The Underdog Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Updated the front page. Glad to see some more LECOM-E interviews, we need some more Underdog representation over there. You people better not be going Seton Hill on me. I have already seen like 7 SDN'ers going Seton Hill!

If everything goes well, I might have to choose between Erie or Bradenton. 🙂 Gotta see the campuses I suppose. I hear Erie has nice facilities. As long as I can do the PBL, I'll be happy.

Just got invited to interview at LECOM-E in October! I'm a re-applicant... interviewed back in May and was placed on the waiting list but never heard back after. Hopefully it works out this time! Good luck to all of you still waiting to hear back :xf:

This maybe a wierd question, but would anyone care to exchange there personal statement with me for feedback purposes? I blindly submitted mine, w/o really getting feedback aside from my sister, GF, dad, and GF's Grandpop. I know there is a thread devoted to this, but I feel like here we share a common value.

So Anyone? Takers?

You all are giving me great hope for next year! And great job HockeyDr!

my lack of interviews is causing me to lose hope...

🙁

Don't worry, I'm hanging in there by just the skin of my teeth with just one interview as well. I think only about 5-6 schools have even gotten back at this point. Let's wait until September at least before we start getting really worried :xf:

Don't get worried until November if possible. Your applications are in, update as new things come along. Just try to relax, its still early. Most schools should start handing out shortly but even those are just going to come in waves. End of September is the earliest I'd start to worry.

Although this is coming from teh same person who was freaking out when I wasn't in the first batch of AZCOM interviews so I should probably take my own advice.

 Yes, we should all try to put off our worrying for a few months, if possible.

Interview invite at LECOM Erie :soexcited:

edit: on 10/29

Woohoo chalk another one up for the underdogs! Just got the call for an invite from LMU-DCOM!

This is with my original 24 on the mcat even though I just re-took it last week haha

New Underdog here. First time through, and hoping one time will do. MCAT in a few weeks... out of school for a lot longer than that. Bio grad on the comeback trail.
I'm gonna be a doctor sooner or later. On the chase.
Holla!
Good luck to all you other Underdog's out there. Get into school and show 'em all what's up. Leave the past where it is and start blazing trails. Time to live that dream.
Congrats to all you interview invites. Be yourself and good things will come.
See ya'll 'round the way.
Peace.

nice job man! I wish LECOM would do that with my 23 even though I retook it on the 13 as well but they put me on hold for my new scores to come in. lmu is my wifes numero uno lol(i would love to go there 2). I just submitted UNE's today and that one was a bitch. Didnt even finish it in time to call and make the payment over the phone. Oh well we will see. Im starting to get worried as well. Although I submitted primaries 8/3 I really shouldnt be but my stats scare me......a lot

Thanks man! Yeah I'm on hold with LECOM as well, along with every other school that has started reviewing apps. LMU so far is the only one to show me any love lol

New underdog!! Could use some support!

Here are my stats 3.6 cGPA 3.4 sGPA-- 21 MCAT. Retook the MCAT July 29 and will get the score back in a few weeks. One hold with LECOM right now hoping for the best for all of you!

I really like this thread, but I'm not sure I qualify for admittance. MCAT 30M (8P, 12V, 10B), Science GPA 4.0. Sounds great until I add the non-science GPA, which is a paltry 2.88. Cummulative GPA sits at 3.3. Not sure how much this matters, but I'm a mid 30s non-URM male. Is there an interview for underdog status? Do I qualify?

Hey fellow underdogs,

So i got a secondary from TOURO-NY today and it says i automatically get an interview.... which is sweet! However, upon reading the TOURO-NY forum, people on there seem to think that ANYONE with a 3.0/24+ stats get a secondary automatically.

Thoughts????

according to the 'underdog formula' you can find on the first page of this thread, the average applicant has a score of 45.25........... and your score is 55. it's very high because the formula does not include non-science GPA. so i guess you're not an underdog, sorry 🙁 haha

Is your wife also applying to med school?

Nope, I wouldn't consider you an underdog at all. Maybe if you slacked a little more over the past few years and skipped some classes or something . But as is, you are not an underdog at all.

4.0 sGPA, 3.3 cGPA, 30 MCAT..that's very good...if you have a lot of science courses, then you would probably even make a good MD applicant, although your sGPA for them may be different because they count math courses in their sGPA.

You can still be a supporter here though.

I guess I'll add myself to the list.

3.01 sGPA 3.18 cGPA. 27Q MCAT (11 PS 6 VR 🙁 10 BS).
Re-taking MCAT on Sept. 3rd

I was originally going to wait until next cycle but what the heck might as well give it a try. Primaries were submitted 2 weeks ago and I started to get secondaries today. Should I wait until I get my 2nd MCAT scores to submit my secondaries or should I go ahead and submit? After browsing the forums it seems there are others in the same position that went ahead and submitted and have received interviews.

Good luck all 👍

I would definitely go ahead and send them. If they do put you on hold for a new MCAT score (which they may not) then at least once they receive that score you would be complete.

Really? There is no one who would care to spend 7 mins of there day to read my personal stement (5mins to read and 2 mins to say, "Hey man it sounds good. Did you really save a set siamese twins by performing the reverse hiemlick?"

If you would take the time to read it and offer feedback I'd appreciate it (and that is not an empty appreciation.)

I don't mind reading over yours, but there's not much you can do now that you've submitted your primary.

Awesome thank you. Sent your way!

I was under the impression that you can update your application anytime prior to the deadline. I guess there isn't much to add or change. I was under the character limit and felt I got the point across while eliciting some emotion in regards to my passion and drive towards medicine. I just wanted independent conformation that it was up to par with what other were writing. I'm not the best writer, but I though I did good in expressing my true self.

No problem, check your PM's

I'll read it if you want an extra set of eyes. By the way, love the avatar and tagline... LOVE deep sea fishing.

Ay-ay matey, send it my way and I'll give ye some feedback.

you can send it to me, and I'll look it over as well, however as mentioned since you've already submitted your primary then it wouldn't really matter, but as you'll use same themes for your secondaries I'll be more than happy to give you some hints on that.

That seems to be the beat on the street. I wouldn't worry about it though. You ever spend significant time in NYC? I don't think GPA and MCAT scores are a good indicator of one's chances of survival here! Haha! If you're tough, I say go for it.

CCOM interview! Omg this is the one I've been waiting for, so happy 🙂 scheduled for 9/21.

CONGRATS!

if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere

sedaniel, please write a book and tell your secret within. I would buy it... Or bottle your mojo and send some my way. I wish my season was like yours!

I wish I knew, maybe by the end of the cycle I will have figured it out lol, I'll letcha know. 😉

So, are you deciding to never take orgo II? Because if you do take it at some point this year, you can go ahead and apply. As long as it's done before matriculation, they will process you. I just finished orgo II a couple weeks ago, and no one has my updated transcript yet. Both LECOMs offered me interviews, though.

I've been thinking about this, but I'm not in school right now so I'd have to find a school around here that accepts non-degree students, and then do all the formal applying and transcript stuff and I think it might be more hassle than it's worth. I have 2 interviews so far, (Just got one from CCOM this morning! 🙂) which are both in mid-september, so I think I may wait to see how those go before applying to more schools that need the 2nd sem orgo. It's a little risk, but it should be ok...:xf::xf:

Alas, I count this as my first rejection:laugh:. I still feel I more closely identify with the folks here than many of the pre-allo crowd, so I'm pulling for the underdogs. I am very proud to be a supporter!

Just got a few secondaries: Nova, both PCOMs, KCOM, Western, CCOM. Hold in their underdogs your turn is soon enough🙂

I am not looking forward to filling out all these essays lol

No love from CCOM 🙁 I like CCOM too.... damn

btw, SEDaniel, you are longer an underdog. You are the strongest link buh bye lol

I would probly focus on taking the mcat(what I did) and then start submitting them as soon as your done. btw I think you have a great chance of acceptance with your current mcat and gpa. good luck!

Is your wife also applying to med school?
no lol she loves the area and we LOVE LIVING IN RURAL AREAS. were not big on city's and although we can deal with sububan areas OK we would much rather live in desolate woodsy area. and LMU fits out bill perfect. as well as a bunch of other schools that I have not recieved secondaries from

Okay, this is a complete 180- drastic change of subject. I went on youtube to watch a video about SN2 reactions (yeah, I know, I'm a geek who needs to make sure I got this down before MCAT) and stumbled upon this whacky video. I'm assuming most of ya'll have a sense of humor, so check this out. It is a nice 3 minute diversion from the stress of the application mumbo-jumbo. Enjoy (beware SUPER CORNY, but funny).

things u should know about sn2 rxns:

-they are 1 step reactions
-the rate is dependent on both the nuceleophile and the electrophile rate=k[nu][e]
-require STRONG nucleophiles
-no carbocation rearrangement occurs but inversion of configuration occurs
-ch3>primary>secondary>tertiary>quaternary
-occur in Aprotic solvents (DMF, DMSO)
