rumorville has struck here too and have heard this was the most in the scramble in sometime....cannot confirm but that is the rumor

Alright, some stunning numbers from the match this year for our school.

We have 51 people. 10 had to scramble, although one was for only a prelim as they matched categorical.
So we scrambled close to 20% of our class. I think they decided against my school this year.

😱

We hit the double digits (out of about 115) at my school apparently, mostly for prelim spots.

I wonder if it has much to do with more people shying away from primary care?

I'm not going to mention numbers just yet, but I know that our class took somewhat of a hit as well. It's a very odd year.

I don't know what to blame it on yet. I can't imagine that there was a huge wave of DOs crossing over, and it's not like FMGs are suddenly realizing the US is a good place. But when only 4 categorical spots in OB-GYN were left this year after the match, and all of them at the same program, something doesn't seem right. I keep hoping against hope that Thursday morning the NRMP will release a statement that they messed up, and have to run it again. Actually, I don't hope that, because then everyone else will have to wait.
Even FM matched 5% more this year than last year. Something just seems off this year.

We have 60 in my class, I think 8 scrambled. 11 folks wanted EM, 3 are scrambling. It was a crazy year.

NCC, I hope you find something soon!!!!! :luck: :luck: :luck:

I don't know what the status is at my school. I have mandatory class on Thurs, so I'll make sure to scout around and report back. Word is that this year's class at my school is composed of rockstars compared to previous classes, but who knows how they fared in the match.

It's strange...my class has better stats than the one before, the next class has better stats than us, and so on. This year is just off...I can't explain it either. There were a few people who I was blown away by the fact that they didn't match. Not that I wish the scramble on anyone, but I'm a little more comforted to see that this is not an isolated phenomenon. Many of us were starting to worry about our school's reputation had once again hit a low playing a part in our results this year.

yes most definitely a nationwide phenomena...don't know what the deal is...but my school took a big hit as well one of the largest if not the largest group of scramblees my school has seen...so i hear....

Obviously I'm on the outside, but I share your feeling about this year (and I watched last year's match pretty closely). I guess "Black Monday" took on new meaning this year 🙁.

Man sorry to you guys who went thru this terrible process. One of the good bits of news is that there may be more programs next yr. The match numbers dont seem to make a ton of sense to me. I doubt there were more people or fewer spots across the match in categoricals. As such I dont know if it is more "competetive" overall (not talking by specialty). The numbers should be interesting.

anyone know which programs were unfilled in EM?

fetus wanna know.

Thank you guys for offering all the :luck: icons and such.

A bit of scary scramble info from my school for you guys:

6 of about 100 scambled.
4 of the 6 were EM scramblers.

Not quite the Harper's Index, but still...

I will share when I (hopefully) get something.
ncc

I didnt want to say anything before, but now since everybody is chiming in... my school has an unusualy large # of people scrambling as well (I dont think its necessarily EM). I really hope the match software didn't botch something up. God forbid if I match into ob-gyn im bringing Cochran back from the dead and we goin to court.

OB/GYN was quite tough this year too. And I had a dream that the match was botched...

Fetus...check your PM's.

So of the 6 spots 3 were in Vegas (which I am sure will have NO trouble filling), how about the 3 in the "Central" I am guessing some places in Michigan.

Also What are the people in the Vegas program thinking, it is tough competing with the In n Out residency. (Hope this makes the day a little easier).

I will say last yr we had a relative paucity of people who scrambled. Mostly people who didnt quite fit their fields personality wise or people with poors numbers. It doesnt seem to be the case this yr.

Considering they take 3 weeks for quality control, I'd be highly dissapointed if there was a mistake. Technically it should have been run multiple times with the same results.

you heard about the Uro match a few yrs ago right? Not trying to freak people out, but I am just saying.

You're right, but it just seems like a very weird year.

Yeah, I did. But my understanding is that they don't have to wait as long as those that participate in the NRMP match (I could be wrong). Plus they get the results the same day they find out if they matched.

geeze guys.....what happened? Are there that more med students? Are there just more applicants? What is going on?

Yeah, but i doubt their match is as QC as the NRMP's.

My guess is that there was an increase in the "quality" of applicants that were trying to match into the specialties, with less going into the primary care fields. But this doesn't hold up with FP, since they apparently increased 5% this match. I'd be interesting to compare the stats in IM and maybe Peds from last year and this year to see if there was a drop off in those numbers.

Not to sound ungreatful but I am really scared about Thursday esp with the way today went. Hope I am not matching at the bottom of my list.

Wow, these numbers sound awful. So unfortunate all around. I am the only kind from my school in AUS so I can't relate to the scrambling classmates thing but it just seems like so many even here on SDN. I just feel so awful for my collegues here.

Even FM matched 5% more this year than last year. Something just seems off this year.

I think this was largely due to a decrease in the number of FM spots. It tough to have to go unfilled, so they are tightening up spots so there is a closer correlation between allopathic applicants and spots available.

I'm honestly terrified as well. I feel very lucky to match now, though. The last two programs on my list are places I know I wouldn't be happy at. But they are there b/c I rather match than not.

hopefully thursday brings good news to all!

Dr. Will...I am in the same boat but there is a few more at the bottom of my list. I mean, I would rather match at those locations than no where...but...well...you know. I am sure everyone is going through this right now after learning about how terrible this year has been. But my first choice is taking a lot more residents next year if they get the approval....uggg...of course...

i have a question...if you interviewed at and ranked a program highly but did not match, and that program went unfilled...does that mean that the program didn't even rank you?....Am i correct?...if so, WAY HARSH🙁

My buddies applying to IM this year said their # filled was way up too.

?

UMiss in theory, but that spot was filled before noon.

WTF?!? I think that is lame. I would like to think that programs would be like "you are calling before noon?!?... you're blackballed". It's just not right. Where is the honor in that?!?

I would assume that they didn't.

I'd be happy at my #17, even though I ranked it that low. I'd make the best of it since it's in a great city and has been around for a while.

That's interesting. WTF happened this year? 😕

I don't know what the trend has been in recent years, but for IM:
Offered: 4798
Unfilled: 78

I'd say that's a low number of unfilled for that many available spots.

I would be...

#1-3: STOKED!!
#4-5: Love living in the those cities, pretty darn happy
#6-7: Great programs, would still be pretty cool
#8-9: Not jumping out of my chair but whatever
#10: Flat out unhappy but such is life

Fixed it for you there.
Honestly, I'm not holding any grudges against any of you, it isn't your fault I didn't match. Still, I feel pretty ****ty right now, even with a job next year

My GF and I had been trying to figure out how we were going to do the envelope opening thing. Based on what's happened in the last couple days I made the decision that I need to open it on my own. I need to accept whatever shows up on my letter, and this will best be done on my own. Besides, I don't want her to have any unhappiness during her moment. I guess the worst part is that I don't want it to hit us all of a sudden that we will be going to different places, which would happen if we opened them at the same time. 🙁

McNinja- at least you have one, my hubby still hasn't found one.

That is a tough situation to be in. What is she trying to match into?

I've said it before, in many ways I'm glad my gf isn't in medicine. It's a lot tougher on her right now not knowing where we are going to go because she's giving up a lot and has to transfer to continue her pre-reqs, find a new job, and move away from her friends and family.

You're lucky that you don't have to open your envelope on a stage in front of hundreds of people and then read it out to the crowd. I hate my school's tradition.

I don't blame you. It must be tough to sit around and listen to all this. I would DEFINITELY be very angry with the whole situation. My SO will be trying to match into EM next year and I am definitely sweating the fact that we may be apart based on how things have been this year. I dread the situation and I am sorry you have to go through it. Hopefully, PGY2 will bring you closer to your fiance.

We have the chance to opt out, but doing so makes it seem like you are hiding something. I hate it.

Yeah, that is some silly $hit (SSS). Everyone should have SSS painted on their chest as they walk on stage. Can you refuse or are they fascists about it?
