fun and everyone is very friendly!

If you don't mind me asking. Was the scholarship merit-based or how were you selected for the scholarship?

did everyone receive an email about VCU School of Dentistry- Are you still interested?
