San Antonio
Tech

I think I actually liked Tech better, but San Antonio would be better for my wife, once she's done with her degree.

At least not to the "small animal sacrifices"! :scared:

Yes, especially since science teachers are known for their small animal collections in their classrooms!!!

For s***s and giggles, I logged on to TMDSAS this morning.

Looks like I can still change how I ranked my schools. I wouldn't do that of course, and it probably won't count, but I was thinking their website would change somehow. I'm a dork!

UTH
A&M

My list looks bleak compared to some of the others posted here, but what the hey! I had a hard time figuring out which school I liked best. In the end I had to go with Houston as my number one since I had to consider the bread winner's options too!!

However, I would be glad for an acceptance anywhere. To the Match Gods: I am grateful for any acceptance you are willing to grant me. I will be happy no matter what, and should I be given this gift, I will work to the best of my ability to do the best I can for anyone I can be of service to.

OK, back to work...

So due my infinite demotivation, I was looking up info on the match... again. Tech had this on their website:
  • Applicants who have an official offer they received during the rolling admissions period do not have to submit a rank list in the match.
  • Each medical school will also submit a list of interviewed applicants ranked in order of acceptability on the basis of factors considered in the selection process by TTUHSC SOM.
  • The final preference from each applicant and the ranked lists from the respective schools are entered into a computer database. The database matches the applicant with the highest choice medical school that ranked the applicant high enough to be selected.
  • Applications are automatically withdrawn from all schools with a lower applicant preference than the school to which the applicant is matched.
  • Applications will remain active to all schools with a higher applicant preference for possible acceptance later if the applicant is placed on the school’s alternate list.
  • For more information on the Texas State Match, please visit the TMDSAS website.
Maybe it's accurate, maybe it's not, but it's written in slightly different language, which helped me understand the process slightly better... I think. I guess my fate is dependent on a computer. Probably shouldn't have kicked my computer this morning when it wouldn't start up...

Yeah... I mostly started that frenzy. I think this time we'll take it a bit more naturally.

See, I look at such stats from a different perspective. I'm thinking I want to do ER. So high local murder rate = better trauma education, right?

You're going to A&M? You're my new best friend with the ER/murder comment (sorry that sounds creepy). I want to go into ER too. I work there and I LOVE IT.

apparently you have to rank schools even if you prematched to all the ones you interviewed at. I didn't know and only accepted UTMB and declined the others. However, I got an email this morning (1/16) from TMDSAS telling me to rank my schools. Thank god they didnt just drop me! lol 🙂

Yeah, I only interviewed at one school but I just wanted to join in all the fun. Ever since I read that Diana had four interviews last year and no match, I'm getting even more pessismistic about my chances, but I am trying to hold onto hope here. Looking for a miracle...

Not creepy at all. I'm totally psyched about going into ER. Current physicians that I have shadowed with tell me it's probably because I'm probably both an adrenaline junkie as well as a masochist, and have all tried to talk me out of it. "Do derm. It will make your like SO much easier." My motto - "This ISH isn't suppose to be easy. That what makes it so much fun!"

As for being at A&M, 'm not into college station that much. I don't know if it's because I want to be close to Scott and White ASAP or if it's because I'm a "T-Sip."

Personally, I'm thinking I'm going to do all 4 in Temple. I mean, what's the point of living in a college town at this point anyway? Might as well start setting up my tent in the on-call room from day one, right?

Plus, I don't want to have to think about moving after MS-2 when I should be concentrating on blowing Step 1 out of the water.

What about you AggieSean? Staying around CS for another 2?

Hey man, you never know. Like you said, sometimes people with 4 int's don't get matched, but sometimes someone with only 1 int can even get a pre-match offer.

I haven't gotten accepted anywhere, but if I get to go to A&M I'm gonna try and do all 4 in Temple too. Studying in a hospital, now thats what i'm talkin'bout!😀

Sooo... burning question. How does A&M to anatomy practical if you're in Temple? And how do they even do anatomy lab?

I should know these things since I know people that go there, but I actually don't think I know anyone doing the 4 in Temple. So someone who interviewed there please catch me up 🙂

The email they sent out a while back specifically said that you dont have to rank anything if the pre-match you accept is your number 1... hopefully they will figure it all out

Nope! I will be in Temple for all 4 years, for the reasons you mentioned (not the t-sip part 😛, but I have to say you're making great progress by referring to yourself as such). As well, it'd be nice for my wife not to have to find yet another job.

As far as ER is concerned, it's a pretty sweet deal. Here is my ER rant:
No pager, no call, no rounding (which I hear is terrible), and once you're home, that's it! No being called back to do anything or being called by nurses for orders. You set your own schedule, so if you wanna work 3 weeks on then 1 week off to do whatever, you can! If you want to work lots of shifts 1 month, then cut it back a little the next month, you usually can. Shifts are long and intense, and yeah nights, weekends, and holidays are part of it, but don't most specialties require this? At least you know that you're only working PART of a holiday, and you know well in advance of the fact. Even more, you have to be able to treat ANYthing that comes through that door, requiring a very broad base of medical knowledge, from cards to ortho to OB to neuro to psych. And procedures too! From reducing fractures, toenail removals, suturing ALL kinds of lacerations, putting in chest tubes, intubation, I&Ds, emergency dental work, episiotomies (yes, I've seen it), packing nosebleeds, etc. Trauma, CPR, DKA, COPD, all the fun medical emergencies too. Yeah, it's medicine "in a fishbowl" and you are always liable to be 2nd guessed by specialists and in-house, and they aren't always pleasant to deal with. Yeah you have to deal with what is sometimes an unpleasant patient population. But let me tell you, from what I've seen in 8 months (which isn't much, I know), it seems like it'd be really rewarding to have a family member thank you for being there for their loved one, and for knowing you did the right thing for someone. I mean, isn't that why we want to do medicine?
Yeah so I could go on and on about it, but I'll stop! And like I tell everyone, I want to go into it with an open mind, but boy I sure love the ER.

Cheers,
AggieSean

Man, you've sold me 👍

So even if 101 people have ranked school A as their # 1 and you didn't? What i'm trying to say is that who will win among Bob and Bill.

Bob: School ranked him 20 he rank the school 2.
Bill: School ranked him 40 he ranked the school 1.

Cycling, I'm not sure if I saw anyone answer you when you asked this question again so here goes.

Let's say in your scenario School A takes at least 40 people. Obviously, both Bob and Bill will match there. However, if school A only takes 30 people, only Bob will match. The order in which Bob ranks the school (#1 vs #2 etc.) only affects any school he ranks lower. Assuming Bob ranks School A number 2, once he matches there any school ranked #3 or lower on his list is dropped. He then waits to see if his #1 school accepts enough people to reach him on their list.

Basically, the schools can't see what number you ranked them (allegedly). So the fact that Bill appears to want to go to School A more than Bob is not something School A can see to take into consideration.

I hope this (more clearly) answers your question. If I'm off on this, someone please feel free to correct me! Good luck everyone, I didn't apply this cycle but I'm pulling for all of you! :luck: :luck: :luck:

Yup, short res too. And multitasking can be fun. When I told my interviewer that EM reminded me of my retail exp she just laughed, because they're so similar. First time I walked into a busy ED it seemed eerily familiar.

I would probably trust Sean's word more over mine, but I also do remember seeing cameras and mic's in the Anatomy lab at C.S. They said that students from Temple (and soon Roundrock) watch the lab and interact. I guess they do that while working at another lab in Temple (or Roundrock)?

The interactive stuff (mics and cameras) are because there may only be a live instructor in one place at a time. There are definitely tanks in both places. The instructor in Temple was so proud of the facility - they really showed it off to us. The camera they have in there has a 64x (I believe)optical lens. Pretty sweet.

Sweet! So that means that if I'm at A&M I'll be familiar with at least ONE person.

As for your rant, I agree 100%. Now, all I need you to do is talk to my mom, who is convinced that I'm a grade A *****.

"Go into plastics." "Go into derm."

It seems that simply getting into medical school is "nice" and "cute," but I run the risk of being blackballed out of the family if I (1) go to school outside of Texas or (2) go into emergency medicine.

P.S. I'll make a little bet with you AggieSean. If ATM beats us again next year in Austin, I'll be your personal scribe for the rest of MS1 and ALL of second year. But I'm not worrying about having to do that. Cause it ain't happening. Period.

Somewhere out there, Diana and TheRealMD are backing me up on that one.

You know, this year tu was 0-2 in "revenge" games (Kansas State, Texas A&M). You will be 0-1 next year as well. 🙂 The Shermanator is going to run all up and down on the Big 12. He's putting together a ridiculous staff and has picked up several more recruits, as opposed to losing them like everyone thought he would. 2008? The year of the Aggie. 👍

1. UTH
2. UTHSCSA
3. A&M
4. Tech (prematch)

Just checked my DMS-4.

Can you say "monothematic delusion?" I don't know if it's secondary to pathophysiology that is organic in nature, or if it's simply a result of drinking the maroon Kool-aid (R). Any future shrinks on the board care to chime in. I'm not big on the head stuff.

P.S. Texas = 11-1 (but no loss to ATM) and Big 12 Champs. Mark it down. :horns: I do, however, hope ATM beats the hell out of OU and Tech. I really hate those guys.

Anybody get a LMU change recently?

Mine changed to 011608, but I am guessing that TMDSAS is just going through all the files to make sure everyone entered the match preference correctly.... (just trying hard not to over-analyze and torture myself 😳)
