:idea:Well, it's that time of the year again when PCAT examinees rush to their mailboxes every day hoping to receive those elusive PCAT score reports.

To assist future PCAT test takers, it would be best if there was one thread where people can view or request other opinions on their own PCAT scores rather than having to search multiple threads with obscure titles. So, here goes (this is a work in progress🙂)! Please, please, please keep the score reports and "Yay! I got my scores!" to this thread.

Note: If you really know how the scoring works and just want an opinion on your scores, then just go to Section V in the second post in this thread.🙂

Thread Outline
I. Your Score Report
II. Your Scores
III. The popular "Are my scores good?" question.
IV. The popular "Do I need to retake the PCAT?" question
V. The Final Verdict
VI. Your Score Versus Your School's Average

I. Your Score Report

You should receive a regular, letter-sized envelope with about a sheet or two of paper. One that them should be a plain sheet with your scores. Basically, this sheet lists each scaled score with the accompanying percentile score for each section followed by your composite score which is a percentile based on the averaged scale score from the five sections. You will see your writing score separate from the other sections. Rather self-explanatory to me......

II. Your Scores

You mostly want to focus on your percentile rank, most particularly the composite score. That is the number that adcoms focus on during the primary review that determines if you get an interview. Some schools may go in-depth into your scores, but that composite score is the first tell.

Just as a reminder, your percentile score distinguishes your performance from examinees from a 1998-2003 standard testing group. However, adcoms compare your score to everyone in their applicant pool. Simply put, a 70th percentile means that you performed better than about 70% of the examinees during the aforementioned 1998-2003 period. The higher the score, the better off you will be.

Addendum: There have been many questions on SDN inquiring about the nature of the three-digit scaled scores one finds on the score report and how that score is used to get one's percentile score. To be honest, nobody outside of relations with Harcourt understands the system or even the true number of questions needed to earn a 90th percentile or any other score. Perhaps this is best explained in a hypothetical situation. After each exam, Harcourt examines the pool of test takers and derives a scale that corresponds to a scaled score. One earns a certain scaled score based on the number of correct questions answered. This scale is different between examinations and between sections to account for the slight differences in difficulty across test dates and perhaps even test forms within the same testing date. Te scaled score one gets corresponds to the aforementioned 1998-2003 pool. Based on past research on this forum, it seems that a 400 in any section will result in a 50th percentile and a 430 is "worth" the same for every testing date for example. Therefore, one is being compared to that standard testing group but any changes in the exam now versus back then is accounted for through the derivation of a new scale that accounts for that. It's just that the number of correct questions needed to earn a certain scaled score fluctuates and is determined for each PCAT administration separately. So, nobody really knows how many questions need to be answered correctly in order to be in a certain percentile.

III. The popular "Are my scores good?" question.

The most prevalent question that examinees have after receiving their scores is whether the scores are good enough for admission into pharmacy school. That leads to the corollary question to whether the examinee should retake the PCAT. Before we continue, it's best to establish some guidelines. The criteria I am about to present is not a strict rule. It is based on generalizations of PCAT worthiness at schools. This is just advice.

First of all, averages are just that = averages. Just because you don't make your school's PCAT average doesn't mean your application is doomed. People get in with low PCAT scores due to a number of reasons, like:
  • Having a high GPA with great pharmacy experience and LORs
  • Having a great interview
  • ..and...having great "contacts" in the adcom, like a dad or someone
If one looked at the PCAT score distribution at each school, it would probably resemble something like a grade distribution we often see after taking an exam. That is, a few students get As, many get around Bs to Ds with the peak at Cs or the average and/or median score, and a few fantastically bomb the exam. So for competitive PCAT scores, you do have to meet the average score for competitiveness, you want to literally be in the middle of the pack. Sure, you want your scores to stand out, but the answer to the question "Are my PCAT scores good enough" simply asks whether your scores are a liability on your application making a retake of the PCAT prudent and advisable.

So, I think a better gauge for "competitiveness" is through the competitive range. Simply put, this range represents the majority of the school's incoming class. Ideally, you want a score that is at least in the range occupied by the middle 50% of students that takes out the top 25% PCAT students that get in and the bottom 25% who get in due to the other factors I mentioned earlier. Since each school has different distributions, I roughly set a range of five percentiles plus or minus the school's PCAT average. So for a school with an average of 80, the competitive range is about 75-85. Your score is competitive in that range, but it doesn't stand out from other applications nor is it a blemish on your application. Remember, I am speaking in general.

IV. The popular "Do I need to retake the PCAT?" question

You need to consider your whole package as it affects the answer to this question:
  • Your stats (GPA, pharmacy hours worked) and LORs
  • Your interpersonal ability needed for an effective interview
  • Your writing skills (PCAT writing score, school-specific essays, PS)
  • Your "contacts"
If you have greatness in the above, than having a lower than competitive PCAT won't hurt as much versus the average applicant. If you lack some of the above, then you probably need a higher PCAT to compensate. For the purposes of this thread, we'll just consider how the scores look without any influence from other factors.

Not at all.

From their website:
"The average composite PCAT score of applicants admitted in 2010 was in the 77th percentile."

So you're above the average. They don't have any minimum required PCAT scores (either composite or individual section), so your quant score is fine since your composite is well competitive.

80 is nothing to scoff at. Nice job. 👍

ETA: Also from the website: "View component and composite PCAT scores below the 50th percentile with particular concern although there are no minimum PCAT scores." I'm assuming you're going to apply this cycle - they don't accept Jan PCAT scores for 2012 matriculation anyway. I'd definitely apply anyway, and be ready for the question if they decide to ask it.

After you get your preliminary composite score, does that change after they grade your essay? Or is it a separate grade on its own?

Composite-95 ---> okay WTF. I've looked at people who've gotten 94 composite and had way higher scores in each of the sections than I.

I'm so confused, there must be a mistake but i keep staring at the prelim score report and it says 95 composite. Does anyone else have anything similar/ think this is weird?

I am wondering the same thing. My composite seems higher but I think it's because today's exam was harder than the other exams that people took. I thought the chemistry was much harder than the pearson exams.

So I got my preliminary today and I was wondering if I should retake the PCAT:
Verb: 416/73

QA: 413/64
Chem: 418/72
Composite: 415/73

Any thoughts?

This is the second time I take the PCAT. English is my second language, so my VA and RC score are low. However, I did have improvement since last time I took the test.

VA: 401/50 (my first time was 27)
Biology: 421/80
RC: 399/43 (my first time was 17)
QA: 407/54
Chem: 422/77

Composite: 410/64 (my first time was 51)

My overal GPA: 3.7
I had 2 academic awards
Volunteer in ER hospital for ~ 100 hours
Volunteer at Hospice for ~ 100 hours (2-3 hours/week for 1 year)

Should I retake? What is my chance? What schools should I apply to?

Please guide me!! Thank you a lot.

No, you are good to start applying! Go for it! :luck:

I graduated from a Top 25 B-school in 2004, worked as a manager at an investment firm for a few years and HATED it. I went back to school in 2009 and am finishing my final Ochem and Bio this semester. Currently have a 3.6GPA

I'm really worried about my math score. I didn't study a single day for the exam and I haven't taken a math class since 2001. Though I did get an A back then haha.

I volunteer in an ER and am a state certified tech

Verbal: 86
Biology: 80
Reading Comprehension: 43 (what)
Quantitative: 39 (I swear I'm not a stupid)
Chemistry: 73
Composite: 69

I'm not trying to go to the best of the best, I'm 29 and just want to practice in the profession and attend a decent school. ANY advice would be much appreciated!

You've got a solid GPA and a 69 isn't a bad score at all. I'd guess that you'll have a pretty good shot at most schools, but if you're determined to get into a relatively competitive school (check out the schools you're interested in to see what their average accepted GPA and PCAT scores are and how you stack up) then you might consider retaking. Normally I'd definitely say don't bother, but math is probably the one section where a bit of review and prep work could seriously boost your score. I'd still say don't bother retaking, but it's your call.

Took the PCAT for the first time yesterday and did better than expected considering I didn't think I studied enough for it and crammed in the end.

My GPA is around 3.2-3.3 and I have 200+ hours volunteering at a hospital pharmacy. I also do undergraduate research at my university. My LOR's from pharmacists should be decent-good but I'm having a little difficulty in choosing a professor to ask because I don't know any of them that well. Should I retake and apply next year for a more competitive application or apply this year? UH and Texas Tech would be my top 2 choices and Texas A&M Kingsville is my 3rd choice.

Thanks!

79th is good from what I have seen and your GPA is decent as well. I would most certainly apply.

I just took the Pcat for the first time on Sep 28. This is my preliminary report:
VA- 53
Bio - 76
RC - 65
QA - 97
Che-96
Composite - 90

I'm happy with my composite but so disappointed with VA, Bio and RC score. I know VA and RC are my weakest but I expected I would score higher in Bio. QA and CHE help to raise my composite. I don't know if the score of each section is considered as important as the composite since I didnt score high in VA, Bio and Rc.
I'm planning to apply to Texas schools for Fall 2012. Texas schools are very competitive and have very early deadline -_-.
PS: I just transfer to 4-year university this fall so I don't have gpa from my university yet but my gpa from cc is 3.96 (got a B in writing 1), science gpa is 4.0.
I have 100hrs experience in volunteering in hospital, other leadership and honors activities.
I'm currently working as registered pharm tech at walgreens.

I just took the Pcat for the first time on Sep 28.

Whut? Are you asking if you should retake a 90 composite? JUST SAY NO. Calm down, Mr. Type A 😉, and pat yourself on the back for a solid performance.

The only mentions of minimum section scores I have seen have been 35 & 50... even your lowest is above that. With your other stats, knock 'em dead, killer. If the schools you want to go to have an average PCAT score for their previous classes posted on their sites (a lot of them do), I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised.

There are my scores from the sept. 28 pcat. Here goes nothing...

Verbal ability: 73
Bio: 96
Chem: 93

Quantitative: 83

What do you guys think? Retake or no retake? Really bummed out by that 34 in reading comp but super happy about my chem and bio. I am so torned right now.

Do not retake

There are my scores from the sept. 28 pcat. Here goes nothing...

The only reason I'd retake is if your favorite school(s) had a minimum section score they accept. In my survey of websites, I believe I saw 1 school that had a hard cut-off of 35 for a couple sections, but that was one out of 25+ schools, so I'm willing to wager it's rare.

If you're not applying to a school with a cut-off, you're golden. 👍

Hey didn't want to make a thread so I'll just ask here:

When I registered for the PCAT, they ask you to select the schools you wish to send them to... Well, I added all of my schools but failed to select the very first school/option which was PharmCas Waterloo... Does this mean that none of my schools will be receiving my PCAT score?

From what I understand, if you did send your scores to any school that participates in PharmCAS, PharmCAS will receive the scores that way.

I think one of us is confused. On the UF admissions, it says:

"Applicants are required to submit official test scores directly to PharmCAS each time the test is taken; use Pharmacy College Code Number 104. PCAT scores sent directly to University of Florida College of Pharmacy are not accepted and will not be reviewed."

I did not select 104, which is PharmCas Waterloo (I think)

Also, when it says that the deadline for all applications is Feb. 1, does that mean that I have to submit my application by Feb. 1st or that they receive it by Feb 1st? (Meaning I would have to send it out weeks prior? How long does it take the application to get to the school using PharmCas?)

Several people have also made the same mistake. They have reported calling Pearson & being told that if you designated any PharmCAS school, the scores would be sent to PharmCAS instead of to the school directly. But y'know what? I'd suggest you call Pearson directly. They'll probably have you pay to designate PharmCAS to receive your scores.

PS: PharmCAS thread is here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=822915

According to a post by JenAthay, the director of PharmCAS, your PharmCAS application must have all of the items required by the school received prior to the deadline. PharmCAS can process transcripts after the deadline.

Just wondering if anyone thinks my results are competitive as I am worried about the VA, RC, and writing which seem low (correct me if I'm wrong, not trying to nit pick)...I am fluent in English I just don't think writing is my strong suit, my school grades are good, I've had like ~90 hours of experience volunteering in a Pharmacy. Let me know what you guys think! Thanks!

Note: I am applying to the University of Toronto if anyone knows any specifics 🙂

Smh. Should I retake the Pcats? Some school doesn't require PCATs and the other schools I am looking at are looking for above 60 percentile in Chem and Bio. What should I do? My overall gpa is above a 3.0, I am a licensed pharmacy tech in the state of NJ and an Unit Clerk in the ER. I also have a Bachelor's in Biological Sciences. What to do?

The highest I've seen any school's "minimum" was that a particular CoP would "look with concern" on any section / composite score less than 50. You're well above that. A 94 composite is incredibly competitive - actually, we're comp score buddies. 😀 Most people are pulling a 3/3 on writing, so a 3/3.5 is above average. As is a 68 or 69 section score.

DO NOT RETAKE DO NOT

In fact, pat yourself on the back & brag to everyone you meet for a period not shorter than two weeks. 😉

University of Toronto's website (http://pharmacy.utoronto.ca/programs/bsc/admissions/faqs.htm):
As examples, the following preliminary minimum scores were required for eligibility to proceed to the interview for the 2010 admission cycle: Conventions of Language 3, Problem Solving 2.5, Composite Percentile 50, Chemistry percentile 50, Biology percentile 20, Quantitative Ability percentile 20, Reading Comprehension percentile 20, and Verbal Ability percentile 20. The preliminary minimum scores required for eligibility to proceed to the interview for the 2011 admission cycle were as follows: Conventions of Language 3, Problem Solving 2.5, Composite Percentile 20, Chemistry percentile 20, Biology percentile 10, Quantitative Ability percentile 10, Reading Comprehension percentile 20, and Verbal Ability percentile 10. Applicants are cautioned that individual scores are assessed within a competitive pool and the measures provided above for evaluating your own scores are provided as rough guidelines only. Applicants are also cautioned that PCAT thresholds used for final selections may be higher than those used for selecting applicants for an interview.

Was bribery or threats of violence involved?

No threat or intimation of violence or greenbacks under the table were necessary. I constructed sound alternatives to my proposed course and then ran a verbal bulldozer through them. I didn't feel it was good enough to make a strong case why I was right; I also needed to show the alternatives (to the extent permitted by the time limits) were wrong. I was not terribly wedded to the conventional essay structure, either.

@ work right now so I don't know the exact % on my PCAT, but I know I got a 82% Composite on my June PCAT; I got a 61% on my Chem (>_>) and a 70something in Reading Comp, everything else was 85% or above and I got a 2.0/3.0. Considering that I decided to stop my PhD in Biochemistry earlier this year after 2 years and deciding to go Pharmacy and not really studying for this PCAT AND not realizing they changed the format...I consider that I did okay...

Here is my question: I live in Oklahoma and I probably won't go to an out of state pharmacy school. So that leaves me with two options - SWOSU or OU. SWOSU allows you to apply all year long and OU only allows you to apply for the fall semester. Should I just apply to SWOSU for the Spring of 2008 or wait and apply to OU and SWOSU for the fall of 2008??

And uh yeah...should I even bother retaking the PCAT again?

Another issue that I currently have right now is that I have been trying..and trying...and TRYING to find a job at the pharmacies around town (Stillwater) and I have been trying for almost six months and I have had no luck finding a tech job...not even volunteering; is that normal or do I just have horrible luck??

Hello all I am thinking is there may not be any opening maybe because now they require pharmacy techs to attend school now. If you already have tech license it should not be a problem. It also depends on how many pharmacies in the area. Keep applying and calling the pharmacy.

Hi! I'm a junior in college and planning on applying this coming summer.
I took the PCAT first time today and results are following:
verbal: 58
bio: 90
reading: 34(I was shocked since I've been getting good scores on Dr.Collins's practice exams :scared:)
chem: 88
QA: 74
comp: 76
overall accumulated GPA is around 3.3
My friend told me that 80-85 percentile is considered competitive and if I don't have a competitive GPA 3.5-3.6ish (which I do not) to compensate for the PCAT score, I should try it again.
Should I retake it in this coming july? Do people tend to do better or worse on their second try?
Thanks for helping!

I'd retake it because I know I'd do better the next time around. Also, there is a lot of study time between now and July. Enough to beef up your vocabulary, etc.

However, your best scores (chmistry and bio) are very good and many schools weigh these heaviest. I would not be afraid to apply with these scores (many people tank the RC section). The stats for UofA, a top ten school, has their average composite for last year's accepted students at 68 and chemistry at 74. You exceed both. Take it again, don't stress, and just make sure you are well rounded.

I'd rather take a genuine student with a 76, than a cocky, arrogant student who flaunts his 99. The UA has turned away many 99 percentile student because of attitude.

I feel as if I have reach a plateau. My GPA is ~3.5 and will be applying for UofF and Ohio State, but right now I'm still debating if I should give it a third attempt... 🙁

Engish is not my native language so I've been struggling with VA and RC. Despite spending the past 3 months improving my reading comprehension skills and vocabulary using Kaplan PCAT/MCAT (reading) and Dr. Collins/Barrons GRE (vocabulary), the improvement just aren't significant. I feel as if I have reach a plateau. My GPA is ~3.5 and will be applying for UofF and Ohio State, but right now I'm still debating if I should give it a third attempt... 🙁

73 is really not so bad, so it is hard to say if you would benefit from taking it again. If you are not a FL resident you are borderline wasting your time applying to UF, it's like 95% in state acceptance and pretty competetive. Not trying to discourage you, I just want you to know that going in. I have no clue how competitive Ohio is.

Your GPA is fine and your PCAT is not so bad, I suspect you will be fine. Only applying to two schools is a bit tricky, but good luck!

I'm a bit down and would really appreciate some feedback...

My opinion..... your chem and biology scores are great. Schools tend to look at these more than the rest. According to the stats provided by the University of Arizona, a top ten school, the average composite for accepted students last year was 68.8, and the average chemistry (which they look at before composite) was 74. You are better than average and blew away the chemistry. My biggest concern with your PCAT is the significant drop in verbal. Talk to an advisor at the school you want to attend and ask their opinion. I would probably take it again it July, but start studying now! 30 points higher would have landed you in the 80s. Otherwise, I wouldnt stress too much. If you are well rounded with a good GPA, you will get interviews with that PCAT, and that's when you shine. A friend of my got interviews at all 5 places he applied to with a 49 composite.

Here are my score for this Jan PCAT:
24 Verbal
94 Biology
60 Reading Comp
95 Quant
93 Chem

86 Composite

I am looking for any pharmacy schools in Texas. I have 4.0 GPA but don't have any related working or volunteer experience. Can anyone give me some suggestion should I retake the test? Because I fear 24% for verbal section is just too low to apply any school.

to hiting56:
Some schools only look at the composite. You have a decent score, I had a 68 on my VA and 35 on my RC, I did not have trouble getting interview invites. For some school that look at each section, I send an attachment with my secondaries explaining the reason for low RC and VA and what I am doing to fix my weakness. Don't be hesitate to apply with that score. I wouldn't retake it.

As for the experiences, you need to find one asap. Some school view experience as important as the gpa, so you need to start looking now.

Thank you Nelcovp! what material do you recommend to prep the PCAT other than dr.collins?

Hi guys,

I've been reading through the threads at SDN and I'd just like to thank everyone because you guys are all so informative!

I just wrote my PCAT today and I'm not too happy about it but here it goes:

VA: 32 😱
Bio: 71
RC: 43 😕
QA: 88
Chem: 91
Comp: 73

I knew my VA and RC are bad, but I didn't think they would be thaat bad. I'm just not a very good RC person and i guess not a very good VA person either.

I'm currently in first year at UBC and my first term average was 82.8% (I'm not quite sure what GPA that is since UBC average calculator only gave me that).

I have roughly 60-70 hours of experience in pharmacy. What are the odds that I get in?

VA: 32 😱

QA: 88

Comp: 73

[...]What are the odds that I get in?

Check to see if your schools have any section minimums, but 73 is a decent composite - about average for many accepted classes. It's on the border of retaking in my opinion, but make sure you've got a plan not only for improving the areas you struggled, but also for maintaining your highest scores.

To answer the question you asked, try posting in the WAMC thread here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=750492

Composite- 421/82
[...]Do you think I should retake?

No. Your lowest score is in the 40s, and is not a science score. 82 is a respectable composite. Check with the schools you're going to apply to & see if they have a section minimum, but I wouldn't retake.
