The Underdog Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha we'll see! I'm assuming that's where you're going?

unless I get off of the waitlist at my top school, I will most likely be going to NOVA which would definitely be fine with me. As long as I was going to a school with established quality rotation sites and a curriculum that I felt confident in, I'd be happy. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but it also sounds like NOVA grads are pretty known in the hospitals in FL.

It's one of the reasons why I couldn't commit to touro-ny which would have been really close to home (and which would have probably helped if I wanted to practice closer to home as well). I really liked touro though and would have went there if I felt the rotation sites were more established.

I'd say the only thing I'm iffy on about NOVA is the 3 month rural rotation.

Just wanted to check back in here because I posted here a while ago.

I had an interview at Touro-NY and got the call last night that I have been accepted and will be attending!

hi guys,

Are acronyms of locations, facilities, etc... acceptable on essays if the full names are listed elsewhere (non-essay portions) in the primary and/or secondary app?

thanks.

I would write it out in full once and follow it with the acronym right after, then after that use the acronym.

I love this thread 🙂 I've been following it silently, and now I've finally joined SDN to share my admiration for all you guys!!! I'm likely going to be an underdog myself once I graduate this year, but everyone here has really given me more courage to pursue my dreams (though I kind of discovered my call to medicine a little late compared to all the other undergrad pre-meds out there)...but anyway, congrats to everyone who's already made it in...and to the rest of you, I'm sure you will all make it. 🙂

omg, i just got destroyed by my last physics exam. And I have talked to a few med schools who have stated they are waiting for my physics grade from this semester because i got a C- in physics I the first time i took it. I just pulled a 78 on this exam although my first 2 exams where 102 out of 110 points(15%of my grade) and 100 out of 110 points(another 15% of my grade). he gives you extra problems on his exams for you to take advantage, so there are another possible 10 points on his exams. so 15% of my grade is a 78. im friggin pissed. damn you angular acceleration!. 10 percent of our grade is our lab grade which I have a 97 average and 10 percent of our grade is hw and attendance which i only missed 1 class and have a 99% hw average. our quiz makes up another 10 percent of our grade and i have an 83% quiz average, although im handing in the last one this week. 25 % of our grade is our final exam. im really hoping i pull off an A. i was just hoping that I didnt have to leave it all on the final. and now i do. this sux but ill get over it and move on......

anyways whats new with my fellow underdogs sinfest you decide which school yet?

ps my wife just brought me some hot cocoa to deal with the depression of this last exam.

that is some generous grading going on in your physics class. my physics classes were 2 or 3 tests a semester, multiple choice, so no partial credit for work. you either got it or you didnt. then a final of about 10 questions. each test counted once, the final counted twice. i wouldve killed for some help from hw, attendance, etc. oh well. you're done with it now, so relax.

omg i am by no means complaining. I have never had a prereq graded this easily. ever.. i can't believe homework or attendance actually counted. i wish hw counted for orgo. I would have killed that subject!. my orgo classes where graded the same way as you had described. 10-15 quested per exam. except we had 4 tests. we had our final test 2 days prior to the final. so yeah it was ruff. but needless to say. i **** myself once i saw this last grade. im hoping i do well on the final but your right. its over now. can't stress or strain over it too much. (youngs modulus is on the final lmao)

Your school must have been crazy if it didn't count homework. Every course I've taken counts homework for 10% of the grade.

I once got partial credit on one multiple choice question. Only time it happened. The professor put a problem about "releasing" energy, so I didn't account for that and gave my solution in "+" (he put both answers in the multiple choice). Since I did all the calculations on the sheet, he gave me 1 point.

sorry for more questions 🙁

1. Is it OK to use the term "DO" instead of ostepathic physician/med school in essays or is it too informal or something? It does save alot of characters.

2. For poster "presentations" listed on the apps, is the assumption that the person physically presented the poster at the conference, or can these be listed if the person was an author on the poster, but did not actually attend the conference and present the poster?

thanks again!

for the first one I would think yes. especially if your using osteopathic physician over nd over again in your essay, it may be good to break it up. Im not sure what anyone else thinks here but me personally I did a few times. but hey, ive got no interviews so i wouldnt go with my advice if other people wouldnt.

for the second one im sure you can be pretty specific, they won't care. if you were just an author its still pretty impressive. just be honest.

Hey guys, I haven't been too active posting in here, but I'm yet another underdog that's shown em we can do it! I got accepted to VCOM with a 25 mcat, so keep your heads up and kill those interviews.

Really? Did you go to a community college or something? Never once in my university was I given credit for HW, in fact until your post I hadn't even heard of the word "homework" since high school

I am jealous

Ended up deciding on Touro-CA to stay close to important people. But I'm still hoping for an AZCOM interview invite 🙂

You can't do anything but move on, so forget about that midterm and own the final!

If I was in your situation I think I would have done the same, I know that being close to my family and friends would be the deciding factor for me. It's always good to have a choice though! 🙂

Nice! Congrats on making a decision. Although I know nothing about Touro-CA (I cant apply there as a Canadian), Im sure it must be one hell of a school if you turned down NSU for it🙂 Good luck

It depends on the class. Some classes don't have homework at all, but in science courses and math courses we have to do problems online. My friend in grad school at USC does the same.

omg reading this again makes me crace it lol. she made 2 packets with milk and added marshmellows. she called it my bad exam remedy.

i am studying like a motha. Hopefully I kill it. although today i couldnt studycause i had orientation at umd and then class at night.

congrats on making the decision. I am sure it was a difficult one but If I was in your situation I probably would have done the same. I am sure other than on SDN touro produces great physicians. Good luck man and remember your education is what you make of it as you already know and probably heard on here a million times.

hmm. in my orgo and bio classes we never had hw. in physics and Gchem I totally did. I had quizes in all my classes but not bio/biochem/microbio/genetics. i guess it depends on the schools philosphy and the professors I guess. needless to say i bet it still boils down to you have to know the material to do well.

Absolutely. 10% homework is very negligible amount if you think about it.

Although its only 10% it can still make or break an A in the course. The rookie me (ie freshman me) usually thought "pssh its 10% im not gonna do all that work for a little %. My grades suffered haha. As soon as I Realized "every % counts", my GPA sky rocketed:laugh:I thought about it more, and realized one of my first year classes had something similar. they just didnt call it "homework" but essentially it was anyway:laugh:

I'm wondering who out there has gotten in/has interviews with super low scores (even for underdogs). The main page hasn't been updated in a while and with all the talks on these posts about schools already filling up their classes, I could use some motivators. 🙂 Anyone have a GPA around 3.0ish and MCAT less than 27 and getting some good news? Private message me if you prefer.

It's sad that the numbers mean so much and sadly I'm in a position that because I have gone through so much school (finishing masters and did some post-bacc science classes) that I'd have to take an obscene amount of courses to raise my GPA anymore....My extra-curriculars are honestly quite unique and impressive but as we all know at the end of the days the numbers weigh more. Now i'm rambling...

guy...reading these blogs are reality on earth, numbers mean a lot! But God is SUPERNATURAL and not of this earth and through trust in him and believing and accepting that he gave his only son for our sins all things are possible! I was told I was hopeless and need not to apply until I improved my MCAT score from all humans I spoke with. However, something working in my spirit led me to apply with a 3.4sciGPA 3.5overall, not to bad but there is better, and a 21M MCAT. I applied to and was accepted to KCOM quickly and offered a $10,000 scholarship. Give yourself to the LORD and all things are possible. If you have already done so take a moment and think if medicine is the real purpose of your life and ask that God's will is done. 🙂 It works and God Bless you in your efforts.

Hells yeah, Cali for life, although I still haven't heard from Western and will be in MO next year! still though, Cali for life!

this is so lucky. My chem professor put identical numbers with positive and negative signs on every endo/exothermic reaction problem.

Im proud to say I got ONE question wrong all semester... had to calculate an answer, it came out to 100K (arbitrary number, I dont remember). what do you know... 100C and 373C were both in the answers. of course Im so impulsive I just bubbled the first 100 I saw, regardless of units

tricky bastard got me. 🙂 it didn't happen again!

the point of this boring and brief story being, I kinda like a tricky exam if I know its coming.

If you're premed you'll have a lot of fun with the MCAT then.

from one serious underdog to the others:

ACCEPTED!!! 🙂

i cant believe it!

this underdog (3.5/25) had multiple acceptances (osteopathic and 1 allopathic) including my top choice where I will be attending, KCUMB.

No one give up hope.

Anything is possible.

Thanks for all the support from the SDN community. I don't post here a lot, but I lurk the forum often and really appreciate it!

KCUMB c/o 2015!!!

see you there in 7 months!

Anyone have any experience with how adcoms treat C- in a pre-req course? My university considered it passing (which I couldn't retake), but I just noticed that some school websites say just plain ole' C.

thanks.

Accepted to Touro-NY Today!!!!!! 3.2, 30 MCAT.

Poopyhead: (sweet name by the way) I had two C-. I retook one and got an A+, and am just finishing up the other and I am getting an A+ so far. ADCOMS will completely replace the grade🙂

My school had same policy so I took the retakes at other schools

I think you might have to retake the C- if it's in a prereq course. I think AACOMAS mentions that too. You could always retake it at another school.

It's on a school by school basis. Some medical schools will accept a C-, but most don't. I'd retake it just do you don't close doors to a bunch of school.

If you have a specific school you're in question about, though, just call them and ask.

gah, I feel so down now 🙁 I didn't notice that until now. I've already taken my MCAT (and did well), so I don't want to let it go to waste before I apply. I guess I'll just have to email them and see the answers. Otherwise, I'll have to try and fit in full time job + a class/lab 🙁

thanks for the heads up.

for all the underdogs, i am by far one of the under-underdogs! 2.97gpa, 3.76sciGPA, 23 MCAT. If I can do it, anyone can! Keep trying

Retake the courses at a Community College...one that is easy too. That might sound obvious, but thats what I did and I know of people who just retook it at their University and struggled with work to get a better grade than the first time.

Make it as easy as possible for yourself. If there is one thing I have learned from your American post-secondary system its that their is VERY easy schools and VERY hard schools, the gap is ridiculous. And yet the school you went to has little effect on you. At the end of the day, your GPA and your resume is what matters. So do what you can to easily earn that A🙂

It's a bit confusing though.

In my university,

Orgo I lecture + lab (5 units) > don't need to retake
Orgo II lecture + lab (4 units) > need to retake, it seems

I'm looking at the local CC,

Orgo I lecture + lab (5 units)
Orgo I lab (2 units) not sure why there is a separate lab for orgo I when there's already a lab in orgo I >.<
Orgo II lecture + lab (5 units)

So ya, anyone know how this works? I got the C- in orgo II and not orgo I, so my assumption is I don't have to retake orgo I? Is it a good idea (or even allowed) to retake orgo II without having to retake orgo I?

thanks.

o btw, do schools consider, interview, and/or grant acceptance to applicants while they're doing a retake or only after the retake course is completed?

as long as the class your retaking has the same or more credits you should be fine retaking orgo 2 and not orgo 1. if it has less credits then there is a problem.

as for schools waiting on your retake or not to view your file it depends on the rest of it. if you have a 3.9 science gpa but a C- in orgo 2 then they probably wont care that you have the C- and will review your file, interview and accept you with the stipulations that you will have to retake the C- prior to your matriculation to their school. If you have a low GPA and the retake will help it out a good amount then they might put you on hold prior to reviewing your application. there are a ton of factors into it but for the most part whatever the school chooses to do will be better for you because if you have a good gpa regardless of the grade they will go on with the process if they are interested and therefore you won't have to wait till later on in the process. If they decide to put you on hold its because they are probably interested but with your current gpa you would be a rejected applicant so they decide to put you on hold in hopes you do well in the course and it enhances your chances. so don't sweat it too much. it was ruff on me. im on hold at ALOT of schools right now. and im waiting for this semester to finish up. . so it depends on the rest of your application.

thanks for the reply guys!

got another question regarding LoRs. Is it better to wait until primary apps start (and getting an AACOMAS ID #) before requesting LoRs? Can we retroactively (or manually) add the ID # to our LoRs if our letterwriters didn't put the ID # on the LoRs themselves?

I would like to request LoRs as early as possible (ideally before application cycle starts) since I have doubts some of the people can finish the LoRs quickly.

Get your LORs in order ASAP. If you can request the LORs right now, I suggest you do that.

Things can come up for your letter writers, which may hold up the process of getting your letters. When it comes to the application process, there are not many things worse than waiting idly while having your application held up because of some small thing.

As for the ID# thing, none of my letters had my ID number on it. Depending on the letters service you end up using you may have an option to attach your ID# to your packet. My undergrads letter service required our AMCAS/AACOMAS ID# before sending out the letters packet.
