Ah...First aid, boards and wards, goljan audio and kaplan qbank. Found a schedule somewhere on SDN for four weeks of hard core studying and modified it a bit.

Good luck.

I refuse to go near the Step 1 forum. Well, I do as of now. I just saw someone whining about how they have 7 weeks to study for Step 1 once classes end, but they are freaking out about studying for the boards now...I don't plan to tackle the boards until after finals, and then I'm giving myself 29 days of study time before I take the boards.

That's plenty of time...any more than that and you'll want to shoot yourself in the head.

On call on a saturday. Wonderful. 😡

I'm going to miss Texas weather...

Got the first load out of my house and to my parents last weekend. Came back with an empty trailer to fill up. Only left out about 4 pairs of shorts and 4 scrub tops since it was running in the 80s here....oh, and a pair of backless shoes.

Now today, I wake up to find it 24 and 3 inches of snow on the ground!!!

I should clarify - Step 1 study plan.

My sister is taking step I this summer. I told her to read First Aid as many times as she can, then do all of Qbank. BRS Pathology was a must too. HY Gross Anatomy, HY Embryology, and HY Behavorial were good. Then read from my old Kaplan books whatever she feels weak on. I guess the new First Aid is systems based, so that should be an improvement.

I studied 5 weeks, but after 4 weeks, I wanted to rip my eyeballs out and feed them to a wildebeast, then throw myself into a wood chipper. I'm pretty sure my score wouldn't have changed if I took it after 4 weeks.

Do you really think systems-based is an improvement? I'm at a school that has a traditional curriculum and was thinking of sticking with my old First Aid simply because it's in the same format as I was taught the material.

Well, I guess I think it's an improvement because our curriculum is more systems based, and so is the one at my sister's med school. But I think you should review it like you learned it, so maybe sticking with your old FA may be a good idea.

That's sort of what I was thinking. "Don't change horsemen mid-Apocalypse..."

I think it's a better way to integrate the material, which Step 1 does. I had to completely seperate my step 1 studying from my actual finals studying (which was cumulative for the entire year, and a traditional curriculum) because of this. Either way, witht the amount of time you have to study for it, you'll be fine.

BTW...what's the name of the review book everyone uses in EM...Rivers? I'm bored and am searching amazon for books.

Yeah, although I heard one of the chiefs at my school's program recommend Tintinalli's "Just the Facts" or something for in-service studying in intern year.

Not sure it's on Amazon, I think there is a website though.

Yeah, I just discovered this as I found said website. Google has the answer yet again. 😀 But amazon has a lot of cool textbooks I'd like to own, but would never really get around to reading.

I already have the big Tintinalli's (which was one of the best birthday presents i've ever recieved, thanks to my GF). But I guess I'll go the traditional route of a review book (Rivers) and a question source (Peer VI). Man I'm bored if I'm already planning out my strategies for inservice/boards. Maybe I should focus on the fact that I'll probably have to retake CS based on how crappy I did.

Rivers, but she sells it only on her site. Your program might pay for it so i would rec asking before you drop the 160 or so. Also just start on tintinallis or rosens..

At Cinci we get 2 books and a one time $250 book allowance (according to the info on SAEM.org, since nothing "official" has come in the mail yet since match day). I'm planning on getting me some PEPID with that allowance, so I'm trying to figure out what books would be best to get otherwise.

Wonder what 2 books? I didn't know we are getting a free PDA too...

BTW Peer VII is out now.. also you might be able to get a copy without paying the big bucks for it. FYI...

My rec would be to start tintinalli now and then do rivers once residency starts.

I hope they are books of our choice. A friend of mine interviewd at Cinci for IM and told me that the whole place is wireless so you're able to check labs, etc. I already own a treo 650, and a palm (although the treo has limited memory). I'm hoping we can say "i don't want this, can i get more book money instead?"

HOld on Fetus...are you suggesting I actually start reading Tint now? Keep in mind I'm on my sub-i, with less than 2 weeks of medschool left and that I have 8 weeks of glorious time off to destroy my liver. 😀

Page a day, maybe? 😛

If I was going to read anything, I was thinking of rereading case files (to prime my brain out of IM mode), Garcia for remembering how to even approach and EKG, or "Rads made ridiculously simple" to remember what an xray looks like. Now if I made it through those, I'd pick up EM Secrets to remember some of the finer points. And if I was feeling really spunky...open up Tints. 😀

Hehe 🙂. I say DO NOTHING!!!

Hehe 🙂. I say DO NOTHING!!!

That is my plan. Going to go find a house next week, then back to home and work with my dad to save up some much needed cash. I have 4 years to learn Emergency Medicine. Everyone I asked about studying beforehand said heck no, take a vacation.... I am going to try to squeeze one or two of those in as well... 🙂

Hehe 🙂. I say DO NOTHING!!!

There was a day once where I did nothing. That day was everything and more than I ever thought it could be.

Anyone seen any job openings for "retired billionaire" recently?

I think I feel a sinus infection coming...starting to get congested and can't hear well through one of my ears. Not going to be a fun week. Oh well, I knew it was that time of year, and I have been lucky to not have one yet.

Is it bad that I traveled about 1 hr 15 min round trip just for some fast food? It was the closest location from where I live...but then again it is the day before the test. Good thing I brought along a person to teach me some stuff on the way that was going to be on the test tomorrow.

Oh ya...and it was nice to get out of here for once. I swear the walls start closing in on me.

Oral presentation went fairly well. I didn't have any flop sweat at least. Unfortunately, I got dropped the BF bomb by this cute girl I've been talking to. Just out of the blue, "Oh, my BF does that..." At least she let me know.

Sorry you got the b-bomb, Todd!

I'm finding it nigh impossible to muster the interest to do my ethics reading. And I still haven't picked a topic for Thursday's presentation.

And I can't say that my lack of topic is going to keep me awake tonight. Last year, knowing I had to do a presentation on something but not having a topic would have given me fits. Now I just don't care. Actually, I'm a bit miffed b/c doing a presentation is going to cut into my Wii time.

nothing to do till PGY1.. gett'n jiggy with the License requirements.
so here's what I understand.. need degree, plus step 3, plus "some experience".. plz correct me if wrong.

and.. do all the States have the same definition for "some experience" = 1 yr residency for US grads?
any more lenient/stringent States out there?

OK, I'LL HELP:
is it ethical to abort a disabled fetus (say, Down Syndrome) ?
The mom here is ready, willing, and chose to get pregnant. yet decides to abort based on disability. Is it the same ethical debate as pro-choice vs. pro-life? I think it's more than that, coz it involves genetics and medical advances on screening...
suppose there's a new fetal screen for blue eyes. can you abort if your fetus didn't have 'em, and try again till it does?

... Hmmmm ...

I hate when professors contradict themselves within 3 pages of notes, then ask a test question regarding the subject. I know the correct answer was not one of the choices they gave us, and I also know which one he will say is correct because it is word for word out of his notes. Too bad I decided to understand the subject instead of just memorizing his notes.

Does this type of thing occur in other places...where different teachers contradict each other, then you get test questions about the matter, and you have to guess who it came from???

Here's a fun pic:

..so as I see it, EM is perfect for me.

Welcome to the hell that was my pharmacology class!!!

That's part of the problem (Pharm profs teaching what they know, and the clinical and micro people teaching what they know, usually someone is different)...the other is physiology...but then again, that was just one professor contradicting himself.

I've always loved that diagram. Very funny!

Is it a general rule that all pharmacology classes in medical school have to be horrible? Mine sure stunk and I've yet to talk to anyone who really had good pharm classes at their med school.

I just hate pharm. I know that the drugs are good to take, but I hate memorizing lists...which is what pharm seems to me. We actually have some good pharm profs, just that the others contradict them is the problem. That and that by the time we have to know drugs, there will be some completely different ones and the drugs of choice will be different.

Haha. I actually think pharm at my school is pretty well-taught!

I love how the "anticipated cost" of care from the insurance company never quite matches up to what is actually charged. I don't forsee myself getting any more cleanings from my dentist with my current insurance plan if each trip that "should be 100% covered" is going to cost me $50. I loathe insurance companies. Crooked fcks.

It's kind of like the male/female theory: can't live with them, can't live without them.

9 more days of Sub-I/medical school left. I can't wait to be back in the ED. 👍
