I sent two transcripts on the same day from different schools. (I'm still waiting for the third school cause of Fall 2023 grades). One school did National Student Clearing House, and it showed as received for TMDSAS after 1 week. The other school uses Parchment, and it still has not been marked as received by TMDSAS after almost 3 weeks.

dont worry friend! this happened to me too, I sent two via parchment on the same day, one was marked received way before the other which just happened this week. if you don't hear anything in a couple more weeks, then I'd call!

Do any Texas schools allow waivers for OChem 2 or allow you to take it online? Almost every non-TX school allows biochemistry to sub for Orgo 2, but some TX schools still say they require Orgo 2 and do not say anything about a substitution. I would really like to be able to work during my gap year to pay off debt and save money instead of taking Orgo 2 in the spring.

You can take it online as long as you take it for a grade and not pass/fail. What about a second OChem lab though? If your OChem I lab was worth 2 credits you should be good.
Baylor requires 2 semesters OChem but does not require a lab
Dell Med lets you get by with 1 semester Org +lab if you also have 2 semesters General Chem and 2 credits labs, UT Tyler same thing.
The rest of TMDSAS schools require Orgo 6 hours lecture + 2 hours lab

Ah, I may end up in a situation where I have to take organic 2 just in case I get accepted the Baylor then. It would be so nice to get a pre-match to one of the Texas schools before the new year so I know whether I need it or not but I know that’s rare especially for OOS.

I am also pretty sure that Long allows biochemistry to substitute for organic 2

Better ask Long specifically 😛

Sorry I wasn’t at my computer a minute ago. Here:

TL;DR it looks like biochem can substitute at Long!
Biochem can be used for biology or chemistry requirement according to their chart. It does not specify it can be used for Organic requirement though…
I’m not trying to be a downer.
You’ll just have to get in to Dell or Baylor!

RE: Dell, Baylor, and Long - I'm trying my best!!

I’m not sure if anyone will relate, but I noticed my brain has such a funny way of “moving the goal post” during the application cycle.

Initially, I applied pretty broadly to 15 OOS DO schools and all TMDSAS schools, thinking I’d be lucky to get even a single interview since I have not only pretty low stats (LM 63 for Texas) but also a big fat institutional action for academic suspension.

After receiving my first acceptance, I was blown away with excitement and disbelief…but now I’m constantly thinking, “But can I get into my first choice school?” This is so wild to me because this time last year, I was SURE I would never be able to become a physician because my practice MCAT scores were kicking my butt.

Anyways, I just wanted to remind myself and anyone else who might be in the same mindset as me that it’s pretty freaking amazing we’re going to be physicians pretty soon and helping out populations we dreamed of helping as kids 🙂

Definitely can relate! A couple schools I applied to were kind enough to humble me a bit though lol

I'm convinced schools know what applicants they're looking for and, since I wrote who I was into my app, I'll end up where I belong 😁

I did the same as you in regards to applying broadly (LM 64). I had great success with OOS DO schools but that was early on in the cycle. Now I’m just moving those goal posts and hoping maybe TCOM or TTU will give me a shot.

However, maybe you’re on to something. I struggled with the MCAT the first time I studied for it and got kicked out of my mother’s house a week before my second attempt.

Fortunately I got a job and a new place to live, studied for the MCAT again and scraped out a 509 back in January. 1 year ago I didn’t think I’d ever get into medical school, but now I’ve got 4 As. Even though they’re all to DO schools, they’ll get me to where I want to go.

Anyways, thanks for the reminder. It’s good to ground yourself in the present. 🙂

Same sitch for me!! Also applied broadly knowing in my heart I can be a great physician but having doubts in my uGPA holding me back, just DREAMING to get one II and go to any TX public school. Now with a pre-match and a few other interviews under my belt, I'm experiencing the same perspective shift. It makes me want to shout from the mountain tops "BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!!" and "DOORS OPEN WHEN YOU PUT IN WORK!!".

Keep your head up guys 😍

have any of yall sent update letters (pre-II/post-II). Was thinking of sending something pre turkey break, but not even sure if adcoms reading them until after break anyways...any advice in this regard or anyone else looking to/have sent out LOU/LOI this cycle?

Tbh I haven’t because all the advice I’ve gotten from adcoms when asking is they’ll maybe but probably not even consider it post II. i also haven’t had much else to add so I didn’t want my LOI to feel shallow

Here is how I am potentially thinking of ranking my schools:

1. Baylor
2. UTSW (Have not interviewed yet, but will soon)
3. UTMB
4. McGovern
5. TAMU
6. TTU Lubbock
7. TTU El Paso
8. SHSU (Pre-matched)

Reasons:

1. Baylor: Is P/F and USMLE is after core rotations. Also I am really interested in the MD/JD program. Plus Houston is a great location.
2. UTSW: Have family friends that go here. Great for competitive specialties + in house residency programs. Not a super big fan of the grading system. Far from home as well.
3. UTMB: Really really strong ties here. Fantastic location for me, really close to home. Just familiar with the area. Plus P/F even if internal ranking is there. Really strong Medical Humanities programs.
4. McGovern: Great location, access to the TMC. Everyone was super friendly at my tour
5. TAMU: has a Houston option after the first 18 months. Fantastic Medical Humanities options.
6. TTU Lubbock: Quite far from home but still great interview experience and great school
7. TTU El Paso: Even farther from home but overall great school. Doesn't seem to have as many opportunities for competitive specialties (which I am interested in)
8. SHSU: Pre-matched but I am interested in competitive specialties and it is a little unclear as to SHSU's outcomes since they have not graduated a class yet. But it is definitely a great school.

I thought UTSW was p/f?

UTSW also uses some* preclinical grades for AOA, and Baylor does not; however, Baylor keeps track of the top 15% of students in preclinical and reports it as a distinction in their residency letter... so I would consider them equal in that regard
Oh interesting, I did not know this. Thanks for the information.

For me, personally, I would rank Baylor over UTSW cause of location, TMC opportunities, grading/curriculum differences, the MD/JD program which I am looking into, and more opportunities with the Medical Humanities.

Edit: Would not necessarily mind the Temple campus, but would much prefer the Houston campus. But, as of right now, I don't think this is playing much of a role in my ranking because I am much more interested in the opportunities at Baylor as a whole.

Here's my lineup currently:

1. UTSW (prematched)... And that's it haha
2. McGovern
3. TAMU (prematched)
4. Baylor
5. Long
6. UTMB
7. SHSU (prematched) withdrew
you’re so awesome for withdrawing the SHSU prematch❤️

My list priority is

1. Cost (every Texas school is equal here)
2. Location
3. Curriculum

So my rankings are

1. TCOM - Literally grew up here and would be so so happy to stay near my parents. Was the first medical school I’ve ever even heard of and first I visited. Every TCOM physician I’ve worked/shadowed with has been the type of doctor I want to be. All the students seem to absolutely love the school. Rotations in DFW would let me work with physicians I’ve scribed for. Absolutely LOVE JPS hospital too.

Being a DO school, taking 2 board exams will probably suck but OMM is pretty cool to me (famous last words).

2. TAMU - Absolutely LOVED my interview here and gives me the opportunity to come back to Dallas. Culture seems super welcoming but I’ve heard mixed things about the in house exams. Lots of in house residency options too!

3. UTMB - I love Galveston and pretty much visited here all my life. Have family that graduated from UTMB as well. NBME exams are a huge plus to me and also has incredible residency options.

4. SHSU - Honestly, Conroe has my freaking heart. The area is absolutely beautiful and the interview experience (being the only in person school in Texas I think?) was so great. Only cons I believe most of us will have is that it’s still new and yet to graduate a class. I have no doubts they will match strong. Also, not sure how far students are driving for rotations but I’ve heard it’s not the best.

I am also heavily considering location as one of my top factors.

Does anyone have insight if McGovern is FULLY NBME after first semester? Weirdly I’m hearing mixed review on that.

As was discussed in the past, you have about 18.18% chance of being matched to Temple so you should add that into your consideration if you are using location into your equation. Not sure if you are able to apply to JD upfront and that locks in your location?

Good that you withdrew and providing an opportunity for others.

Curious why Baylor is 4 and not 1 unless you are determined to attend UTSW since you put them down as 1 and prematched.

First, I'd say I'm pretty dead-set on UTSW at this point and I don't see it easily being knocked off the #1 spot. I still want to tour TAMU given the opportunity, however, which is why I haven't withdrawn that prematch.

To answer your question, Baylor is #4 for me because:

1. Though I have no doubt Baylor did their due diligence as an institution to transition to their new 1-year curriculum appropriately, I picked up on some genuine awkwardness that is the result of this change (eg, MS2s studying the same things as MS1s and not being able to provide as tailored resources/insight). Though I'd imagine this would be a non-issue for many traditional students matriculating, for me as a non-trad (who majored in a non-biological science initially and has the bare minimum TMDSAS bio prereqs under my belt), I'd feel more comfortable in a curriculum that is more established.

2. The Temple campus. Now don't get me wrong, I lived for 5+ years in Temple and I adore that place. I even gave it a shout-out in my application because I love returning there frequently to volunteer/visit friends in the area. I didn't think anything of it at the start of the cycle because I genuinely believed I would be happy there (and still would), but after seeing the TMC on 2nd look day at McGovern I was gobsmacked. If I ended up at the Temple rather than Houston, I would always be left thinking "What if" which is why I chose McGovern as #2.

Does anybody else have any input on what I've said above? I'd be curious to hear the thoughts of my fellow Texans 🙂

I think those are valid. They were definitely points I was and still am considering. As a non-science major I definitely understand your first point. As for your second point this is something I am still assessing personally.

I am not here to change your mind but I see a bit of a fallacy in studying same as MS2s for those applying now.

The first batch is already in and they are the guinea pigs. when you get there the MS2 will be trained to teach you what they know.
I know @MCAThiccy wants to teach what he knows to MS2s but unfortunately he has no MS2s. 🙂 He probably already has all the tutorials ready for next batch.

Fair to say that reasoning is a bit fallacious, though I am curious what 2 separate years moving into clinicals at around the same time is going to look like in Houston.

@MCAThiccy and his cohort on the other hand are gonna have free reign at the Temple campus 🤓

Lots of respect for ranking TCOM as #1. I'm from Ft. Worth originally and currently live in the area. The medical district there is superb w/ JPS, Harris BS&W, Medical City, and Children's. Would love to interview there!

Thanks @texasvandy it is true that when we finished our cardio, respiratory, and Renal block the MS2s were finishing their block as well. However, they had just wrapped up about 80% of their overall courseload such as psychiatry and hematology. I did give some tutorials to some upperclassmen though and I thought that was fun.
I will say that both of @stere0psis points are valid and that if this person feels obligated to study at the Texas Medical Center, then by all means they are up to do that. I think that all the medical institutions and medical schools in Texas, are strong and produce amazing students who become amazing clinicians. You can’t go wrong in Texas. I love Baylor, and so far Baylor is treating me just fine.

My rankings list will most likely be:
1 - Baylor: Their curriculum is extremely attractive and I really like it being true p/f. I am excited for either Temple or Houston as I think I will gain great experiences at either place! I really hope to match here...
2 - Mcgovern: I really like the community at Mcgovern, but my second interview didn't go well here I think...
3 - Long: I like the resources there and the faculty seem really nice!
4 - TAMU (Prematched): I really like the idea of being able to go to one of their satellite campuses after 1 year at College Station. I could end up liking CS and staying for all 4 years though.
5 - UTMB: Their community is so amazing, but I do not like the location of Galveston unfortunately
6 - UT Tyler: Although I loved this school and their mission (and how it aligns with my passion for primary care), I don't think I can live in East Texas without a good support system there (aside from the caring faculty).
7 - Tech Lubbock (Prematched, withdrew).
8 - PLFSOM (Prematched, withdrew)
9 - UH (Prematched, withdrew)

Just wondering, what’s the reasoning why people withdraw from some prematches but decide to keep schools ranked below a prematch (which means they would never match there cus a prematched school is ranked higher)?

Is it for potential scholarships that could change your decision later? Or because you might change your mind later

For me, it was based on location! I think I prefer CS over galveston, which is why I will probably put TAMU over UTMB.

The overlap does happen across more than just 2 batches. There are people doing additional rotations even in year 4.

Even in the same batch, not everyone does the same rotation at the same time since rotations can't accommodate 150-230 people in one rotation. They are doing them in smaller batches and take turns during different months (one group does peds while other does obgyn and another IM).

The required rotations are completed usually in 14 months. Then people start doing sub-i in other areas and so it keeps going as long as someone has time and wants to enroll.

I did give some tutorials to some upperclassmen though and I thought that was fun.
Knowing about your subject tutorial videos, I expected you to start doing the same in medicine!

How are they doing step 1 scheduling, i.e., do they still stagger them into end of 3rd year?

1 - Baylor: Their curriculum is extremely attractive and I really like it being true p/f. I am excited for either Temple or Houston as I think I will gain great experiences at either place! I really hope to match here...
2 - Mcgovern: I really like the community at Mcgovern, but my second interview didn't go well here I think...
3 - Long: I like the resources there and the faculty seem really nice!
4 - TAMU (Prematched): I really like the idea of being able to go to one of their satellite campuses after 1 year at College Station. I could end up liking CS and staying for all 4 years though.
5 - UTMB: Their community is so amazing!
Nice of you to release the schools you probably wont attend so others are able to get prematches. It is good karma.
I have usually seen people rank UTMB ahead of TAMU and you might still do that if you get a prematch with money or something. 🙂 This is the standard ranking people usually use in Texas for 1-5.
