while rounding yesterday ruined my day today was much better.

4 weeks of sub-i then medical school officially ends for me. I hate the wards.

I have 1 more week of vacation, then 4 weeks of ethics (meets twice a week for 3 hours a day), and then I'm done with med school. Considering I have a year of surgery staring me in the face, I don't feel the least bit guilty about having a few slack weeks. 😎

I don't mind it so much except for the fact that I'm doing it at Advocate Christ, which is about 45-60 minutes away from Chicago on any given traffic filled day. I rather not commute. Oh...and yes I'm a lazy bastard and have NO desire to do ANY work right now. The thought of full H&P's and rounding :scared: is making me have an allergic reaction.

Does not sound like fun at all, especially with the commute 🙁

I have 4 weeks of "Interdisciplinary Oncology." It's basically a useless rotation some vice dean created so he can say he has an innovative curriculum. 🙄 He's now been named the new dean for some new DO school. 🙄 The potential to skip is so high, they make us have the attendings sign a sheet everyday to prove we showed up, like we are a bunch of kids. 😡

You should see how many rotations we have to sign in to because of Fetus' class before us.

So let's see...6 days of work per week for 4 weeks. That leaves 24 days of actual work before my nice 8 weeks off before orientation. Jeez...and I thought the three weeks waiting for match day were tough. I'm rethinking everything now.

I have the month of April doing my medicine sub-I. It shouldn't be too bad; most of the attendings are not big rounders. Or maybe thant's just wishful thinking....

I graduate May 13th, Mother's Day. Very appropriate for me with 3 kids, one born in med school. My husband has business in Shanghai at the end of May so we are taking the kids and spending a month travelling in China. Get back June 14th; start orientation on June 18th. Can't wait! and thank god we don't have to move!

You realize I'm going to have to organize a Cincy bachelor party now...whatever that entails.

Funny you should mention that. Four guys in my class are getting married in the next 6 months and, while we're all having our own separate ones all over, we're planning a joint bachelor party sometime soon down in Lexington since, well, the laws are a little more lax in KY. We'll let you know how it goes and you can learn from our mistakes!

This is going to be a long 4 weeks. 🙁 But at least it's the last hoop to jump through before getting that M.D.! :hardy:

Wheh. I wonder when med school ends for me. 😀

Sub-I experience to date...

Show up Monday morning for orientation to find out I'm on call. No patients at that point. Wait around till 4pm when I get a page from my senior. "What are you doing right now?" I begin to curse the world b/c I know I'm getting an admit. "Nothing." I respond. "Well it's a slow day...you wanna go home?" I yell "yes!" and proceed to leave my call night at 4pm. Go out with friends for a bday dinner and proceed to drink a pitcher of potent, delicious margaritas.

Show up Tuesday at 9am. Still no patients. Team is now post call. 1 hour of morning report, and 1 hour of teaching rounds. Chat with my senior to figure out what's going on since we are on short call tomorrow. She lets me know she won't be around tomorrow afternoon or Thursday afternoon, which means NO PATIENTS FOR ME. We aren't allowed to enter orders so any patient I have is essentially the senior's patient. She lets me know I will not have any patients until we are on call next...on Friday.

It is now 130pm, and I am home. So far so good. 😀

That's good to hear.

I am being sneaky sneaky getting on here. I have tried to avoid this site when the so is around, but he left for an hour lab. I now have an hour to try to catch up on reading threads.

Why are the forums so quiet now? Is it that everyone is still in post-match party mode or just got extra busy trying to make moving arrangements?

Oh here's one for you all...my lil sis has had this rash come and go (well, down to 2-3 spots before it flares back up) for the past 4 weeks. It has been mostly on just her legs, but will spread from leg to leg to her arms, back to her leg, to her other leg, to her abd, etc. We tried hydrocortisone cream and benadryl with no luck. Any ideas? Too bad I haven't had skin yet in class (comes next year for me)... Oh ya, the spots were red and puffy with a white halo. Is there still a chance it is just allergies?

Oh and another note, we did bring her to a nurse practitioner (dr was out of town for the week), who gave her clarinex in case it was an allergy, but then said it could be something viral. Does this make any sense to you?

If you have more questions just ask...and no, I don't know if it itches because I've never seen her even scratch at a mosquito bite (and she can't tell us if it does...she is special ed and I don't think she comprehends what it means.)

Can't answer medical questions, sorry. Have her see a derm for definitive answers, unfortunately.

I'm sunburned. 🙁
My jeep is causing me to tan an at alarming rate. Something about not having a roof.

Oh, and when you shave your head, you burn your scalp. Mine has already healed, but it sucked for a couple days.

Is this really how med students view sub-Is? Maybe I have been a little blue eyed but it seems to me most M4s like "playing doctor" before real life starts next year. And it's not like I have much to do with their evals, either, so I don't think they are all just trying to suck up.

I love giving a really sick patient to the student and letting him/her run with it. I thought that love was shared by the students. Perhaps I am getting cursed at more than I know?😱

Input?

It depends...a MS-4 in July/August is very different from a MS-4 in March/April. And yes, your med students are probably cursing you this time of year.

Yes, my wife is on a terrible last rotation, NICU. She has to take in house call q4, come in on weekends when not on call, and be there at 630, home after 6. Now, if this were at the beginning of the year, that would be great. However, right now she is basically the only MS4 working, while the rest of us drink mojitos.

I don't mind working, even at this point in the year. But the problem lies in that we get very little responsibility at some of our clinical sites when it comes to our sub-i. My role is essentially no different than that of a 3rd year. Give me patients, allow me to write/enter orders, allow me to call my own consults and staff with the proper attendings...this will make it a worthwile experience. Otherwise, I don't want my time wasted, especially at this point in the year. Also, if you read my last paragraph about getting told I won't get patients until Friday...it adds to the frustration. If I have to be there (which I do), I rather have patients than not.

Working with the neuro-oncologists over at Moffitt Cancer Center is morbid. I just can't see how they do it everyday. Their only satisfaction comes from extending a patient's life by a few months, all while decreasing their quality of life. 🙁

Man we made it into an art form... seriously even i was impressed with the stones of some of my colleagues.

Tampa Schmapa. I love miami.. even if the sun doesn't come out all day and allow me to bask in it for 8 hours a day.

😎

Hope there is more sun today. Are you staying on South Beach?

I was. 5th and Ocean in a lovely condo. I am back in NYC now, but the weather is nice here (not as nice as miami).

I was sadly only there long enough for me to want to be there longer. 🙂

Of course, the international music festival kept me busy as well.. but not being able to sleep on the beach interfered with my plans. 🙁

But I did go eat at Novecento on Brickell 😍 😍 and tried a great newish place in southbeach. Cafe Marques (wonderful French provencial, low key, nice wine, great prices OUTSTANDING food and service). Its on Washington between 4th and 5th.

🙁 sigh... can I come back?????

Good morning all! I am about to have the best breakfast in the islands right now. A place called Mitsuken's and then I'm going to go bodysurf the shorebreak at a place called Sandy's.

35 more days until my graduation! :hardy:

I am going to go to all my lectures today...and hopefully stay awake.

7 more days on medicine.. 2 of them are off days.. SWEET.. then trauma... why do i torture myself...?

I somehow managed to set my alarm for the wrong times twice today. Once was because I was going to get up before class to study (well, during the classes I was skipping). I managed to set it for pm instead of am. Then, I decided getting up was a bad idea, so I set it to get up for my 10:00 class, but set it for 10:15. Don't think I was even thinking at that point. Oh well, now I am rested up and ready to study today.

DW, SG... Did you guys get your contracts/packets in the mail yet? I'm leaving the country tomorrow and I haven't heard back from anyone regarding whether I need to get paperwork back to them before I leave... 😕

Nope, no packet/contract yet. I can PM you once it gets here so you'll know what's in it and if there is a deadline or anything. Hopefully you'll have access to email/internet. Have fun on your trip! 🙂

Thanks SG! You rock! 🙂 I just may have more luck getting on SDN than accessing my school email while I'm in China. 😛

Yeah...no contract today. I check my mail eagerly everyday hoping to get it. It is one of the few things keeping me going on this pointless sub-i (which is really just a repeat of 3rd year IM). I emailed some peeps about housing/area info on monday and haven't heard back from that either.

Call number 2 is over with. 2 patients admitted today (COPD exacerbation, and DT's). I found out I don't have to come in at all this weekend b/c I'm useless. I like not coming in...but I'm hating this "useless" stuff. I'm supposed to be admitting patients, but I'm just another secretary. Lame.

Oh and dancemedic...which one are you on our class picture? I only have a couple of us figured out. 😀

You know...I woke up this morning and thought about how truly excited I am to start residency. I haven't been this pumped up about medicine in I don't know how long. I think this may be why I'm more dissapointed with my sub-i experience as opposed to being angry I have to be there. 👍

Yes...I'm a freakin nerd for saying this by the way.
